Bishop Bev ~ Go and tell the news this Easter
H ow we react to events is important. Today when something happens the reaction is almost instant. Messages flash around
the world. Comments and opinions are formed and promoted extremely quickly, Debates are held and the meaning of what has happened is digested. In fact many times it feels the reaction is more important than the event.
The reaction to the news that Jesus was no longer in the tomb can be instructional for us all. As ever with the scriptures there are varied accounts, But there are some clear reactions. One reaction, the understandable reaction of fear, led the first witnesses to want to avoid telling anyone what they saw “as they were afraid”. Other reactions show the early witnesses running to tell the others what had happened. You see Mary offering worship to the gardener Jesus, you see the reaction of Thomas who understandably wishes to see more evidence before he can reach a conclusion on the death and resurrection of Jesus. We get the sense of a growing understanding that there has been a world changing event and that others need to know about it. Throughout the narrative God seems to speaking to the witnesses saying go and tell. In Mark’s telling of the story a young man was explicitly giving that very message. message. At the beginning of Lent we were encouraged to go, tell. To Tell the communities we are called to in our diocese how Jesus has changed our lives. To Serve them with Christ’s love in whatever way we can. To Give them our time to show them a glimpse of God’s love. That’s one half of our Rule of Life. The first half is to do with our discipleship journey whereby we are called to Pray, Read, Learn, giving us the spiritual confidence to be able to tell our stories and make Christ known. Our mission to Tell, Serve, Give saw many events in every corner of our diocese enabling us to talk to thousands about our faith. But it doesn’t stop there. This Easter we are given the climax of the greatest story ever told. The story that changed our lives as it has changed the shape of the world. Now can we use this story, and our own story to keep going to tell people about how Jesus loves us, them and the whole world. That’s our challenge. Who will you go and tell the Easter story to? With my prayers and blessings to you all this Easter Time.
Bishop Beverley Bishop of Warrington

Easter at St Michael’s
Easter is such a special time in the Christian calendar. At St. Michael’s we prepare and celebrate Easter in the following: Maundy Thursday 18th April: We mark the night of the Last Supper with a Fellowship meal at 5:30pm followed by a Communion Service at 7.30pm Good Friday 19th April: This is a busy day. 10am Children’s Easter Experience in the church. A chance for our younger members to reflect on the events of Palm Sunday, Good Fri-day, and Easter Day. 11.15am We meet on the market with our fellow Christians from the churches in Garston for a brief service and we give out palm crosses to all on the market. 11.45am Back in the church where we have a simple lunch of soup and a roll where we ask for donations for Christian Aid. 1pm We have an hour of reflection on the events of that first Good Friday. Easter Day 21st April: The Sunrise service on the Holts Field, Mossley begins at 5.30am with the sun rising at 5.45am. Both our 9am & 11am services are communion. Please bring a flower to place in our Easter Cross.
We hope you are able to join in as much as you can this Easter.

Easter Cross & Egg Roll You will have noticed our Lenten Cross in church. It is made from our Christmas Tree. The cross is a reminder of the final hours of Jesus on that first Good Friday. It is a symbol of suffering and death.
But on Easter Day (21st April) it will be transformed into a symbol of life. What we are asking you to do on Easter Day is to bring a flower with you to the services. Just one flower each. Cut the stem down to about 2 inches. Then during the service you will be invited to place your flower on the cross (which will have an oasis attached to it). When we have all done this the cross will look beautiful with all its colour and life. It is such a wonderful Easter symbol and I know you will really love it when it is complete. A big thank you goes to Larry Fletcher for preparing the cross. Also, on Easter Sunday, after the 11am service we will have our annual ‘Egg Roll’ we invite children to bring their decorated, hard-boiled eggs and see who can roll it the farthest.
The Orchard Foodbank based at The Branch has a collection
box at the back of church.
Thank you for your contributions to date.

Hair Today Gone Tomorrow On March 23rd, nine year old Natasha Farrell, one of St Michael’s younger members, had 15 inches cut off her hair to raise money for The Little Princess Trust providing real hair wigs to children and young people, who have lost their own hair through cancer treatment or other illnesses. So far she has raised over £600 through sponsorship. It costs £550 to make one wig, so Natasha has made a huge difference to someone's life. We are all very proud of her and we think she looks fab with her new shorter hairstyle.. Well done Natasha!

Hang it on the Cross
If you have a secret sorrow, A burden or a loss,
An aching need for healing…. Hang it on the Cross
If worry steals your sleep\and makes you turn and toss,
If your heart is feeling heavy…. Hang it on the Cross
Every obstacle to Faith
Or doubt you come across, Every prayer unanswered….
Hang it on the Cross
For Christ has borne our brokenness And dearly paid the cost
To turn our trials to triumph… Hanging on the Cross.

Holy week is the holiest week of the Christian calendar. It begins at the end of Lent with Palm Sunday and leads us into Easter. It includes Maundy Thursday, Good Fri-day and Holy Saturday.
On Palm Sunday Jesus rode on a donkey in triumph into Jerusalem, the crowds cheered and welcomed him. They waved palm branches and called out "Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord "Hosanna in the high-est". Maundy Thursday is remembered as the day of the Last Supper (The feast of the Passover) when Jesus washed the feet of his disciples and established the ceremony of communion (The Eucharist) to eat bread and drink wine in re-membrance of Him "The body and blood of Christ."
The word Maundy comes from the command (mandate) given by the Lord that they should "love one another" Later that evening he was betrayed by Judas in the Garden of Gethsemane. Good Friday commemorates the trial, the passion and the death of Jesus by crucifixion on the cross. It is a sad day of mourning and thinking about the suffering of Jesus. “Father into your hands I commend my spirit” Luke 23:46 Holy Saturday marks the end of Holy Week. Jesus is laying in the tomb guard-ed by Roman soldiers they wanted to ensure that no one attempted to steal the body and say that Jesus had risen as he had predicted. It is a time for the faithful to wait and watch, hopeful and confident Christ will return. Easter is the celebration of Christ’s resurrection and is celebrated on Easter Sunday - it marks the end of Holy Week. Mary Magdalene discovers the tomb is empty and is told by an angel that Christ has risen and she runs to tell the disciples. On a number of occasions over the following days, Jesus appeared to his followers. He prepared them for their ministry and filled them with the Holy Spirit.

2019 Lent Course
St. Michael’s continues with it’s Lent Course. The course is based on the film musical – The Greatest Showman, called, ‘From Now On.’
Over the past weeks we have been exploring and will continue to ex-plore the themes of Redemption & Hope. The details are as follows: The meetings are being held at the Branch and our final meet-ing dates are as follows:
3rd April 7.30pm: ‘Never Enough’ The temptations of false fulfilment that can lead us to be-trayal.
10th April 7.30pm: ‘The Greatest Show’ How redemption is found when we discover ‘the Circus is our home’.
Giving via Direct Debit is the most efficient way of giving to the mission of the
church. Also, if you are a tax payer, the scheme automatically adds the Gift Aid!
Please give some serious thought to using the scheme for your regular giving to St.
Michael's. Speak with Janet Creswell, our Gift Aid Secretary, for more details.

This month, 4 members of St Michael’s ~ Roland, Larry, Lesley & Janet Creswell ~ will be walking the ‘Way of St James’ or the ‘Camino de Santiago’. Roland and Larry will be starting on the 25 th April at St. Jean Pied-de-Port in the French Pyrenes and walking the 500 miles to Santiago. Lesley and Janet will join them in May, in the Spanish town of Sarria for the last 100 miles or so. Do hold them in prayer as they make this journey.
