St. Matthew Church Limerick

TODAY IS THE SECOND SUNDAY OF LENT. THE READINGS BEGIN ON PAGE 70 OF THE MISSALETTE. Pastor’s Pondering

I suspect that we have all heard of the seven deadly sins. I bet most of us, given enough time, can even name these sins. I wonder, however, if our knowledge of these sins and why they are given such a menac-ing name is as robust as it should be. Most of us know what a sin is, but what makes a sin deadly may just be a mystery to us. So for the next few weeks, seven most likely, I hope to give a brief exposition of what a deadly sin is and what are the best remedy for these sins. Our church maintains that there are seven vices that lead to breaking one or more of the Ten Commandments. These bad habits are called deadly because they kill our relationship with God. These bad habits, these sins, destroy our share in the saving grace that God offers to each of us in abundance. These are serious sins and not something to simply dismiss as the human condition. Left unchanged these sins can lead to permanent separation from God. Pride is the key to all other sins. Pride, the unreasonable love of self leads us to believe that we do not need anyone else. Pride makes us believe that we are more important than others, that we are smarter than others, that we are more gifted than others. Ultimately pride, unchecked can lead us to believe that all that we are, all that we have, all that we can do comes from ourselves. When pride takes over our lives, we may find ourselves so full of ourselves that we have a hard time getting along with anyone else. When we sense that others are not as appreciative of our greatness as they should be, we can become hard to deal with. We may rationalize or make excuses for lying, cheating, or stealing, or insulting others because if others knew how great we are they would understand why we do what we do.

Liking oneself, loving oneself is not sinful. In fact, Jesus’s great commandment calls us to love ourselves. But this love of self must be grounded in reality. Pride allows us to think we are whoever we want to be without any reference to what actually is.

Of course, pride does not always make us jerks. But it does make us think that we are better than most everyone else.

There is a way to overcome pride…humility. The prob-lem with humility is that we cannot brag about having achieved this virtue. Humility has nothing to do with hating ourselves or beating ourselves up. In fact, in our attempt at humility we can also have an untrue opinion of ourselves. Humility is the recognition of our talents and our challenges. Humility is an awareness that while practice makes perfect, God is the giver of all gifts. Humility allows us to know who we are, how we are and love ourselves and others in our imperfection.

As we go through these forty days, perhaps it would be a good idea if we all took some time out to discover ourselves. To see where we are lacking humility and where our pride is out of touch with reality. Getting to know ourselves better during the desert expe-rience of Lent may indeed help us to know God’s love for us more intimately and to share this love more generously.

Next week, Envy!

FREE EASTER EGG DECORATING

The Easter egg is one of the most widely recognized Easter symbols. The Romans used to have a saying: Omne vivum ex ovo, or “All life comes from an egg.” Eggs have long been a symbol of fertility and rebirth. Early Christians in

Mesopotamia (modern day Syria and Iraq) dyed chicken eggs red in remembrance of the blood Jesus shed on the cross. By the Middle Ages, the egg also became a symbol of the sealed tomb of Jesus. On Easter Sunday, Christians would carry eggs that they would tap against the eggs of the Christians they greeted. The cracks that formed in these eggs symbolized Jesus breaking out of the tomb.

The pastoral council would like to invite you and your family to an Easter Egg decorating event after the 10:30 Mass on March 22nd, please sign up in the narthex or call the parish office to confirm your attendance, we want to be sure we have plenty of eggs to go around. Light refreshments will be served. This is a free family event; all supplies will be provided.

Each year around this time there are questions about fasting

and abstinence. These are the rules that the Church mandates

for us during the Season of Lent.

Ash Wednesday & Good Friday – Both February 26, 2020, and

April 10, 2020, are days of fast and abstinence (from meat)

in the universal Church.

Every Friday of Lent – All Fridays of Lent are days of abstinence

(from meat) in the Church in the United States.

The Law of Abstinence (from Meat) – Binds Catholics aged 14

and older.

The Law of Fasting – Binds Catholics aged 18 and over, until the

beginning of their 60th year (through age 59).
