Dear Parents,
We are fast approaching the end
of Week Four already and the pace has been hectic. Swimming
lessons are over; the Parent Information Evening has been conducted; the enrolment
meeting for the Sacramental programme has been held; and
we have commenced training for our first interschool event, which is the Super Eights Cricket
Carnival.
Many thanks to all the parents and grandparents who assisted with swimming lessons. Your
help is greatly appreciated by the staff and students and
contributed to the success of the lessons. For those students in Years 3 to 6 who may be
interested, swimming training will commence next week so that you
can build up your stamina and confidence to compete.
Information will go out on Skoolbag on how to register for
this. Once again if any parents feel confident to help out with the training, please contact Mr Yorke.
Extend After School Care
Our after school care numbers are slowly picking up and I am delighted to say Diana is doing a
great job making sure children are engaged and having fun. If
you are considering after school care, please read the information
over the page on how to enrol your child.

Digital Club Applications close on Friday so
any children in Years 4,5 or 6 wishing to join should apply to Mrs Caputi as soon as possible as
we only have 30 spots available. In the application students need
to state their name year level and commitment to attending all sessions so as not to be taking
the place of a more committed applicant.
Digital Club will run on Thursdays commencing at 7.30am and
finishing at 8.15am so all students are ready to commence
regular classes afterwards. Many thanks to Mrs Caputi and Miss
Paynter for volunteering to run this club in their own time.
Drive Through Pick Up The Drive through has been much
better the last few days, thanks to your cooperation and, while funerals and other events are out
of our control, we have seen a marked improvement in the
things we can control. The biggest difference is in the
staggering of pick up times so please remember students are
supervised after school until the gates for drive through are closed at 3.30pm, so there is no need to
be waiting here at bell time. This applies particularly to parents of
older students.

Making a Difference Volunteer
Program
The St Patrick’s Making a Difference
(MAD) volunteers will be a group who will
spend time on a regular basis working with
students in the classroom setting. The
volunteers will help the students to
consolidate skills.
Volunteers are needed for 2019 and we
hope that you will consider
participating. Parents/Grandparents can
choose a part of the day that will suit them
to come in and work with groups of
students. Volunteers can also commit to
help over a period of time that suits their
needs (5 weeks, 1 term or 1 semester).
We encourage you to consider the Making a
Difference program at St Patrick’s this
year. Please pick up a registration form
from the office for more information.

The children have been settling in very well
and are enjoying their time here at extend.
They have been participating in many indoor
and outdoor activities planned and of
children's interest, such as Valentine's Day
card making, painting, exploring the different
board games, cricket, tennis, bean bag toss
etc.
We are currently working on an enrichment
project with the children that the parents can
come and view during our open house day in
Week 8. We will write about it in more detail
in our next newsletter.
Many parents have been giving me feedback
that the children are looking forward to
coming to After Care at Extend and we are
steadily increasing in our enrolments, too.
Its lovely to know that the children are
enjoying their time at Extend After Care and
we look forward to many interesting
experiences in the coming weeks.
Vacation Care bookings are open on the
Extend website for our other Extend services
as we won’t be having vacation care at this
facility at the moment. There will be more
information in the next school newsletter.

Communication with teachers via email
and See Saw.
Our teachers are more accessible than they
have ever been with the introduction of
technology but they, like all people, need
down time. With this in mind I respectfully
request that communications are not sent
with an expectation of immediate response.
We have a fantastic staff who go above and
beyond; however, they may be teaching,
playing sport or spending time with their own
family and friends out of hours and they will
get back to you within 24 hours. If an urgent
message or response is required, please
contact the office. Thank you for your
support with this.

Lent begins on 6th March (Ash Wednesday).
Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are days of
abstinence. Ashes are placed on our
forehead in the sign of the cross as the
words; “Turn away from sin and be faithful
to the Gospel” are spoken to us. These
words emphasise our call to continual
conversion (leaving behind an old way of
living and acting in order to embrace new
life in Christ) and the need for ongoing
repentance (turning our lives more
completely over to Christ and his way of
life).
On Wednesday 6th March, the Basilica will
begin the special season of Lent. There will
be a Mass during the day. Children in Years
3 and 4 will attend at 9.00am, and the Years
5 and 6 at midday. The PP, Year 1 and 2
children will receive the ashes in their
classroom. The Lenten season extends over
a forty-six-day period, beginning on Ash
Wednesday and ending on the eve of Easter.
The six Sundays in Lent are not actually a
part of Lent and, therefore, the Lenten
season itself is forty days. Parents and
friends are more than welcome to come
along to the Masses. Next week, each child
will receive a Project Compassion Box to
take home.
Fasting and Abstinence During Lent
On Ash Wednesday and Good Friday, the
Church asks us to observe both abstinence
from meat and fasting.
For Christians fasting is one of the ways of
expressing penance. The other ways are
prayer, self-denial and works of charity. The
practice of fasting is given to us by the
Church to help us acquire mastery over our
instincts and freedom of heart (Catechism
#2043). All who are 18 and not yet 60 are
bound to fast. All who are over 14 are bound
to abstain.
The Australian Catholic Bishops' Conference
has not restricted our penance to fast and
abstinence in all cases - it leaves room also
for responsible individual choice, so that the
Ash Wednesday
Enrolments 2020
form of penance embraced will be
appropriate for our circumstances and
promote a stronger Christian spiritual life.
The Days of Penance, abstinence from meat,
and fasting are to be observed on Ash
Wednesday and Good Friday. All who have
completed their eighteenth year and have
not yet begun their sixtieth year are bound
to fast. All who have completed their
fourteenth year are bound to abstain. Lent
lasts from Ash Wednesday to the Mass of the
Lord's Supper exclusive. The Easter Fast is
observed on Good Friday and if possible on
Holy Saturday until the Easter Vigil. On all
Fridays of the year the law of the common
practice of penance is fulfilled by performing
any one of the following: a) Prayer - for
example, attending an additional Mass; a
time of Scripture study and prayer; making
the Stations of the Cross; praying the
Rosary. b) Self-denial - for example,
abstinence from meat; not eating sweets or
dessert; giving up entertainment; limiting
forms of food and drink and luxuries so as to
give to the poor and those in need. c) Deeds
of charity - for example, setting aside special
time and effort to help someone who is poor,
sick, elderly, lonely or overburdened.
If you have a child who was born between 1
July 2016 and 30 June 2017 they will be
eligible to attend Pre Kindy next year.
Children born between 1 July 2015 and 30
June 2016 can be enrolled for 4 Year Old
Kindy in 2020.
If you have younger children who fit the
above age criteria, or you know of someone
who does, please submit the necessary
documents to the school office as soon as
possible, or contact Administration for more
information.

Welcome to “Living Well”
Sleep – Is this useful in your home?
SOME SIMPLE SUGGESTIONS We know that sleep helps children to work and play like a champion. Here are some do’s and
don’ts to help achieve that:
Do: Set a regular bedtime - and stick to it Turn screens off at least 1 - 1.5 hours before bedtime
Make sure the last meal is finished an hour before bedtime Slowing and calming down activities, in the hour before bedtime
Expect that once in bed your child remains there Immediately return your child to their bed if they wish to join the parental bed: it’s not
their territory. Repeat the process if the child returns... and repeat... Be calm and firm.
Do not:
Allow a TV in your child’s or adolescent’s bedroom Permit a mobile phone, tablet, video game or computer to be in your child’s bedroom
overnight
Permit the excuse of, “I can’t get to sleep this early”, to abandon your quest for your child to experience the recommended sleep period. Remind your child that bed rest also
helps the body to recuperate and to be refreshed.
We know that bedtime can be a difficult time – after a day of work and school. We encourage you to keep to these Do’s and Don’ts because it will help us to do our job even better.
THANK YOU!

Student Leaders (photo above) -
Mackenzie, Adam, Victor, Ben, Ruby, Cinzia, Elena, Maria and Luca, were commissioned
as Year 6 leaders during our school Mass last Friday morning. May you all strive to be the best leaders that you can be!
Thought for the day ...
Simply give others a bit of yourself; a thoughtful act, a helpful idea, a word of
appreciation, a lift over a rough spot, a sense of understanding, a timely suggestion. You take something out of your
mind, garnished in kindness out of your heart, and put it into the other person's
mind and heart. - Charles H. Burr

We hope the children have enjoyed their two weeks swimming and are ready to knuckle
down in class for the rest of the term.
A reminder for those new parents who are on Facebook we would encourage you to join the
“St Pat’s Fremantle Parents and Friends” Facebook page. It’s a great communication tool and will keep you up to date with what is coming up and highlights of things passed.
We are still looking for somebody to take over the position of President of the P&F. The past President will be there 100% to support the new President and ease them
in showing them what to do. Please let the front office know if you are interested and Peta Evans is happy to have a chat and outline what is involved in the position. You have a great team P&F Exec to support you.
Again, another reminder to all the new families of the Gilbert’s Fresh Hilton – Support Our School Program. If you shop at Gilbert’s Fresh Hilton, we ask that next time you are
at the checkout please request to sign up to the program and nominate St Patrick’s Primary School. You will then receive a card which is scanned each time you shop at the store. 1%
from your shop is automatically donated to the customer’s nominated school, which in our case is St Patrick’s Primary School. We also ask that you tell your family, friends and
neighbours about this program, it is not just the St Patrick’s Community but the broader Community that would like to help our school.
School banking has recommenced on Wednesday mornings between 8.15am to 8.45am in the banking room. For all the new parents who would like to receive information on student banking please come to the banking room on Wednesday mornings and Jacinta
Edwards our banking rep will be more then happy to provide information packs to you.
Please make a note that the Term 1 Meeting for the P&F will be Tuesday 19th March at
