17th SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

FEEDING THE WORLD With today's two accounts of feeding miracles and the psalm response about the Lord's hand feeding us, it is easy to gloss over the marvelous hymn in Ephesians. It is built around the most potent biblical numbers: one, three, and seven. The core of it is the word "one" expressed seven times. Three of these describe the church: one body, one Spirit, one hope; the next three are the foundations of the church: one Lord [Jesus], one faith, one baptism. All of these are bound up together in the one Father of all. While we might feel daunted by the prospect of duplicating the wonders worked by Elisha and Jesus in the feeding of multitudes, Ephesians gives us a more realistic way to live and "feed" others as the church: by living in humility and gentleness, by acting with patience, bearing with each other in love, and always seeking and striving to preserve unity through peace. Who among us cannot increase the way we "feed" the church and the world by living this way? We are always called upon to "feed" the world in the literal sense; but our mission as church tells us that others are also fed by the way we live and act each moment of each day. Copyright (c) J. S. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION

Sooner of later, as they plan their wedding liturgy, a couple will receive some advice about a "unity candle." They need one, they are told (at great expense); it is a tradition; it is what Catholics have always done. Not so. In the last thirty years or so, the custom has enjoyed wide popularity in the United States. It has never been officially part of our liturgy, and it exists in tension with some of our core symbols. Usually there are two smaller candles and one larger one to be lit from the smaller. Large candles in our tradition always mean Christ, and smaller ones are always tokens of our baptismal candle. If the candles are meant for a kind of renewal of baptismal vows, then the meaning is clearer, yet this is seldom the understanding. Why, then, are those smaller candles extinguished? It's hard to tell where these pesky candles came from. Some suggest that the Presbyterian Church, which has a very lean wedding liturgy, introduced them as an option for extending a short service. Generally, it's been experienced as a "photo opportunity" rather than a genuine liturgical ritual. The "unity candle," a recent invention rather than an authentic tradition, has not been approved as an adaptation to our rite, and it is to be hoped that it will gradually disappear from view. --Rev. James Field, Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co.

Vocationist Corner With you, for you, in you, O Jesus, I embrace this cross of fire that is the work of divine vocations, with all the struggles against the difficulty of detachment from the world and from families, with all the bitterness of misunderstand and lack of correspondence by those who should correspond to it. I embrace all the agonies of infidelity and betrayal of candidates endowed with divine vocations (XX, 365). In a general sense, everything in the world is divine vocation: vocation to life, vocation to faith and vocation to holiness. Every being and every status worthy of a human being corresponds to a divine vocation (IX, 81). “IF GOD CALLS YOU CALL US”

The VOCATIONIST FATHERS are a Catholic Religious Congregation that strives to foster vocations to the priesthood and religious life, especially among the poor. Their main ministry is to identify and guide those who believe they are called to serve God as Priests. Please call 973-966-6262 for further information.

According to Christian tradition, Saint Anne (also Ann or Anna) of David's house and line, was the mother of the Virgin Mary. Mary's mother is not named in the canonical Gospels. According to the apocryphal Gospel of James, Anne and her husband Joaquim, after years of childlessness, were visited by an angel who told them that they would conceive a child. Anne promised to dedicate the child to God's service. The story bears a superficial similarity to that of the birth of Samuel whose mother Hannah had also been childless. Although Anne's cult receives little attention in the Western church prior to the late 12th century, dedications to Anne in the Eastern church occur as early as the 6th century. In the Eastern Orthodox tradition, Anne is ascribed the title Forbear of God, and both the Birth of Mary and the Dedication of Mary to the Temple are celebrated as two of the Twelve Great Feasts. Varying theologians have believed either that Joachim was Anne's only husband, or that she was married thrice. Ancient belief, attested to by a sermon of St John Damascene, was that Anne married once. Similarly, in the 4th century, and then much later in the 15th century, a belief arose that Mary was born of Anne by virgin birth. Those believers included the 16th century mystic Valentine Weigel who claimed Anne conceived Mary by the power of the Holy Spirit. This belief was also condemned as an error by the Catholic Church in 1677. Instead, the Church teaches that Mary was conceived in the normal fashion, but that she was miraculously preserved from original sin in order to make her fit to bear Christ. The conception of Mary

free from original sin is termed the Immaculate Conception -- which is frequently confused with the Virgin Birth or Incarnation of Christ. The iconographic subject of Joachim and Anne “The Meeting at the Golden Gate” fitted both views, and was a regular component of artistic cycles of the "Life of the Virgin". The couple meets at the "Golden Gate" of Jerusalem and embraces. They are aware of Anne's pregnancy, of which they have been separately informed by an archangel. For those believing in the virgin birth of Mary, this moment stood for her conception, and the feast was celebrated on the same day as the Immaculate Conception. The Birth of Mary, the Presentation of Mary and the Marriage of the Virgin were usual components of cycles of the Life of the Virgin in which Anne is normally shown. Anne is never shown as present at the Nativity of Christ, but is frequently shown with the infant Christ in various subjects. She is normally shown as present at the Presentation of Jesus at the Temple and the Circumcision of Christ. There was a tradition that she went (separately) to Egypt and rejoined the Holy Family after their Flight to Egypt.. Anne is not seen with the adult Christ, so was regarded as having died during the youth of Jesus. Saint Anne is especially invoked as the Patroness of all Mothers, against Sterility, for the Conception Difficulties, Infertility, help of the Pregnant, Women in Labor, and also the Grandparents. The feast day of Anne is 26 July.

Prayer to Saint Anne “Good St. Anne, you were especially favored by God to be the mother of the most holy Virgin Mary, the

Mother of our Savior. By your power with your most pure daughter and with her divine Son, kindly obtain

for us the grace and the favor we now seek.

Please secure for us also forgiveness of our past sins, the strength to perform faithfully our daily duties and the help we need to persevere in the love of

Jesus and Mary. Amen.”

“Good Saint Anne, pray for us.”
