REQUESTS FOR SCHEDULE CHANGES FOR THE 2018-2019 SCHOOL YEAR: During the month of February, students partici-pated in the course selection process and entered their course requests through PlusPortals. These requests, both in written and electronic formats, are considered a commitment on the part of the students to attend the classes they have asked St. Michael the Archangel High School to provide. Stu-dents are expected to remain in their chosen classes for the entire 2018-2019 school year or in the case of one semester classes, until the end of the semes-ter. By signing the St. Michael High School Course Selection Sheet, par-ents/guardians are confirming their approval of the student's course selection and understand that these course selections are final except under the most critical circumstances. If a schedule change must be considered and is deemed unavoidable (i.e. error in the schedule; failure to meet requirements for graduation, TOPS, the Board of Regents, college admissions, etc.; or the student no longer meets the requirements for the course in which he/she enrolled for the 2018-2019 school year), the parent(s)/guardian(s) must pro-vide school counselors with a written request for the schedule change. The letter must include the following information: the title of the course which is proposed to be dropped from the student's schedule, the title of the course to be added to the student's schedule, the rationale/reason for the request, the parent's/guardian's signature and date, as well as the student's signature and date. Schedule requests are to be submitted during the period of April 30 -May 18, 2018. After this date, a check for $25.00 made payable to St. Michael High School must be included with the written request for a sched-ule change. Only requests following this protocol will be considered. All written requests are to be submitted to the school counselor assigned to the student's grade level for the 2018-2019 school year. The names and as-signed grade levels of school counselors are as follows:

Freshman Class Counselor: Ms. Lindsay Carlino

Sophomore Class Counselor: Mrs. Caitlin Narretta

Junior Class Counselor: Mrs. Katie Zylicz

Senior Class Counselor and College Advisor: Mrs. Stephanie Boudreaux

REQUIRED DATA FORM FOR GRADUATING SENIORS: All Required Data Forms for Graduating Seniors: Class of 2018, which were included in the graduation packet, were to be completed and returned to Mrs. Berthelot by March 21, 2018. If your student has not turned in his/her completed Required Data Form with copies of the college ac-ceptance and scholarship letters attached, please do so immediately! Be certain that both you (the parent/guardian) and your senior sign page 2 of this form. If your student receives letters of acceptance or scholarship offers after submission of the Required Data Form, please forward copies of this information as soon as possible. The only way we may publish this infor-mation is if parents or students share this information with us. RE-REGISTRATION: The deadline for re-registration has passed. If you have not re-registered your student for the 2018-2019 school year, please contact the office immediately. In order to secure a place for your student at St. Michael High School, this process must be completed.

A Message from the Principal

Congratulations to St. Michael’s own Dr. Anna Bourgeois who will be honored by the National Catholic Educational Association on Tuesday, April 3 rd in Cincinnati as a LEAD, LEARN, PROCLAIM Award recipient. This national recognition honors all of Dr. B’s efforts to incorporate the beauty and truth of our Catholic faith into the science lessons that she teaches. Dr. B has enriched all of her students’ lives by sharing her love of animals, her love of science, and her love of learning. We are blessed to have Dr. B as a member of our St. Michael faculty.

As a school community, we continue to be vigilant and plan for school safety. The school safety committee is working on making our campus safer by further restricting access with physical barriers around some of our building entrances. We do restrict access during the school day by locking many of our gates used by students to go to and from the parking lots. We have monthly safety drills where all faculty, staff, and students practice for emergency situa-tions that might arise, including fire, bad weather, lockdown, and evacuation. In April, the faculty and staff will attend a presentation by the EBR Coroner, Dr. Beau Clark, on school safety.

SMHS is looking for parents, alumni, and individuals from the community interested in serving on the school Advisory Board or on a standing committee of the Board. The mission of the Advisory Board is to advise and support the administration of St. Michael High School as it seeks to carry out its mission of forming young people as committed disciples of Christ. If you or anyone you know is interested in serving on our board or on a committee, please fill out the attached form at the end of this newsletter and return it to Mrs. Lila Graham. You may also request an electronic copy from Mrs. Graham by phone 225-753-9782 ext. 17 or by email [email protected] .

The school year is beginning to wind down, but this is not a time for students to slow down or quit. Please encourage them to keep working towards their best right through final exams. We rely upon you, as parents, to be vigilant concerning your student’s successes and struggles in the classroom. Please check PlusPortals often and communicate with your child’s teacher should you have any questions or concerns.

As we enter this most holy season of Easter, our school community rejoices in the Easter blessings of the resurrection of Christ. We pray for peace in our hearts and peace in our world. May this Easter season bring you a renewed sense of joy and hope!

Yours in Christ,

Ellen B. Lee, Principal

Warrior Fund for Excellence

To date we have received just over 160 contributions totaling just over $31,000. This an-

nual campaign is separate from the capital campaign and seeks to raise funds to grow

and develop the St. Michael foundation, and address other needs. Our goal is 100% par-

ticipation among all giving groups: parents, grandparents, alumni, and friends. All gifts are

appreciated.

Why Should I Give?

Tuition payments and related fees provide approximately 81% of the schools operating

budget. The Warrior Fund for Excellence provides a significant source of revenue that

helps bridge the gap between tuition income and the full cost of a St. Michael education,

including funding needed for need based and merit scholarships. The experience of

learning at St. Michael High School is an intense and rewarding one. While St. Michael

carefully stewards its resources, the cost of this experience cannot be sustained by tuition

alone. In the absence of a substantial endowment, your support for the Warrior Fund for

Excellence – Annual Fund plays a critical role in meeting the annual financial needs of the

school and its programs.

Make Your Gift Today!!

Visit http://www.smhsbr.org/giving/ to make your donation to the Warrior Fund for Excel-

lence. Our goal is 100% participation among all giving groups. All gifts are important no

matter the size.

Dear Parents,

The St. Michael High School Advisory Board Nominations Committee is now accepting information concerning prospective candi-dates who qualify to fill vacancies that may occur on the Board at the end of this school year. The Board’s role is that of advisory to the school principal and the Diocesan superintendent in specific school matters. Meetings are usually held on the third Monday of the month beginning in August and ending in May, with the full Board and Board Committees alternating meetings bi-monthly. Special gatherings are called when necessary.

To be eligible to serve on the Advisory Board, a candidate must meet the following criteria:

Genuine commitment to Catholic school education;

Expertise in an area that contributes to the boards’ work;

Ability to make substantial time commitments to the work of the board;

Understanding of the purpose and structure of the school;

Attendance at the Annual Advisory Board Member Orientation provided by the Catholic Schools Office and the

Diocesan School Board;

Values and lifestyle consistent with Catholic doctrine and moral standards;

Employees and close relatives of employees of the school are not eligible to serve;

No more than one immediate family may serve on the advisory board;

Represent the entire constituency objectively.

The Nominations Committee and the school principal will review all applications and will present a slate of potential candidates to the Bishop.

Please consider being a candidate for a Board position or a Board committee or nominating another for Advisory Board service by completing the enclosed form and returning it to the school by April 23, 2018. Please mark the envelope to the attention of the Nominations Committee.

Thanks and God bless,

Jesse Zeringue
