INTRODUCTION St Mary Redcliffe (‘SMR’) is an inclusive church with a growing and diverse congregation. Our vision is to ‘sing the song of faith and justice’, to be a good neighbour to the people in this parish regardless of their age, gender, race and religion. It is a parish church serving a highly diverse area where urban deprivation sits alongside luxury apartments and regional offices of international companies. Purpose The church’s engagement with the community is motivated by faith and the call to love our neighbour; the Community Development Worker will be representing the church but we would not expect them to offer any religious content in their community work and do not require them to adhere to any particular faith.

Our neighbourhood Redcliffe South ranks among the most deprived 4% of neighbourhoods in England, according to the English Indices of Deprivation 2019, and among the 1% most deprived on the Income Deprivation Affecting Children Index (IDACI). There is a mixture of housing in the area around the church, including a lot of Local Authority flats, some housing association housing nearby, historic townhouses and an increasing number of new developments of high-end luxury apartments in the wider area. The population is ethnically, culturally, and religiously diverse. While there is a reasonable level of community space for formal or informal meetings and activities, this is underutilised. There are concerns among some local residents about antisocial behaviour including street drinking, drug-dealing and drug use. However, this is only one perspective on the neighbourhood, and the experience of many is of a community with a huge amount of good will, energy and talent, and genuine concern for neighbours. Current community development work We are seeking an experienced and committed community development worker to join our team at an exciting moment for Redcliffe. Community development work led by the church in Redcliffe over the past three years has led us to a point where we have a strong network of professionals, community activists and connectors involved in a wide range of groups and services in the local area. We are now working to strengthen that network by exploring a more formalised partnership of local residents and professionals. In partnership with Bristol City Council, our community outreach is driven through an Asset-Based Community Development (ABCD) approach, seeking to build on the strengths and experiences already present in the neighbourhood. Our work focuses on facilitating connections and we have recently opened the Redcliffe Community Pop-Up, a drop-in community space in the heart of the neighbourhood that we envisage becoming a hub of community activity. Church development plans St Mary Redcliffe is an iconic church building of European significance, offering thousands of visitors a friendly welcome: our future plans will substantially increase the numbers of visitors, transform the experience on offer and provide level access to the majority of the site. The planned major development of our facilities will have an impact on the local community. The Community Development Worker will champion and involve the local community in the church’s wider work and planning.
