WELCOME TO
ST. MATTHEW PARISH
FR. MARK JENDRYSIK — PASTOR
FR. MICHAL TWARUSEK — PAROCHIAL VICAR
St. Matthew Mission Statement We, the members of the St. Matthew Parish community being many parts but one sacramental body, are sent by the love of God to make Christ present in the world.
Ekklesia vs Kirche As I begin as pastor here at St. Matthew, I look out at the community that is gathered and see what is described in the early chapters of the fifth book of the New Testament. St. Luke tells us how the Holy Spirit begins shaping the Church through the ministry of the Apostles. This work shows us two ways in which these efforts are most fruitful: 1) Introducing people to Christ and 2) Giving example of how they grow into fully devoted followers. As Saint John Paul II, Pope Benedict and Pope Francis have fueled the New Evangelization, it is about bringing the Gospel to those who have not heard it, or need to hear it anew again. Then it is about helping them grow into disciples of Jesus
Christ, through the Word of God and the Eucharist. As I start to learn St. Matthew Catholic Church, I will need to learn the parish, not just the buildings, not just the congregation, I will need to learn the parish—which includes all the people, people who we do not know and people who today are not in our pews. St. Matthew Catholic Church is pretty much equivalent to the zip codes of 60137 and 60139. There are plenty of wonderful things that I am sure are here in the parish, but I have an idea that one of the facts is one that probably will surprise us all. The majority of people in our parish do not go to church—and they are probably Catholic. Why they do not go is as numerous as they are and to bring them back we as a community will have to learn about them and why they do not come to St. Matthew Catholic Church. What are we building? Churches of course we are. That is only part of the answer. For those who have gone to the Holy Land you have probably made a trip to Caesarea Philippi, the place which was known as the sin city of its day and age. It is also the place which is the beginning of the Jordan River. It was here in Matthew 16:13 where Jesus asks his disciples a simple question: “Who do people say the Son of Man is?” And in the next verse comes the answers, “John the Baptist, Elijah, Jeremiah or one of the other prophets” (Mt 16:14). It seems with the answer there is a great deal of confusion of who the Son of Man is. Then Jesus asks a simple second question: “But who do you say that I am?” (Mt 16:15). Peter then answers “You are the Messiah, the Son of the Living God” (Mt 16:16). This was the first time that any of the disciples got this concept correct. So Jesus a little further on says in Mt 16:18, “You are Peter and upon this rock I will build my…. If Jesus were building this structure it would have been a “temple” or a “synagogue”, we instead have a new word, not heard before in the New Testament “I will build my church and the gates of the netherworld shall not prevail against it.” This is the plan of Jesus and for all times this is what God will do and nothing is going to stop it. The word Matthew uses is the Greek word ekklesia. But in English we see the word Church not to be a translation of ekklesia. Church is more closely derived from the German word “Kirche” which is a building. Ekklesia more identifies with something that impacts the community it is in. With the different uses of the word, it shows us there are different ways of looking at Church. So today I ask you these questions for your reflection as we begin our journey together. Are we a Kirche or an ekklesia? Are we ready to go forward for working on a mission or are we insisting on business as usual? Does St. Matthew Catholic Church make a meaningful and measurable difference in our community or are we just simply serving our members? If we are willing to join Christ as we were invited in the gospel passage to be an ekklesia, let us remember the words to the hymn Amazing Graze as we continue to make St. Matthew Catholic Church a place where we see and feel God’s intervention in our lives. Amazing Grace how sweet the sound that saved a wretch like me I once was lost, but now am found was blind, but now I see. Fr. Mark

JOHN THE BAPTIST Since June 24 falls on a Sunday this year, the Church has the opportunity for a more intense celebration of the birth of John the Baptist, who is often described as the last of the Old Testament prophets and the bridge between Judaism and Christianity. More commonly, John is known as the “precursor” of our Lord Jesus Christ. All the Gospels report John’s basic message: Repent, the kingdom is near at hand. One greater than I is coming. Though he was a wandering preacher who dressed in camel skins and ate grasshoppers, John’s legacy is one of true royalty. His origins are similar to those foretold by God through the prophet Isaiah: “You are my servant, he said to me, Israel through whom I show my glory” (Isaiah 49:3). John’s humility—“I am not he”—was surpassed only by that of his Lord Jesus, the humble servant who followed. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.
