St Mary’s Catholic Parish Warwick Vision Statement
To live the Gospel by celebrating together, sustaining a welcoming parish
and serving Jesus Christ through the joys and sorrows of our wider
community.
What price are we prepared to pay to create a just, equitable and healthy planetary community?
That question is at the heart of today’s gospel reading. What price are we prepared to pay to change the way we live so that black lives matter to everyone without exception and so that we might meet the needs of everyone within the means of the planet? We might learn from the witness of the hundreds of medical professionals who have died from Covid-19 contracted from their patients. Today’s gospel reading brings to a close the so-called missionary discourse in which Jesus instructs his disciples on what it means to be a disciple. In following the way of Jesus and living the gospel of truth and justice and compassion, we can be faced with excruciating choices. We cannot always satisfy family if we want to be true to what we believe or if we want to expose injustice and dishonesty: there is often a deeper commitment that transcends the bonds of family relationship. We may even be called to relinquish, for the sake of a greater good, work that we love or income on which we depend. In other words, there is deep suffering in the way of discipleship, suffering that comes from being true to a mission that brings life to others despite the cost to ourselves. Taking up the cross is a powerful metaphor for being willing to endure whatever hardships are involved in realising the vision of God’s empire as opposed to the brutal empire of “Rome”. God’s empire finds expression in our times in every attempt to enshrine just policies and practices in law. It finds expression in every attempt to free the most marginalised from the impact of unjust policies and practices. Words are not enough: we are to live out in our lives the pattern of Jesus’ life, a life characterised by hospitality or welcome and attention to the vulnerable.

REFLECTION
National Prayer for Drought
Eternal God, in wisdom & love You created our
earth to sustain us & give us life. We turn to You
in faith, hope & love, asking You to look with
favour on our drought-stricken land, on our
starving animals, on our failing crops.
Strengthen, sustain & give new heart to our
farmers & all who are affected by drought; be with
those who support them. In Your loving
providence, send abundant rain & restore our
parched earth. Father of all compassion, hear our
prayer, through Jesus Christ Your Son, in Whom
the promise of new life has dawned, & through
the power of the Holy Spirit, the Lord the giver of
life; Renew the face of the earth. Our Lady of the
Southern Cross, Mary Help of Christians—Pray
for us. St Mary of the Cross MacKillop—Pray for
us. Amen.
To follow Jesus means putting other important relationships second. It means taking up the cross and perhaps facing the same fate that Jesus met—persecution, suffering, death—but remaining faithful leads to eternal life. In ancient times, a per-son’s agent was seen to be the person themselves, and here Je-sus is giving great dignity to the apostolate of following him by saying it derives from the Father himself through Jesus.
In the Scriptures, a prophet is a person who speaks for God. To be a prophet, one must have a very clear understanding of what God wants, and the task is to transmit that message to the peo-ple. There are many instances of the people rejecting the mes-sage of the prophets. Some scholars translate ‘holy man’ as ‘just man’ or someone who does the will of God. To recognise and welcome the truth is to be a disciple. The cost of discipleship may be high, but the rewards are great.
How welcome do you feel in this journey?
Have some people reacted badly to your decision to
approach the Catholic Church?

PRAYER FOR PUBLIC HEALTH EMERGENCY
Almighty and all-merciful God, lover of the human race, healer of all our wounds, in whom there is no shadow of death, save us in this time of crisis; grant wisdom and courage to our leaders; watch over all medical people as they tend the sick and work for a cure; stir in us a sense of solidarity beyond all isolation; if our doors are closed, let our hearts be open. By the power of your love destroy the virus of fear, that hope may never die and the light of Easter, the triumph of life, may shine upon us and the whole world. Through Jesus Christ, the Lord risen from the dead, who lives and reigns for ever and ever. Amen. Holy Mary, health of the sick, pray for us. St Joseph, guardian of us all, pray for us.
The Most Reverend Mark Coleridge
