God of compassion and patient love, be with all who are afraid

The Feast of St. Blasé is celebrated on February 3rd. Saint Blasé was a physician, Bishop of Armenia and martyr. He is reputed to have healed a boy who was choking on a fish bone. For this reason, his intercession is invoked for illness of the throat, and it is customary for throats to be blessed on his memorial, using crossed candles. Since February 3rd falls on Wednesday, throats will be blessed after all masses the weekend of January 30-31.

January 22nd…….In the United States of America, today is a Day of

Penance for Violations to the Dignity of the Human Person and Prayer for the Full Restoration of the Dignity of Life. This is the Anniversary of Roe v. Wade. The American Bishops have decided that this day should be specifically set aside to pray for those who have died through the act of abortion. Everyone is invited to pray the “Prayer for Life” found in the bulletin.

St. Mary’s Alumni Friends Association (SMAFA) is sponsoring their annual Chili Supper and Carnival this coming Friday, January 29th from 5:00-8:00 p.m. Chili, hot dogs, cookies and drinks will be served from 5:00-7:30 p.m. Prices are $5.00 for adults and $3.00 for children ages 12 and under. The evening will also include kid’s games, a silent auction, a large raffle – including the theme baskets filled with items donated by “St. Mary’s students. Dear Community, The bereavement committee meets Monday, January 25 at 6:30 p.m. Brent Muckerheide, Bob Blankman, Andrew Beetz and I will attend the Batesville Deanery meeting this Tuesday from 7:00-8:30. It concerns parish incorporation. Anita will be gone January 27-29 for the DRE Retreat. Anita Poper has served our parish faithfully as the secretary to the DRE. She leaves our parish this Thursday, January 28. Her husband took a job in Chicago and they will be living in the East Chicago area. The monthly parish council meeting will be Thursday, January 28 at 7:00 p.m. I will be at the Catholic Center, January 28 for a meeting on stewardship from 12:00-2:00 p.m. Claude and Dott Bilbrey and I will address the RCIA class this Thursday. We will talk about Marriage and Holy Orders. Don’t forget the Chili Supper Friday, January 29. The 9-10 grade retreat will take place on January 30-31. It ends with the 11:00 Mass Sunday. Don’t forget to bring some extra money with you for the 5

th Sunday Outreach for the poor,

January 30-31. “Today this scripture is fulfilled in your hearing.” Sometimes we hear the word, but just don’t understand. The people in the synagogue did not recognize that Jesus was talking about himself when he declared the he was the fulfillment of the scripture he had just read to them. They didn’t understand. It’s like the story of the talkative wife who was told by the doctor, “Your husband needs quiet and rest. Here are some sleeping pills.” Putting the pills in her purse, she asked, “When should I give them to him?” The doctor explained, “The pills are for you.”

The Fatherless Foundation is bringing a group of Ukrainian orphans

to Indiana for a cultural exchange experience this upcoming Summer

2010. The children will stay with host families throughout the state of

Indiana for 3 weeks. This hosting program was designed to give the

children the experience of a lifetime and a much needed break from the

orphanage setting also to create an awareness of the need for older

children to find families and what these children are really like. The goal

of bringing them here to Indiana is to inspire and instill hope in these

children. Host families play a big role in building awareness of

international adoption by introducing their host child to family, friends,

coworkers, and their church congregation through normal activities while

the child is with the family. If the host family decides to pursue an

adoption in Ukraine, the family may request to adopt the child they

hosted. These children are older children ages 7 -14 years old. All that is

BLESSED ARE THOSE WHO MOURN

The Bereavement Ministry Team of St. Mary’s is preparing to facilitate an 8-week program called “Harvesting Our

Tears”. There has been a change in dates... the program begins Monday February 1st

at 6:30 pm in the

Education Center. This is a Catholic Based program which allows people who are mourning the loss of a loved

one to come together with others in a safe listening environment. Participants share only when and if it

is comfortable. Please call the Parish Office no later than Friday January 29th

if you are interested.

AN ADVENT/CHRISTMAS THANK YOU ! What a beautiful Advent/Christmas season it was, thanks to a multitude of people who helped make it so….So many

volunteers and many of them with us for the very first time. How blessed we are at St. Mary’s, so many wonderful people who are always so willing to give of themselves for the cause of St. Mary’s THANK YOU, THANK YOU, one and all.--------Our Advent began with the hope of finding some peace and quiet in our celebrations as we prayed “Be Still and Know That I Am God.” The lighting of the Advent Wreath was especially beautiful this year. The beautiful white cloth that laid the foundation for the Advent Wreath was a special gift from Diane Gramman, Margaret Tremain Furniture and we thank them and appreciate their generosity. How can I ever thank ALL OF YOU enough for the many ways you were there for the Advent set-up and then the Christmas decorating, those who helped put up and those who helped take down, the person who watered all the flowers, the youth who carried boxes for us and then all of you, our generous parishioners, who helped once again with the Christmas flowers. It seemed somehow we had achieved our Advent Prayer, when we sat, after the decorating was complete, and allowed the beauty of it all to enter our hearts. The peace and quiet was amazing.

THANKS also to the many liturgical ministers, Adult Choir, the Folk Group, cantors, organists, lectors, the Youth Choir, extra-ordinary Eucharistic ministers, Monsignor Knueven, Father Lucas, Deacons Bernabe and Arthur and our servers for working to make our liturgies so beautiful.

Frank Runyeon has won national acclaim for his work as a translator and performer of Biblical texts. He has performed the gospel for hundreds of thousands of people in virtually every state in America. He also is regularly reviewed as “the best speaker we have ever heard” by students and faculty at private and public

schools across the nation.

He is probably still best known, however, for his many roles on television. He starred for seven years as Steve Andropoulos on As the World Turns opposite Meg Ryan, then for four years as Father Michael Donnelly on the Emmy award-winning Santa Barbara. He also appeared for a season as tycoon Simon Romero on General

Hospital opposite Emma Samms. He has guest-starred in recurring roles on L.A. LAW as talk-show host Brooks Tapman, on Another World as party boss Ed McClain, and on Falcon Crest as chess genius Jovan Dmytryk. He

appeared on Melrose Place as Father Tom.

Frank is a graduate of Princeton University with a degree in Religion. After studying acting in New York and Los Angeles for 15 years, he attended Fuller Seminary in preparation for the writing and performance of his first one-man play, AFRAID!: The Gospel of Mark . He continued his studies at Yale Divinity School and

General Theological Seminary, from which he received his Masters, with honors, in l994. He workshopped his first productions in cooperation with the faculty of Holy Cross College in Worcester, Mass.
