MISSION STATEMENT

Dear parishioners,

Yesterday, September 8th we celebrated the Nativity of Mary. I suppose there is no other event in the life

of a family that is as joyful and hopeful as the birth of a child. Children always help us as adults to stay

focused on those things that are more important in life. As our blessed mother Mary was this hope for

Anna and Joachim, her parents; Jesus, her son, would become this sign of hope for the world.

Next Saturday we remember Mary as Our Lady of Sorrows, the day after the feast of the exaltation of the

cross. This helps us to enter her agony and yet, still full of hope. From her birth to the death of her son,

she and her Son together remain a sign of hope for us.

For our Church today, in our need for hope, Mary and Jesus are that for us.

Blessings,

Fr. Peter

Queridos Parroquianos

Bendiciones,

Padre. Peter

Quote of the Week _________________________________________________________________

However, all stems from the inability to trust above all in God, to put our securities in Him, to let Him give true profundity to our heart’s desires. This enables one to endure even weakness, un-certainty and precariousness. Reference to God makes one strong in weakness, in uncertainty and also in precariousness. Without God’s primacy, one falls easily into idolatry and is happy with meager reassurances. But this is a temptation that we always read about in the Bible. And think this well: it didn’t cost God so much work to liberate the people from Egypt. He did so with signs of power <and> of love. However, God’s great work was to take Egypt out of the people’s heart, namely, to take idolatry out from the people’s heart. And God continues to work again to take it out of our hearts. This is God’s great work: to take out “that Egypt” that we carry inside, which is the fascination of idolatry. When one welcomes the God of Jesus Christ, who though He was rich became poor for us (Cf. 2 8:9), one then discovers that to recognize one’s weakness is not the disgrace of human life, but is the condition to open oneself to Him who is truly strong. Then, God’s salvation enters through the door of <one’s> weakness (Cf. 2 12:10); it’s by dint of his insufficiency that man opens to God’s paternity. Man’s freedom stems from allowing the true God to be his only Lord. And this enables us to accept our fragility and reject the idols of our heart. -Pope Francis, General Audience 8/8/2018

Q: What are some consequences of our belief in the natural law?

A: Ones that we believe that the principles of human morality are accessible to everyone, regardless of belief, through the use of their reason. There are very few moral stances taken by the Church which are based on principles derived from divine revela-tion. As far as ethics goes, revelation in fact often only helps us to clarify and deepen our understanding of the natural moral law, or it calls us to a heroic exercise of it. This means that we can have useful moral discussions with any-one, and that when the Church says something in society should be a certain way, it is not “imposing our religion upon others”; ra-ther, we see it as merely following the dictates of right reason. This is clear from the fact that there are even groups such as Atheists for Life. Any moral principles which come from our religion are usually simply things that are binding for Catholics, such as partici-pation in Sunday Mass. Another consequence of the natural law is that it becomes impos-sible to affirm moral relativism. This is the idea that one person has his/her truth, and I have mine. The natural law says that there is truth, and we are either living in accord with it or not, to ours and humanity’s benefit or peril, respectively.

Quote of the Week _________________________________________________________________

Mary believed in the fulfillment of what had been said to her by the Lord. As Virgin, she believed that she would conceive and bear a son: the "Holy One," who bears the name of "Son of God," the name "Jesus" (= God who saves). As handmaid of the Lord, she remained in perfect fidelity to the person and mission of this Son. As Mother, "believing and obeying...she brought forth on earth the Father's Son. This she did, knowing not man but overshadowed by the Holy Spirit." For these reasons Mary is honored in the Church "with spe-cial reverence. Indeed, from most ancient times the Blessed Virgin Mary has been venerated un-der the title of 'God-bearer.' In all perils and needs, the faithful have fled prayerfully to her pro-tection." This cult is altogether special: it bears in itself and expresses the profound link which exists between the Mother of Christ and the Church. As Virgin and Mother, Mary remains for the Church a "permanent model." It can therefore be said that especially under this aspect, namely as a model,

or rather as a "figure," Mary, present in the mystery of Christ, re-mains constantly present also in the mystery of the Church. For the Church too is "called mother and virgin," and these names have a profound biblical and theological justification. The Church "becomes herself a mother by accepting God's word with fidelity.” -St. John Paul II, Redemptoris Mater, 42-43

Learning and Living the Faith

________________________________________________________________

Q: How do we understand the New Testament law? (continued) A: A lot of misunderstandings can arise from reading parts of St. Paul’s letters outside the wider context of his writings, and the rest of the Bible as well. He often talks about the difference between the Law and Grace, noting that we are not under the Law. This is true, we are not under the 613 commandments of the Old Law. But the moral principles enshrined in such as the 10 Commandments are something that existed before “The Law”. When Paul makes a distinction between the Law and Grace, he is saying that just hav-ing the Law was not enough to redeem people and bring salvation. It brought knowledge of wrongdoing, but was powerless to fix it. But with God’s grace, Paul says, we are able to be truly healed of the brokenness and sinfulness that resides within us. “The New Law is called a law of love because it makes us act out of the love infused by the Holy Spirit, rather than from fear; a law of grace, because it confers the strength of grace to act, by means of faith and the sacraments; a law of freedom, because it sets us free from the ritual and juridical observances of the Old Law, inclines us to act spontaneously by the prompting of charity and, finally, lets us pass from the condition of a servant who "does not know what his master is doing" to that of a friend of Christ - "For all that I have heard from my Father I have made known to you" - or even to the status of son and heir.” (CCC, 1972)
