Saturday July 6 Saint Maria Goretti Virgin Martyr ndash died in 1902 at age twelve born

near Ancona she was stabbed to death preferring to die than to be raped with her mother

present she was canonized in 1950 before the largest crowd ever assembled at that time in

Rome for a canonization patroness of teenage girls

Tuesday July 9 Saint Augustine Zhao Rong Priest and Companions Martyrs ndash The 120

martyrs honored today died between 1648 and 1930 Most of them (87) were born in China

and were children parents catechists or

laborers ranging from nine years of age to seventy-two This group included four Chinese

priests The 33

foreign-born martyrs were mostly priests or women religious especially from the Order of

Preachers (including St Francis Capillas proto-martyr of China) the Paris Foreign Mission

Society the Friars Minor Jesuits Salesians and Franciscan Missionaries of Mary Augustine

Zhao Rong was a Chinese soldier who accompanied the prisoner Bishop John Gabriel Taurin

Dufresse (Paris Foreign Mission Society) to his martyrdom in Beijing Moved by the bishoprsquos

courage Augustine sought baptism and not long after was ordained a diocesan priest He

was martyred in 1815 Beautified in groups at various times these 120 martyrs were canon-

ized October 1 2000 by Pope John Paul II

Thursday July 11 Saint Benedict Abbot ndash died in 547 wrote famous monastic Rule noted

for its wisdom and moderation and need for obedience ldquoLet all follow the Rule as their

guide in everything and let no one rashly depart from itrdquo (Rule Chapter 3) founded twelve

monasteries including Monte Cassino Benedictines today number some 6970 religious con-

sidered the ldquoPatriarch of Western Monasticismrdquo a patron of Europe
