Page 3: St. Patrick Catholic School · with a knowledge of His love for me and have I responded with a return of my love for Him and others? During these summer months, we might go on vacation,

Dear People of St. Patrick Parish, The 4th of July reminds us that half of 2015 has past. It gives us the opportunity to think about our relationship to our loving God these past six months. We look, to see how faithful we have been in attending Mass, Confession, Praying and how we treat each other. As the fireworks lite up the sky with beauty and joy, we think, have I let God lite up my life with a knowledge of His love for me and have I responded with a return of my love for Him and others? During these summer months, we might go on vacation, take a rest, or spend time with family and friends, lets also give a little more time to being happy with the Lord. In the Second Reading today, St. Paul tell us, there was a thorn in his side that he prayed the Lord would remove. We do not know if the thorn was physical, emotional or spiritual. We can ask St. Paul when we get to heaven. The important part is that the Lord told Paul, “My grace is sufficient for you.” That, is a reminder that the seven Sacraments give grace to help us in our journey of life. When we receive the Sacrament of Marriage, that means married in the Catholic Church by a priest or deacon, we receive the grace from God to help overcome any difficulties that arrive in the marriage. As we journey throughout life, God travels with us. He picks us up when we stumble, He dusts us off, He encourages us. Yes, as the Hymn says, “We have a friend in Jesus.” We all have thorns in our sides, but Jesus’ words to Paul are just as true for us, “My grace is sufficient for you.”

God Bless, Fr. Larry Young Pastor

A Special Thank You From Fr. Larry

I wish to thank you, the people of St. Patrick Parish and my other friends, for your outpouring of love to me on my reaching 75 years of life. God has given me these 75 years and I am grateful to Him. I am grateful to all of you for your hard work, your giving of your time, your generous gifts, etc. But, most of all, I am grateful that God has allowed me to be your shepherd and spiritual leader these past 15 years. We have journeyed together here at St. Patrick and it appears that Bishop Barber is going to continue to let us journey together until we all know it is time, whenever that might be. Thank you for being the great people you are and for putting up with me over the years.

God Bless,

51st International Eucharistic Congress On January 2016, the Church will celebrate the 51st International Eucharistic Congress in Cebu, Philippines. Bishop Barber is the US Bishops’ representative. On Care for our Common Home: Laudato Si’ Our Sunday Visitor is pleased to announce that Pope Frances’ Encyclical letter is available in a pamphlet that outlines all the major points to allow Catholics do delve deeper into the theme of the Encyclical letter and what Pope Francis is calling us as a Church to do. For more information on Laudato Si’ and how to order, please call, 1-800-348-2440, ext. 2173.

End of Life Bill Presently, a bill is working its way through the California legislative process in the form of SB128, which would permit physician-assisted suicide. Bishop Barber, and all California bishops, strongly opposes this legislation and urges all Catholics to educate themselves on the issue using the resources available from parishes, the Catholic press, and the diocesan website. The sick, elderly and dying deserve our love and support until the moment God calls them to Himself. For detailed information, visit, oakdiocese.org/SB128.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION

In the sixteenth century, the Council of Trent, which was otherwise devoted to liturgical uniformity, was very tolerant of age‑old marriage customs. The Council singled out “praiseworthy” customs and hoped they would be retained.

The Second Vatican Council likewise asked for a careful evaluation of customs, admitting that not everything about wedding practice is “praiseworthy.” In our revised liturgy, all of the prayers consistently stress the equality of the partners. Some familiar customs do not match this insight. Often, the groom remains hidden in a sacristy while the bride, accompanied only by her father, enters with her attendants. This is hardly equality, especially if it appears that her father is “giving her away” to her husband. This is a familiar enough scene, but increasingly couples are called to a different practice. Symbols and signs carry and communicate meaning. The challenge for couples today is to match the meaning to the symbol, and for the couple to be authentic in all they do and say on the day of their wedding. Having bride and groom both take part fully and equally in the entrance procession is exactly the kind of “praiseworthy” practice we’ve been looking for! —Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S.
