As you read this, I am somewhere on the Kangaroo Island Wilderness Trail, hiking as part of the Year 7 Outdoor Education Camp. I was fortunate to do the full trail last year while on Long Service Leave
and highly recommend it as an experience that provides just the right level of challenge, amongst the natural beauty of the Kangaroo Island wilderness. When I consider the nature of God, it is very hard for me to look past the beauty that I see in the world, as evidence of who he is. In Romans 1:20 we read ‘For since the creation of the world, God’s invisible qualities – his eternal power and divine nature have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that people are without excuse.’
When I consider the many awesome things in the natural world, and see how they work together flawlessly, I see God’s wisdom. When I witness a sunrise or sunset, I see God’s love of beauty. When I see the unusual, I see God’s humour. Every day we are confronted with evidence of a God who not only has the ability to create wonderous things, but the generosity to share it with us.
Life can be very hard sometimes with troubles, illness and pain. I pray that, as we navigate the tough stuff of life, we lift our eyes to see the world we are in and know that to God, we are more precious and more beautiful than the most spectacular sunset or the most picturesque landscape. We are deeply loved and I thank God for that. Terri Taylor Principal

PYP Approaches to Learning – Communication Skills They PYP promotes the development of five Approaches to
Learning which are a selected group of skills that support
learning and achievement which occurs both within a
classroom setting and outside of a formal learning
environment. Approaches to learning “are deliberate
strategies, skills and attitudes that permeate the IB teaching
and learning environment.”
Thinking Skills Social Skills Communication Skills
Self- Management Skills Research Skills
Each of these skills are broken down into components that develop the
boarder approach to learning.
Communication Skills include; listening, speaking, reading, writing, viewing,
presenting and non-verbal communication. Each of these are specifically are
taught and assessed through the English component of the Australian
Curriculum; but as with all learning at St Michael’s this is transdisciplinary in
nature and taught across all areas of the curriculum.
As part of our reporting to families, the Approaches to Learning are an
important part of our school reports. Across all Learning Communities, the
skills within the Approaches to Learning are sequenced developmentally and
increase in complexity to help indicate growth over a year and throughout
your child’s learning experience here at St Michael’s.

St Michael’s Old Scholars Time Line Dear Old Scholars We are celebrating 180 years of schooling at St Michael’s Lutheran Primary School at Hahndorf. In preparation for our celebrations we are constructing a time line of memories and events in the school gym. We are asking old scholars to jot down a few memories of their time at school. These will be then collated and put on display for others in the community to see. You can collect your responses sheets from the front office of the school and returned to office by Friday 1 November 2019. Feel free to spread the news as we would love to get as many responses as we can. Middle Learning Community Students
Woollies Earn & Learn Goodies Thank you to all the families who helped collect stickers during the Woollies Earn & Learn promotion. Your support meant that we could order a replacement Bee-Bot & some additional Blue-Bots along with other amazing bits and bobs for the maker space.
Uniform All families are reminded that students should now be wearing summer uniform. However, should we still experience cold spring weather in the coming weeks, students may wear the uniform elements needed to ensure they are comfortable. Term 4 includes the compulsory wearing of hats when outdoors. Students without hats will need to stay in the undercover area of the courtyard and will not be able to go out into the playground or oval. Families are also reminded to refer to the Uniform Policy in regard to the wearing of jewellery and hair requirements. These apply to both boys and girls.

Classes for 2020 We will shortly be starting the process of class allocations for 2020. This is a complex process which involves gaining information from students, families and staff. In the consideration of class allocation, we seek to create classes with a balance of gender, ability, age, needs and social network. With our multi-age structure, we also seek to keep students with the same teacher for 2 years, if this is possible and where it is working well. Sometimes the complexity of creating optimum classes means that remaining with the same teacher for 2 years is not possible and should your child be in this situation, it will be discussed with you. If parents have any information which we are not aware of, that may help us to place your child for 2020, we ask that you put this in writing to the Principal before Friday 1st November. Requests from parents for particular teachers or friends will not be considered, as this significantly complicates the process of creating optimum classes for our students.

Working Bee Thank You! We were overwhelmed by the number of people who gave some of their Sunday to finishing many of the big jobs in the outdoor learning space. Everyone pitched in to finish the deck, plant, spread soft fall, move rocks and logs and generally tidy up the space. A huge thanks to everyone involved. We have a few garden tools left over after Sunday – and a couple of people who are unable to find their tools. If you didn’t collect yours, or if you took someone else’s rake or shovel home after the Working Bee, please see Tracy Downing who will direct you to the ‘left overs’.
