Our Holy Father’s Monthly Intention:

January 2018 Evangelization: Religious Minorities in Asia

That Christians, and other religious minorities in Asian countries, may be able to practice their faith in full freedom.

Thank you! Thanks to the many parishioners and friends of Saint Patrick’s who worked very hard to make our Christmas celebrations so prayerful and beautiful. Many hands and hours went into making our church shine, both inside and out. I am especially grateful to Stephen Conner for decorating our church on the outside. I do hope all of you have had the opportunity to pass by Saint Patrick in the evening to see the beautiful lights surrounding our church. Cindy Niven had a hand in preparing our beautiful creche inside our church along with decorating the altar with beautiful flowers in honor of our Lord’s nativity. Our parish choir, under the direction of Deborah Benedict and accompanist Daniel Savio outdid themselves – the music and singing were angelic and added much to our worship. I am also very grateful for the generous donations many of you made to our church over the holidays. Your financial support will help sustain the many wonderful programs we enjoy here at the parish. Your continued support will also help insure that the good news of Jesus Christ continues to be heralded in our local community of Larkspur and beyond. This parish community is an inspiration to me and I look forward to another wonderful year ahead growing in faith alongside each of you, my fellow parishioners. With warm good wishes and God’s blessings on you and your family and friends, I wish each of you a happy and healthy New Year! Monsignor Michael Padazinski

51ST WORLD DAY OF PEACE 1 JANUARY 2018

Peace to all people and to all nations on earth! Peace, which the angels proclaimed to the shepherds on Christmas night, is a profound aspiration for everyone, for each individual and all peoples, and especially for those who most keenly suffer its absence. Among these whom I constantly keep in my thoughts and prayers, I would once again mention the over 250 million migrants worldwide, of whom 22.5 million are refugees. Pope Benedict XVI, my beloved predecessor, spoke of them as “men and women, children, young and elderly people, who are searching for somewhere to live in peace.” In order to find that peace, they are willing to risk their lives on a journey that is often long and perilous, to endure hardships and suffering, and to encounter fences and walls built to keep them far from their goal. In a spirit of compassion, let us embrace all those fleeing from war and hunger, or forced by discrimination, persecution, poverty and environmental degradation to leave their homelands. We know that it is not enough to open our hearts to the suffering of others. Much more remains to be done before our brothers and sisters can once again live peacefully in a safe home. Welcoming others requires concrete commitment, a network of assistance and goodwill, vigilant and sympathetic attention, the responsible management of new and complex situations that at times compound numerous existing problems, to say nothing of resources, which are always limited. By practicing the virtue of prudence, government leaders should take practical measures to welcome, promote, protect, integrate and, “within the limits allowed by a correct understanding of the common good, to permit [them] to become part of a new society.” Leaders have a clear responsibility towards their own communities, whose legitimate rights and harmonious development they must ensure, lest they become like the rash builder who miscalculated and failed to complete the tower he had begun to construct. — excerpts from the Message of His Holiness Pope Francis for the celebration of the 51st World Day of Peace, 1 January 2018.

Mary, Mother of God

Mary the virgin, the spouse of Joseph, chosen by God from the first moment of her existence to be the mother of his incarnate Son. She is the “blessed among women” (Lk 1:42)(…) Her whole life was spent in the light of the Lord, within the radius of his name and of the face of God incarnate in Jesus, the “blessed fruit of her womb” (…) fully intent upon guarding and meditating in her heart upon everything concerning her son Jesus (Lk 2:19, 51). The mystery of her divine motherhood (…) contains in superabundant measure the gift of grace that all human motherhood bears within it, so much so that the fruitfulness of the womb has always been associated with God’s blessing. The Mother of God is the first of the blessed, and it is she who bears the blessing; she is the woman who received Jesus into herself and brought him forth for the whole human family. In the words of the liturgy: “without losing the glory of virginity, [she] brought forth into the world the eternal light, Jesus Christ our Lord” (Preface I of the Blessed Virgin Mary). — Benedict XVI, January 1, 2012
