Dear Friends, This week we begin the Season of Lent, that time of personal “retreat” when we are asked by the Church to look into ourselves, to examine our ways of living our faith, to seek ways of doing penance for our weakness or sin, and preparing ourselves to celebrate the Passion, Death and Resurrection of Jesus once again. We begin by being “marked” with ashes. They are a sign of our sinfulness and of our humanness. But they are also a reminder that we are called beyond our human life into the life of Christ. Through our Baptism, Con-firmation and sharing in the Eucharist, we become full members in the Body of Christ. We are called to lives of prayer, sacrifice and service to those in need around us. We are called to grow daily in our relationship with Jesus, our Savior. And we are invited to be true disciples of Christ as we minister to others. May this Lenten season be for each of us an experience of newness. May we offer some sacrifice that will bring us out of our “old ways” and help us to truly be reconciled to God through our change of heart. May the Lord bless us as we enter this Holy Season! Father Fred

Everyday Stewardship If you witnessed a miracle, wouldn’t you want to tell every-one? If you saw the sun dance in the sky, a crippled man walk, or the Virgin Mary appear in front of you, wouldn’t you just want to shout about it from a rooftop so all could hear? Maybe you would be afraid others would not believe you. You might choose instead to keep it to yourself to avoid criticism and ridicule. At least, if you saw a miracle, you would have a choice: to tell or not to tell. Yet, at every Mass we witness a miracle. We witness bread and wine as it be-comes the true presence of Jesus Christ. It isn’t a saint or Mary appearing before us; it is actually Jesus! When was the last time you told anybody about that miracle? It might not be easy for us to always talk about our faith, but we can show them. When we receive the Eucharist into our bodies, we become one with Christ. We go forth from the Mass as a living testimony of the miracle that occurred at Mass. People will not be able to simply look at us and see the evidence. We need to demonstrate to them the reality of this miracle by our good deeds and profound acts of charity. That is stewardship. That is bearing witness to the truth of our God being truly present to us. It is something we should want to share with everyone. —Tracy Earl Welliver, MTS

Give God the Glory A curious feature of the first half of Mark’s Gospel is the pattern of Jesus working a miracle, then telling the recipient of the miracle to keep still about it. Many theories have been offered: Mark is setting the stage for the great “secret” revealed when Peter will proclaim Jesus the Messiah at Caesarea Philippi; more skeptical commentators offer that Jesus, fully aware of human nature, knew that the way to spread the news was to tell people to keep it secret. The insight into this secret-keeping that serves us well, however, is that Jesus was initiating his public ministry according to the pattern that Paul describes. He was doing it for the glory of God—not for his own benefit, but for that of all. Paul would later write in Philippi-ans that Jesus “humbled” himself to become like us. And we see this humility at work in today’s healing of the leper. Jesus is trying to reveal the presence of God’s reign among the people, not so that he himself might receive the glory, but so that God would be glorified through him. Imitating this pattern, which Paul en-courages the Jewish and Greek Christian factions in Corinth to do, still serves us well today. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are obligatory days of fasting and abstinence. In addition, Fridays dur-ing Lent are obligatory days of ab-stinence. The norms of fasting are obligatory from age 18 until age 59. When fasting, a person is permitted to eat one full meal. Two smaller meals may also be taken, but not to equal a full meal. The norms concern-ing abstinence from meat are binding on Catholics from age 14 onwards.

There will be NO Eucharistic Adora-tion the weekend of February 15-17

Reception to follow

This past week St. Mary School cele-brated Catholic Schools Week. Each day we focused on various aspects of our Catholic school, including com-munity, scholarship, service, grati-tude, and love. The second-graders celebrated their First Reconciliation this week as they continue on their faith journey. They are deepening their love of Christ with an under-standing of forgiveness. The second grade and school community are growing in love and friendship by learning new things and practicing Christ-like behavior.

Treasures from our Tradition Today’s Gospel cen-ters on the plight of a leper and Jesus’ response of healing. In Hawaii, the bacte-rium that causes lep-rosy probably en-tered from China in the mid-1800s, and the native islanders

were susceptible to the dreaded dis-ease. In 1866, the government literally dumped the sufferers on a remote and virtually inaccessible island peninsula with towering cliffs. Thrown off ships into the sea, the sick people were told to swim for the beach and head for caves, and for seven years the only supplies were similarly cast into the sea to drift ashore. It was then, 1873, that a thirty-three-year-old Belgian priest, Damien de Veuster, went voluntarily to Kalaupapa. Before long, he cajoled the government into funding his mission and its hospital, built a village with proper homes and sanitation, and re-cruited Mother Marianne Cope to bring sisters from Syracuse, New York, to nurse the sick. Damien, who eventu-ally died of leprosy, has been canon-ized, and Mother Marianne as well. Although leprosy has been cura-ble since the 1940s, today a few pa-tients remain in their lifelong home, now a national historic site. The penin-sula is still utterly isolated from the outside world, and the speed limit for the few cars there is 5 mph since there’s nowhere to go! The hospital is still well-staffed and equipped, but access is regulated and visitors must take an official tour, often involving a descent down the cliffs by “Molakai mule.” There are few places on earth that evoke the healing power of Jesus, or our call to follow the Healer, more than Damien’s beloved island mission. —Rev. LIVE THE LITURGY - INSPIRATION FOR THE WEEK

We never marginalize or turn our backs on those who suffer violence, oppression from unjust systems, pov-erty, illness, or disease. Jesus never turned anyone away, but always ex-tended a hand of healing and compas-sion. He would insist on extending God’s merciful and unconditional love to all, even if it meant breaking the Sabbath or civil law. Does the way we treat others, especially those who are different than us, reflect the freedom, joy, love, and good news of the Gospel?

Oh ever immaculate Virgin, Mother of Mercy, Health of the Sick, Refuge of Sinners, Com-

forter of the Afflicted, you know my wants, my troubles, my sufferings. Look upon me

with mercy. When you ap-peared in the grotto of Lourdes, you made it a privileged sanc-tuary where you dispense your favors, and where many suf-ferers have obtained the cure

of their infirmities, both spiritu-al and corporal. I come, there-fore, with unbounded confi-dence to implore your mater-nal intercession. My loving Mother, obtain my request.

I will try to imitate your virtues so that I may one day share your company and bless you

in eternity. Amen.
