The First Sunday of Advent (MARK 13:33-37)
“Be watchful! Be Alert!” Practically every child in the United States can complete the jingle that begins with “You better watch out, you better not pout…”
Somebody is coming to town and he is going to have that dreaded “list”. Signs of his coming are everywhere. There is great anticipation of the night when he
will bring to people around the world the toys, clothing , and other material things they most desire. His very popularity surrounds an event that was one of
the most important things to happen for the salvation of mankind the birth of Jewish Child, Jesus son of Mary and her husband, Joseph, a carpenter from the
small hamlet of Nazareth in Galilee. Over the next four weeks we have an opportunity to read and reflect and pray for a greater insight into the true meaning
of the Nativity of the child, Jesus. Push aside the hype and the hoopla and prepare a true gift for Jesus - a heart that is more like His and a life that imitates
Him in how we treat others. Be watchful and be alert to every opportunity to be like Jesus.
Silver Angels Will be meeting in the fellow-ship hall on December 4th at 12:00pm for Decembers gath-ering. We will have a “Dirty Santa” gift exchange, not to
exceed $15.00. We will be having pizza from Luigi’s.
Please let George know if you are coming.
PRAYER TO ST MICHAEL THE ARCHANGEL

the devil. May God rebuke him we humbly pray; and do thou, O Prince of the
Heavenly Host, by the power of God, cast into hell Satan and all the evil
spirits, who prowl about the world seeking the ruin of souls.
Amen.

1st Sunday of Advent YRB
1st Reading (ISAIAH 63:16-17,64:1.3-8) The prophet recalls God’s past goodness to His people and please with Him to save them from their present sinfulness.
2nd Reading (1COR 1:3-9) Paul says, “As we await the coming of Christ in glory, the Holy Spirit keeps us steadfast in bearing witness to Him.
Gospel (MK 13:33-37) We need to stay awake at our appointed tasks, because we do not know the hour when the Jesus, our Master, will return.
The theme of our reflection in this Advent: Time to be on Guard.
Advent is not only when we recall and relive Israel’s waiting for the Messiah, Je-sus. It is much more than that. Advent is also a time when we recall that Jesus will return at the end of history at a time we least expect. That is why Mark tells us in today’s Gospel the necessity for watchfulness. He says, “But that day or hour no one knows neither the angels nor the son, but only the Father. Beware, keep alert, for you do not know when the time will come. (MK 13:32-33) Therefore be awake for you do not know when the master of the house will come in the evening, or at midnight or at dawn, or else he may find you asleep when He comes suddenly. And what I said to you I say to all keep awake”. (MK 13:35-36) Like the Psalmist 130:5-6, this brings us to the second point about Advent. You and I live in the important interval between Jesus’ first coming and His second coming. Our job is not to sit piously and stare at the sky, recalling Jesus’ first coming and antici-pating His second coming.
Our job is to complete the work He gave us to do. Before returning to His father, Jesus told His followers: “Go then, to all peoples everywhere and make them my disci-ples: baptize them, In the name of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit, and teach them to obey everything I have commanded you. And I will be with you always, to the end of the age”. (MT 28:19-20)
With the beginning of evening prayer I of the First Sunday of Advent the new li-turgical year begins. This Advent Season marks the beginning of the year of Grace, 2018. It begins this year with evening prayer I on Saturday, December 2, 2017 and ends after midafternoon prayer on Christmas eve. Advent is a time to recall the cry of the early Chris-tians: Maranatha, “Come, Lord Jesus” A communal celebration of the Sacrament of Recon-ciliation. This celebration of the Sacrament of Penance is one way of assisting the people of God in preparing for the Solemnity of the Nativity of the Lord.
In this Advent seasons we have the Advent wreath. This is a popular symbol in many churches. It may be placed in the narthex or gathering area, or near the ambo. Each Sunday one of the candles of the wreath is lit signifying the four weeks of the Advent sea-son. The official color for Advent is violet. Rose color is used only on the third Sunday of Advent which is traditionally known as Gaudete Sunday. Gaudete – meaning Rejoice taken from the Latin translation of PHIL 4:4-5.
Advent is a time, when we call to mind, in a special way, that when Jesus returns He will judge us on how well we worked to spread God’s kingdom on earth. For Christ has died, Christ is risen. Christ will come again. Until He does, we must be about the work He gave us to do . The work to feed the hungry, give drink to the thirsty, clothe the naked, welcome the stranger and work for peace. Then, love one another as Jesus loved us. By this everyone will know that we are His disciples if we have love for one another. (JN 13:34-35)
Have a Blessed Advent Season!

Ignatius Loyola, and St. John Paul II will guide the
direction of this retreat. There will be time for pray-
er, reflection, and rest. The Men’s Discernment
