20th July 2017 Term 3 Week 2

St Mary’s School Warwick Newsletter

Dear Parents/Caregivers

The celebration of Catholic Education Week will commence this Sunday, 23rd

July. This annual even is held to promote the special ethos of Catholic schools

and to highlight the great things that take place in Catholic schools such as St

Mary’s every day.

The theme for this year’s celebration is, “Sharing the Journey”. During Catholic

education Week 2017, Catholic education communities across Queensland are

invited to celebrate how they are sharing the journey. At St Mary’s School, we

will begin the celebrations with our annual Ball Games carnival on Monday

followed by the Catholic Education Liturgy shared with Assumption College. On

Tuesday all of our students will attend a presentation titled, “Sticks and

Stones”. This is a live drama presentation, teaching children assertiveness and

cooperation. On Thursday, some of our Year 5 and 6 students will attend the

annual Catholic Schools Netball and Touch Football carnivals in Toowoomba.

On Friday, all staff will attend professional development in Toowoomba.

FRIDAY IS A PUPIL FREE DAY.

The theme is about sharing a journey. On the night of his resurrection, Jesus

shared a journey with his friends. This is referred to as the Emmaus Journey or

Emmaus Story. This story told of the fear of the disciples and the apostles as

they believed Jesus was no longer with them. Jesus reminded his friends that

He would always be with them. The walk to Emmaus was a reminder to all of

us to “walk in Jesus’s shoes”. How do we make sure we are walking in Jesus’

shoes?

Pretend you are on a journey… walking along, side by side with another

person. This other person might be a neighbour, a friend, a family member,

someone in need, or a complete stranger. Consider these questions:

Who is the person you are walking alongside? What is your relationship to

them? How is your journey the same? How is your journey different? Think of

a challenge they may have had to face. How could you be “Jesus” to them?

Have a lovely week. Margaret

Administration Catholic Education Week

Catholic Education Week will be celebrated next week. On Monday, 24th July, we will once again join with Assumption College in celebrating a Catholic Education Week Liturgy. This Liturgy will be held at 12.30pm in the MacKillop Centre and all parents are encouraged to join us. After the Liturgy, both schools will return to their respective campuses.

On Thursday, 27th July, Netball and Touch Football teams will compete in the annual Catholic Schools Carnivals in Toowoomba. CONGRATULATIONS TO MISS MARY RUTLEDGE AND MRS HELEN GILLAM WHO WILL BE RECOGNISED AT A SPECIAL CELEBRATION ON THURSDAY AFTERNOON, ACKNOWLEDGING THEIR LONG STANDING COMMITMENT TO CATHOLIC EDUCATION. BOTH TEACHERS HAVE GIVEN MANY YEARS TO THEIR VOCATION AS TEACHERS IN CATHOLIC SCHOOLS.

THE BISHOP’S INSERVICE DAY WILL BE HELD ON FRIDAY, 28th JULY. THIS IS A PUPIL FREE DAY.

Parent/Teacher Interviews Parent/Teacher Interviews will be held for all classes in Weeks 4 & 5, Monday, 31st July – Friday, 11th August. With the written reporting process finalised for Semester One, it is hoped that all parents and caregivers will take up the opportunity to meet with their child/children’s teacher/s in Parent/Teacher interviews commencing in week 4.

School Improvement Survey This year our school will be participating in a School Review and Improvement survey managed by Research Australia Development and Innovation Institute (RADII). As well as school staff and students from Years 5 & 6, all parents are invited to participate in the survey. The survey provides valuable feedback for the future directions of our school.

On Monday the 23rd July 2017, RADII will send all parents a personalized invitation to complete the survey online. If both parents’ email addresses are on file at the school, the invitation will be sent to both parents. However, the survey will close once the first person has completed it. If you do not wish to complete the survey, simply delete it.

The survey will take approximately 10-15 minutes to complete. You can complete the survey from anywhere you have access to the internet. The survey will close on Sunday, 12th August 2017 for parents.

We encourage you to be very honest in your responses to the surveys. All responses go directly to RADII so they are confidential and anonymous. When the surveys are completed, and responses aggregated by RADII, overall data is sent to us so that we can then share the findings with you.

Woolworths Earn & Learn

Woolworths Earn & Learn program is happening once again this year. This will run from Wednesday, 26th July until Tuesday, 19th September. When you shop at Woolworths you can collect stickers to place on a sticker card. Once the sticker cards are completed they can be placed in a collection box at either St Mary’s School or Woolies. When the program finishes all sticker cards will be sent to Woolworths for collation and they will let us know the number of points earned by our school to redeem on resources and equipment. In past years St Mary’s School has received excellent resources thanks to the efforts of everyone collecting stickers.

Curriculum Reading During the week teachers from Prep – Year Two continued to work on the Diocesan Reading Strategy. One of the strategies that we will focus on is QAR (Question-Answer Relationship) strategy. What is QAR? The question–answer relationship (QAR) strategy helps students understand the different types of questions. By learning that the answers to some questions are "Right There" (literal) in the text, that some answers require a reader to "Think and Search" (inferential), some questions "Author and You" (interpretive) require you to look back at what the author says and what you know to be true, and that some answers can only be answered "On My Own," (interpretive or evaluative) students recognise that they must first consider the question before developing an answer. Why use question–answer relationship? - It can improve students' reading comprehension. - It teaches students how to ask questions about their reading and where to find the answers to them. - It helps students to think about the text they are reading and beyond it. - It inspires them to think creatively and work cooperatively while challenging them to use higher-level thinking skills.

Catholic Schools Netball and Touch Football Carnivals An exciting part of Catholic Education Week is the Catholic Schools Netball and Touch Carnivals. If your child has been selected, they will have received information and we are very grateful to staff members who have given up their time to train our students. A letter has been sent home regarding training times. Buses will depart from the Upper Campus, at 7:30am sharp and return at approximately 3:45pm. Medical and consent forms, along with $20 are due back at school by Monday, 24th July. Students are required to wear full school sports uniform, including hat. Suitable netball and touch football footwear may be worn. Please ensure your child brings a water bottle and warm clothing (tracksuit pants and jumper/jacket) with them. There will be a canteen available, but it is advisable to send sufficient water and nutritious food with your child for the day. We wish all our teams a great day of sportsmanship and fun with students from other Catholic Schools.
