Pastor’s Weekly Message
Mary, God’s Tabernacle; Jesus, God Incarnate
Our Fourth Sunday of Advent is only for few hours this year. We will be celebrating the Vigil of Christmas this Sunday evening and Christmas Day Masses on Monday, December 25th. The gospel reading for 4th Sunday of Advent point us to Mary, the mother of Jesus. Earlier this month, we celebrated two important feasts of Mary, the mother of Jesus – The Solemnity of her Immaculate Conception on December 8 and the feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe on December 12. The doctrine of Mary as a sinless virgin and her motherhood are proclaimed with these feasts. The smell of roses filled our whole church and chapel during the feast of our Lady of Guadalupe, an expression of love for our Blessed Mother. The reason why Mary enjoys such special honor in the church is because she was highly favored by God and she accepted to bear God’s son – Jesus.
In the first reading, King David, after conquering his enemies and experiencing a time of peace in the land, looked around and noticed that the Ark of God dwells in a tent while he lives in a house of cedar. He felt the need to build a befitting house for God’s ark. However, God had other plans for David. Rather than David building a house for God, it is God who will establish a house for David. Jesus, the Emmanuel, God among us, came from the root of David’s stem. The ark of God is still present among us today. In our Catholic traditions, the tabernacle in our churches which holds the Eucharist, the body of Christ, represents a special presence of God among his people. Jesus in the tabernacle is the visible sign of God’s new covenant with us. In today’s gospel, we read about the great message of the Angel to Mary. Mary’s “Yes” was what God needed to establish that new covenant. With that “yes” Mary became the dwelling place for Jesus, the first tabernacle and the Ark of the New Covenant. By this consent, Mary became an active participator in God’s plan of saving the world. She is today a household name not because of the place of her birth – she came from a little town of Nazareth, an obscure village that is not even mentioned in the Old Testament – but because of her readiness to do the will of God. She gave her consent to the plan of God, a consent made possible through God’s grace.
Mary was innocent and pure when God told her of his plan. What Eve destroyed by not cooperating with God, Mary restored by her obedience. She became the tabernacle of the Most High God as the Holy Spirit overshadowed her. We too are invited to clean our hearts to receive Jesus, thereby becoming a dwelling place for God too. St. Paul says: “Do you not realize that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit, who is in you and whom you received from God? You are not your own property, then; you have been bought at a price. So use your body for the glory of God” (1Corinthians 6:19-20). We pray today that Mary the mother of Jesus will pray for us as we continue our pilgrimage journey on earth.
Our Christmas liturgies begins with the 5 pm Vigil Mass on Sunday. This Mass is for our children (of course parents and parishioners are welcome). It is always very exciting to see so many children fill the front of the church as they gaze on the altar listening to and following the dramatization of the gospel. For this evening, we usually read the gospel for the Midnight Mass which tells the story of the birth of Jesus. This story is real. It took place in the midst of the ordinary political and civic events going on at the time when the census was taken by Caesar Augustus. The angels were told of the joyful news of the birth of an infant wrapped in swaddling clothes and “lying in a manger.” The gospel tells of the first Christmas Carol sang by the host of angels as they praised God singing “Glory to God in the highest and on earth peace to those on whom his favor rests” (Luke 2:14). Come to think of it, we sing this song in the Gloria every Sunday when we celebrate the Mass. Every Sunday we sing the first Christmas Carol sang by the angels!!
Christmas is a new beginning, the birth of the savior of the world. At Christmas we celebrate the Incarnation, the beginning of our salvation. Jesus is the Word of God who was with God from the beginning and who was God himself (John 1:1-18). Our savior is born, wrapped in swaddling clothes by His mother Mary, and Joseph his foster father. Christ restores unity to all creation and God saves humanity. He came to restore what our first parents lost in the Garden of Eden at the beginning of creation. It is God pressing the ‘reset button’ of restoring what we lost in the garden. Let us therefore, celebrate this Season with a heart full of gratitude to God for the gift of our salvation. God shared His very self with us, let us also share ourselves with others. See in the Christmas gifts received and shared as a blessing from God and let us rejoice in the joy that He brought to our world! I wish you all a very merry Christmas and a blessed New Year 2018.
Coordinator of Youth Ministry: Our Coordinator of Youth Ministry, Carissa Moses, resigned over a week ago in order for her to take care of her new baby. We are happy for Carissa and Donovan and their baby Elijah. Carissa’s two years of ministry and service to the youth of our parish has been most rewarding. We are grateful to Carissa for her ministry. This means we now have an opening for a Youth Minister that needs to be filled immediately. The Coordinator of Youth Ministry helps with programs for both middle and high school youth with special emphasize on evangelization, outreach and service/mission work. The coordinator will also assist in the catechetical and sacramental preparations for grades 6-12. If you are interested, please submit your resume to Mike Smith at [email protected]. Fr. Felix Osasona ([email protected])

Annual Christmas
Matching Fund
Our parish continues to experience tremendous
growth. Thanks to your commitment and that of other parishioners, we acquired the former
Lakeland Baptist Church on Isaacks Road and have paid for it. We also paid off the loan for the construction of the school as of June 30th, 2017.
We are now debt free!! Our church, school, Family Life Center, St. Paul Religious Education
Center, McGivney Hall and offices provide comfortable spaces to worship and minister to our
spiritual needs but just like your home, these facilities come at a cost. We also have a wonderful
staff that assist us in our faith needs. The maintenance of these facilities and the building of
more programs for our needs are part of our stewardship commitments.
We are once again blessed this year to have a number of parishioners who agreed to match your Christmas donations. Please prayerfully consider a
generous and meaningful Christmas gift to St. Mary Magdalene this year. The value of your gift will be
doubled, and you can continue to enjoy our beautiful facilities with pride even as we continue to
make them better. God bless your generosity.

Breaking Open the Word for Families Fourth Sunday of Advent
By: Ginger Herrington
Reading 1: Second Samuel 7:1-5, 8-12, 14, 16
The Lord sets King David straight: shall you build a house for Me? I shall establish a house for
you. King David, sitting in his palace, wanted to build a beautiful Temple for God. God turns David’s desire on its
head and promises to establish a house, a throne, and a kingdom for David and his family. God is the giver of all good
gifts; He is with us always.
Reading 2: Romans 16:25-27
The mystery kept secret for long ages is now manifested. The Good News that God loves us and came to save us is
the secret kept for so many generations. Don’t keep this secret to yourself! Tell everyone you know how wonderful
God is by your words and by your actions.
Gospel: Luke 1:26-38
He will be great on the throne of David and His kingdom will never end. Jesus is the ultimate fulfillment of the
promise God made to King David in our First Reading. Mary invites Jesus into her womb and into her heart, and she
was greatly blessed. We, too, are blessed when we invite Jesus into our hearts. Say “yes” to God and be
blessed!

MERRY CHRISTMAS EVERYONE
