As it turned out the rain held off, and a wonderful crowd gathered and our choir led us in song. Bishop Walter Hurley spoke of the transitions we’ve had over almost a year since the fire. From our vigil the weekend of the fire, to East Kentwood High School, to our current location we have stood together in prayer and supplication to our Almighty Father. He spoke of the hard work and sacrifice we have all put in as we moved forward to arrive at this day. After blessing the ground the church will be built on, the actual groundbreaking began. Bishop Hurley and Fr. Godfrey were joined by Becky Vetter (Finance Council), Mark O’Gorman (Pastoral Council), Jim Beauchamp (Resurrection Building Committee) and Nancy Baum (Staff). Cheering, clapping and smiles were the order of the day. It is good to know we are going to see progress soon! On Tuesday evening, May 28th, we also gathered for a Prayer Service in our Family Center (thank you Mother Nature). A very prayerful and reflective evening for those who could attend. We were able to write on stones the gifts and thoughts we carry for our parish. These stones will find their way to the foundation when it is poured. Our church will truly be built on living stones—all of us who cherish the faith and life of St. Mary Magdalen Church. For anyone who was not able to attend on Tuesday evening, stones will be provided at the 1800 44th location in the Gathering Area for you to sign your name, list your ministry, or whatever you’d like to say. They can then be laid in the wheelbarrow to join the others. It is a glorious time for us and we ARE “Ice Cream Truck” excited! Nancy Baum

The Health Ministry will be at the south end of the Gathering Area after the Saturday 5:00 p.m. Mass and in between the 9:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. Mass on Sunday, June 9, offering their monthly blood pressure and blood sugar checks. Stop by and become one of their monthly ‘regulars’.

+++ The Men’s Group will meeting Monday, June 3, at 7 p.m. in Room 3. All men of the parish are invited to come and learn what they are about. Please note their meetings will return to Tuesday evenings next month.

+++ Blood Uses Everyone knows blood may be needed to care for trauma victims, surgical patients, and people with bleeding disorders. But blood also is often needed by people undergoing many other types of medical treatment, including chemotherapy and radiation. Advances in medical science mean that more people need more blood for more kinds of medical care. And that means more blood is needed than ever before. Be a hero and sign up for our June 20th BLOOD DRIVE. Their mobile bus will be in our parking lot from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. There is plenty of time to donate and go to Mass.

+++ Millions of dollars in state aid available to help with foreclosures More than $380 million in state funds are available to help qualified homeowners facing home foreclosure through the Step Forward Michigan program. The group is partnering with faith communities around the state to prevent home foreclosure by promoting awareness about the Michigan State Housing Development Authority (MSHDA) program that offers free assistance to eligible at-risk homeowners. The targeted assistance is intended to help those who have been hit hardest by the economic downturn, allowing them to stay in their homes. For details, go to www.stepforwardmichigan.org.

+++ St. Jude Parish Unemployed Support Group Our Mission is to support the unemployed and underemployed of Saint Jude Parish and non-parishioners during these challenging times, with prayer and education, including networking, resume/resume reviews, interviewing techniques, social services/resources, and the unemployment impact on everyday family living. The sessions are open to all who are unemployed, underemployed, or concerned about the future of their job. Please join us in our warm, friendly atmosphere of caring, sharing, and personal growth. There is no fee. All are welcome. Meetings are held from 9:30am-11:00am on the second Wednesday of the month in the Brophy Center. For more information, please contact Dan Makowski at [email protected] or Mary Tomaszewski at [email protected]

SILENT AUCTION FOR PIANO LESSONS

Hello everyone, I have had people approach me requesting piano lessons, but have had to decline because of my schedule. However, as part of my pledge to the St. Mary Magdalen Resurrection Campaign, I will undertake 4 students during the summer only (June 11th to August 27th) on Tuesdays 2-4pm. Due to the fact that many people have expressed interest and there are only 4 spots available, you can obtain your spot through a silent auction. The 4 people who submit the highest bids by June 9th will secure a time slot for Tuesday lessons. Once the lessons begin they are 30 minutes and are $20 each and take place in Room 1 of the Family Center. The only requirements I have for potential students are the ability to speak and understand English, and the students are at least 6 years old. THIS IS NOT FOR PERSONAL FINANCIAL GAIN— ALL PROCEEDS FROM THE SILENT AUCTION AND LESSONS WILL GO TOWARDS THE ST. MARY MAGDALEN RESURRECTION FUND. If you are interested in bidding, please send your bid to [email protected] or call the office 455-9310.

Live Laugh Love, ~Jenna~
