22nd SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

HUMILITY

Have you ever been in a group of people--maybe on a tour, at a social gathering, or at church--and discovered that you have just been talking with a well-known author, corporate CEO, great scholar, or politician? Your first thought is the hope that you didn't say anything to embarrass yourself; but your second thought is how much they seemed like such "regular" folks. What is it that makes people seem so "regular"? Today's readings give us a clue when they stress the importance of humility. It is so hard for us not to tell the first person who will listen how busy we are, how hard we work, how much money we donate, and how important our job titles are. We think these accolades make a difference to people, and if we don't tell them, how will they ever know? But if our actions demonstrate our values, people will recognize our worth on their own. The words of Jesus show us how much better it is to let someone else recognize our worth than to be embarrassed because someone did not. Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co.

We are told by all spiritual writers that one important point to bear in mind, as we seek to attain humility, is not to be surprised by our own faults and failures.

--François Fenélon, archbishop of Cambrai

ATTENTION PARENTS AND EDUCATORS! Homeschooling is increasingly recognized, both nationally and worldwide, as a successful method of education. For Catholic parents, it is not just an affordable and academically rewarding alternative to standard schooling, but it is also an excellent way to grow in the Faith and pass it on to our precious children, the next generation.

If you are interested and/or desire more information do not hesitate to contact Anna Maresca at 201-362-6812 who is organizing a group of participants from our area.

Pastoral Care

What is Stewardship? Stewardship is the response of a grateful heart for all the gifts bestowed on us by God. Stewardship is the willing return of the first measure of our time, tal-ent, and treasure to God for all that He has done for Us. Our greatest gift from God is Jesus Christ. Follow-ing Jesus is the work of a lifetime. Stewardship brings us closer to the joy of living a life filled with Christ. The treasure that you return to God is a deci-sion that you make based on your relationship with Him. An ongoing evaluation of your time, talent, and treasure combined with fruitful prayerful relationship with Jesus Christ will bring all of us to the Stewardship way of life.

St. Monica was married by arrangement to a pagan official in North Africa, who was much older than she, and although generous, was also violent tempered. His mother lived with them and was equally difficult, which proved a constant challenge to St. Monica. She had three children; Augustine, Navigius, and Perpetua. Through her patience and prayers, she was able to convert her husband and his mother to the Catholic faith in 370. He died a year later. Perpetua and Navigius entered the religious life. St. Augustine was much more difficult, as she had to pray for him for 17 years, begging the prayers of priests who, for a while, tried to avoid her because of her persistence at this seemingly hopeless endeavor. One priest did console her by saying, "it is not possible that the son of so many tears should perish." This thought, coupled with a vision that she had received strengthened her. St. Augustine was baptized by St. Ambrose in 387. St. Monica died later that same year, on the way back to Africa from Rome in the Italian town of Ostia. St. Monica’s feast day is August 27. St. Augustine, son of St. Monica was born in Africa and spent many years of his life in wicked living and in false beliefs. Though he was one of the most intelligent men who ever lived and though he had been brought up a Christian, his sins of impurity and his pride darkened his mind so much, that he could not see or understand the Di-vine Truth anymore. Through the prayers of his holy mother and the marvelous preaching of St. Ambrose, Augustine finally became convinced that Christianity was the one true

religion. Yet he did not become a Christian then, because he thought he could never live a pure life. One day, however, he heard about two men who had suddenly been converted on reading the life of St. Antony, and he felt terri-ble ashamed of himself. "What are we doing?" he cried to his friend Alipius. "Unlearned peo-ple are taking Heaven by force, while we, with all our knowledge, are so cowardly that we keep rolling around in the mud of our sins!" Full of bitter sorrow, Augustine flung himself out into the garden and cried out to God, "How long more, O Lord? Why does not this hour put an end to my sins?" Just then he heard a child singing, "Take up and read!" Thinking that God intended him to hear those words, he picked up the book of the Letters of St. Paul, and read the first passage his gaze fell on. It was just what Augustine needed, for in it, St. Paul says to put away all impurity and to live in imitation of Jesus. That did it! From then on, Augustine began a new life. He was baptized, became a priest, a bishop, a famous Catholic writer, founder of religious priests, and one of the greatest saints that ever lived. He became very devout and charitable, too. On the wall of his room he had the fol-lowing sentence written in large letters: "Here we do not speak evil of anyone." St. Augustine overcame strong heresies, practiced great pov-erty and supported the poor, preached very often and prayed with great fervor right up un-til his death. "Too late have I loved You!" he once cried to God, but with his holy life he cer-tainly made up for the sins he committed be-fore his conversion. His feast day is August 28.
