* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * A Word from Fr. Drummond

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * One of our great national myths is that the early European colonists came to America seeking religious freedom. The Pilgrims of the Mayflower are often cited in this respect. While it is true they sought freedom to worship as they pleased, independent of the Church of England, they were not in favour of religious freedom for others tolerating neither Quakers nor Catholics, nor anyone who thought differently from themselves. Until the American Revolution, the Commonwealth of Virginia had the Anglican Church, the Church of England as the established Church, and it was actually a capital offense for a Catholic Priest to celebrate Mass in the Commonwealth. (To be honest I do not know if a Priest was ever hanged for this in Virginia, but in the Mother

country —England— many Priests paid the ultimate price for their Faith). For Americans the bedrock of our religious freedom lies in the First Amendment of the Constitution: “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof: or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.” It is noteworthy that among the number of different freedoms guaranteed by the First Amendment, religion heads the list. The first clause is referred to as “the establishment clause” and the second as “the free exercise clause.” The establishment clause was not intended to completely divorce government from religion per se, but rather to prevent government forcing a specific religion on the country. Religion has had a profound effect on the development of our nation and government. This is reflected in the fact that the Ten Commandments are prominently represented in the US Supreme Court, and also by the fact that among the Medallions of law markers decorating the US House of Representatives are not only Moses and Maimonides but also two popes (Innocent III and Gregory IX), and even St. Louis, King of France. Unfortunately the establishment clause is increasingly interpreted and used as a means to bash religion, banning it from the public square even to the point of curtailing the free exercise clause. This is the result of an increasingly secularized society which wants not simply to be free from religion but rid of it altogether. As we celebrate the founding of our nation this fourth of July, we should ruminate on the state of religious freedom today in our country and on the many threats it faces. Simply taking our freedoms for granted puts us in a position where we could lose them. Reflecting on our own religious liberties we should also remember our brothers and sisters in the Faith throughout the world who face persecution. In Bethlehem, the birthplace of our Saviour, local Christian women who go out in public without their heads covered risk harassment and even violence. In China, Churches are regularly razed by the government and Christians, particularly Christian leaders, are regularly persecuted. The Holy See’s agreement with the Chinese Government on the appointment of bishops sadly resulted in even greater persecution of Chinese Catholics than before. Christians in Pakistan and India face challenges we can barely imagine. The same is true in large parts of Africa. On our books for sale shelf we have a number of copies of “Diaries of Chinese Martyrs,” which details the Church’s persecution in China under Chairman Mao — one of the most evil men of the last century. Under Mao’s successor, Deng Xiaoping, things lightened up, but not much. Mao’s legacy lives on and we need to keep the Catholic Church and indeed all the Christians in China in our prayers in a special way.

Cardinal Sarah Speaks: “Today the great danger is to think that Holy Tradition could be overcome by a change in the Magisterium. It is argued that the Truths con-veyed by the Church need to be taken in con-text, thus taking the opportunity to claim a change in the Magisterium. In face of this dan-ger, the Council [Vatican II] firmly reminds us that Tradition is the Word of God itself and if the Magisterium tries to disengage from it, it cannot survive. The authentic Magisterium can never break with Tradition and the Word of God.” From “Le Soir Approche et déjà le Jour Baisse” to be released in English this September as The Day is Now Far Spent
