St Pancras Redevelopment
Camden Patient and Public Engagement Group
meeting
Monday 6 November 2018
The best care for local people
The best research for the world
Today we would like to:
• Explain what changes we are trying to make in mental
health services
• Talk about the changes we are proposing to our services
and why
• Share plans for a formal public consultation
• Ask for your feedback and ideas
What we want to do
• Provide best in class, therapeutic mental health facilities across
Camden and Islington
• Move more of our services into the community, including creation of
vibrant and welcoming community hubs
• Build best in class, clinically proven, warm and welcoming inpatient
facilities
• With UCL create world-class research facilities to help us deliver
the very best care
St Pancras Now
Challenges at St Pancras
The Future
How we propose to do this
• Sell or lease most of the land on the St Pancras site to
another NHS organisation, and for housing, giving us
money to:
• Build a new state-of-the-art inpatient facility next to our
current Highgate centre.
• Build new community mental health hubs, including
one in Camden and another in Islington
• Build a new building on the St Pancras site for
community services and research
Benefits of proposed model
• Modern healthcare in new, warm and welcoming environments
• Community hubs will provide access to more services under
one roof
• Patients’ physical health needs can also be met as the new
inpatient facility will be located next to the Whittington Hospital
• Inpatients will be treated in a new therapeutic environment
• Change of locations will mean a shorter journey for a higher
percentage of patients, with easy rail and bus access
• We would keep a small part of the St Pancras site to bring our
research staff and facilities together, enabling them to work
together more effectively to turn world-class research into
tailored treatment plans
Where we are now
• We have already consulted widely.
• In January we plan to support our commissioners in a
formal consultation on our proposal that will last until April
• It will involve public meetings
• Involvement of Healthwatch in reaching ‘hard to reach
groups’
• A series of survey questions
Survey Questions
• Do you support the move of inpatient beds from the St Pancras
Hospital site to a state-of-the-art, purpose-built facility next to the
Whittington Hospital which is based opposite the Highgate Mental
Health Centre?
• Do you support the development of two new mental health community
hubs, including one in Camden and another in Islington, co-locating
some services currently offered across various locations?
• Do you support physical health and mental health services being
located together in these hubs to enable us to meet more of the care
and treatment needs of our patients at the same location?
Survey Questions
• Service users and staff have told us that they would like other non-
health related services as part of the hubs. For example; debt and
employment advice and training. Do you support the idea of services
which would be of benefit to our patients, but are provided by other
organisations, being located within the community mental health
hubs?
• If you support services from other organisations being offered space
within the community mental health hubs, please tell us what services
you feel would be of benefit to you and other patients and carers.
