WANDERING THOUGHTS IN THE LATE SUMMER
It has been a glorious summer and I have enjoyed my time looking out over the pond and bay from my desk
in the mornings and sitting on the front porch in the evening watching the sun go down sipping on a glass of
wine and tending to Willie’s constant need for a loving hand to scratch his ear. It has sometimes been
difficult to remain focused with so much beauty to watch. I am reminded that all this beauty would happen
whether I am watching or not and has been happening for millions of years and will continue to happen for
maybe millions more. God seems to do God’s best work whether or not anyone notices. I love that about
God.
But summer is coming to its end for this year and we will soon be moving into one of my favorite seasons,
fall. The lush dense green forests which were impenetrable during the summer will begin to turn bright reds
and yellows. The bright yellow leaves seem to me like a bright light making it possible for one to see what
was hidden before.
The flashing school zone signs warn me to slow down and the publicity of the tax free school supplies week-
end reminds me that time is passing and something new is beginning. But I wander.
All this is to say that things will soon be changing on Sunday Mornings at St. Mary’s too. Beginning
Sunday, September 7th for four (4) Sundays through September 28th from 9:30-10:30am I will be introducing
The Book of Common Prayer. Yes, it’s that red book in the pew which automatically opens to pages 323 or
355 on Sunday mornings but gets little use the rest of the week. There will be a time for questions and
hopefully some discussion. Then on Sunday, October 5th our regular 11:00am service will be an Instructed
Eucharist. It will take us a little longer than usual (1 ½ hrs.) but I think it will be worth it (all the mysteries
will be revealed!). On October 5th and 19th, there will be no Adult Education hour at 9:30am. We will
resume on October 19th with a new teaching series. More about that in the October newsletter.
I have already begun to pray for this series of gatherings. One of my prayers is that someone will show up. I
hope you will prayerfully consider coming for all of the sessions.
God’s Peace,
Sandi+

OKTOBERFEST ON TAP OCTOBER 11TH
Join us for the fifth annual Oktoberfest celebration on Saturday October 11th, when Munich meets Fleeton! Bratwursts, brews
and oompah-pahs come back to spice up the local atmosphere.
The festivities at the Mariagarten tent officially start at noon when Bürgermeister Michael DeGroot, Fleeton's honorary
mayor for the day, taps the first beer keg and yells the traditional O'zapft is! (It's tapped!). Rev. Sandi then delivers a special
prayer and welcomes all to enjoy the bounties of the festival.
Festival goers will be tempted by the aromas of traditional German street fare – Bratwurst, Knackwurst and frankfurters.
Platter meals include a choice of meat, homemade sauerkraut and German potato salad from Eckhard’s Restaurant in
Topping.
A popular tradition at Oktoberfest is to have a toast before drinking. This is called "ein Prosit". Traditional German
Oktoberfest beers will be served from their taps. A dark roasted malt bock beer and medium-bodied ale prove to be the
perfect match with soft pretzels and choice mustards.
The sounds of Bavarian music, grill sizzle, corn hole bag thump and voices full of fellowship will float above the trees and
steeple. Children and their parents can spend time together decorating pumpkins and candy apples in the play garden, where
face painting is also offered.
Make sure to stop by the bake sale to stock up on pies, cookies, breads and jellies for the holiday season. Bake sale goods are
donated by our own parishioners and serve as an important part of the fundraising for this event.
“So don your lederhosen and your dirndl, grab your stein and join us at the Mariagarten tent in Fleeton. Herzlich
Willkommen!”
Admission is free. The Oktoberfest runs from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, October 11 th. In case of inclement weather,
activities will be moved indoors.

VESTRY NOMINATIONS
The St. Mary’s Annual Congregational Meeting will be held on November 16, 2014. One of the orders of business for the
meeting will be the election of two new vestry members for 2015, to replace Betty Mountjoy and Rose Rockson, whose
3-year terms expire at the end of 2014.
Vestry nominations will open on October 5th and close on October 19th. Nomination forms and a box for their
collection will be placed in the parish hall during this time.
Look for more information about vestry membership in the October issue of the Fisherman, which will be published on
October 12th.

OKTOBERFEST BAKE SALE
We invite you to contribute to the Oktoberfest bake sale. We welcome baked goods, jams, jellies, butters, cheese balls, chili,
soups, and pickles.
Last year, St. Mary’s made over $600 at the Oktoberfest Bake Sale. Our bake sales have earned more than $2,900 for St.
Mary’s in the previous years, thanks to all of you!
We are blessed to have so many wonderful bakers, bread makers, jam preservers, and picklers. On Saturday, October 11th, let’s
share the love from our kitchens once again.
A sign-up sheet will be in the Parish Hall starting on Sunday, September 7th. Please list your pledge for the item(s) you will
donate. Special requests from last year include pies, cupcakes, pepper jelly and sweet / watermelon pickles.
We welcome pricing suggestions for your goods; otherwise the Bake Sale gals will be happy to price them on that Saturday
morning. Also, you are welcome to bag your own items or the gals will bag them with colorful ribbons.
We ask for your donations to arrive no later than 9:00 am, October 11th in the Parish Hall.
If you have any questions, please contact Kristine Stables.
ECW NEWS
Our fall ECW meeting will be held on Thursday, September 18 at 10:30 AM. Please attend if possible. This is the time that
we look for new officers to take office in January 2015. We need to fill the office of President, Secretary, and Treasurer. ECW
is a very important organization within the Episcopal Church and here at St. Mary's. Please consider serving in this
organization. COME TO THE MEETING!
ECW needs a 2015 chairperson for the Church Periodical Club (CPC) penny collection and a 2015 chairperson for the
Samaritans Purse Christmas Shoebox collection that we participate in with other area churches. Please call Marcia
Adams at 453-9289 if you are willing to serve in one of these capacities.
~ Marcia Adams
We received a thank-you letter from Hospice Support Services of the Northern Neck for our donation to them of $750.
In the letter, Executive Director Jane L. Scates writes “Hospice provides services and supplies that are so important for the care
and support of our patients. It is through your generosity that we will be able this year to meet the needs of the increased
number of patients.” This is one of many donations the ECW gave to local charitable causes in August.

QUIET DAY TO BE OBSERVED
There will be a “Quiet Day” at St. Mary’s on Wednesday, September 24th from 9am to noon. Please come and spend a
couple of hours listening to God through guided meditation with images. This quiet day is open to everyone, so invite a friend
to join you.
MEALS ON WHEELS DATES
St. Mary’s is responsible for delivering Meals on Wheels on the following dates in September: Monday, September 22;
Wednesday, September 24; and Friday, September 26.
PLEASE CONTACT CHRIS NAGLE IF YOU CAN DELIVER MEALS ON WHEELS IN SEPTEMBER.
THE ORIGIN OF HOLY CROSS DAY
September 15
During the reign of Constantine, first Roman Emperor to profess the Christian faith, his mother
Helena went to Israel and there undertook to find the places especially significant to Christians.
(She was helped in this by the fact that in their destructions around 135, the Romans had built
pagan shrines over many of these sites.) Having located, close together, what she believed to be the
sites of the Crucifixion and of the Burial (at locations that modern archaeologists think may be
correct), she then had built over them the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, which was
dedicated on 14 September 335. It has become a day for recognizing the Cross (in a festal
atmosphere that would be inappropriate on Good Friday) as a symbol of triumph, as a sign of
Christ's victory over death, and a reminder of His promise, "And when I am lifted up, I will draw
all men unto me." (John 12:32)
REMEMBERING BETTY BRUNEAULT
Roger is so very happy that Rev. Sandi has considered including a memory / prayer for his beloved wife, Betty, during the
Sept 7 church service. We know this will fill the church with loving thoughts of the blessing of knowing Betty (my Mom).
She so very much loved St. Mary’s church. It was easily one of the deciding factors when they thought to pick up their Rhode
Island roots and replant in the Virginia Northern neck. Knowing they would be so welcomed and friended into such a
compassionate community made the stressful move much easier. Mom is ever smiling with deepest pleasure when seeing us at
what she called her “little church”. She had been longing to participate in many of the ladies’ activities, too. Since we spent
so much time and money at the Thrift Shop, she may as well work there some time! Those who got to meet Betty & Roger as
a couple understood their deep personal connection; and their devotion to family. They gave up all their lifelong attachments
in RI to be near Katie (“Granddaughter”) and support her through these important school years. And Mom & Roger made this
an amazing life-changing experience for themselves by building their dream home; on the perfect waterview lot, just up the
street from our Reedville family. Mom counted the steps up the “lane”; 636, and was determined to make it a fun exercise
routine with the added visiting time as the best incentive. It’s the sight of her beaming smile and the warmth of her quick
laughter that shall light our hearts evermore. And we thank God for the blessing of having such a lovely lady in our lives and
fulfilling her deepest desire to find a place where she could finally say, as she did many times sitting in her beautiful new
living room, “I am at peace.”

SEPTEMBER MOVIE LINEUP
Admission Free; Doors Open at 7:00 PM on Fridays; Movie Starts at 7:30; Popcorn and Soft Drinks at a Nominal Charge.
September 5 — Dead Poets Society - 1998 (PG)
Robin Williams stars as an English teacher who doesn't fit into the conservative prep school where he teaches, but whose
charisma and love of poetry inspires several boys to revive a secret society with a bohemian bent. The script is well meaning but a
little trite, though director Peter Weir (The Truman Show) adds layers of emotional depth in scenes of conflict between the kids and
adults. (A subplot involving one father's terrible pressure on his son--played by Robert Sean Leonard--to drop his interest in theater
reaches heartbreaking proportions.) Williams is given plenty of latitude to work in his brand of improvisational humor, though it is
all well-woven into his character's style of instruction. ~ Tom Keogh
September 12 — Beyond the Sea - 2005 (PG-13)
One of America’s greatest performers, Bobby Darin lived a rags-to-riches life. He worked his way from shady nightclubs to his
dream destination, The Copacabana, where he wowed crowds with "Splish Splash," "Mack the Knife" and other hits. He was a
marvel at singing, songwriting and performing – stealing the hearts of fans everywhere despite the suffering in his own heart.
~ Amazon
September 19 — Belle - 2013 (PG-13)
BELLE is inspired by the true story of Dido Elizabeth Belle (Gugu Mbatha-Raw), the illegitimate mixed race daughter of a Royal
Navy Captain. Raised by her aristocratic great-uncle Lord Mansfield (Tom Wilkinson) and his wife (Emily Watson), Belle's lineage
affords her certain privileges, yet the color of her skin prevents her from fully participating in the traditions of her social standing.
Left to wonder if she will ever find love, Belle falls for an idealistic young vicar's son bent on change who, with her help, shapes
Lord Mansfield's role as Lord Chief Justice to end slavery in England. ~ Fox Searchlight Pictures
September 26 — The Railway Man - 2013 (R)
Academy Award Winners Colin Firth and Nicole Kidman star in the remarkable autobiography of Eric Lomax (Colin Firth), a
British Army officer who is captured by the Japanese during WWII and sent to a POW camp, where he is tormented and forced to
work on the Thai-Burma Railway. Decades later, still suffering the trauma of his wartime experiences, Lomax and his wife Patti
(Nicole Kidman) discover that the Japanese interpreter responsible for much of his treatment is still alive and set out to confront
him, in this powerful and inspiring tale of heroism, humanity and the redeeming power of love. ~ Amazon
