October 22 29th Sunday in Ordinary Time - Year A

From the Dean’s Desk

Dear Friends,

With today’s Gospel [Matthew 22:15-21] we

see the Pharisees teaming up with the

Herodians in order to place a snare – a trap – for Jesus. The

Herodians are mentioned in the Synoptic Gospels as plotting

the death of Jesus [Mark 3:6] and being in league with the

Pharisees in posing the question concerning taxes [Matthew

22:16-22; Mark 12:13-17]. Not much is known about them,

but there is speculation that they had some high esteem of

Herod the Great, seeing him almost as the Messiah. It is

unusual for such a pro-Roman group to be affiliated with a

strong Jewish group like the Pharisees. Matthew mentions

their unlikely allegiance to highlight the extent that both

parties disliked the actions of Jesus. In using the custom of

paying taxes to the Romans, they believe that they have

finally caught Jesus out. If he agrees that it is not just to pay

the Roman poll tax (a tax which every Jew detested paying)

they could report him as usurper and rebel and thus have the

Romans arrest and imprison him. If on the other hand he

states that it is alright to pay the Roman tax, he would lose

the good will of the people who believed that the tax was a

great imposition.

But Jesus turns the tables on them and even brings the

argument to another level by introducing the ‘tribute’ that

needs to be paid to God. In making the statement: ‘render

unto Caesar the things that belong to Caesar and to God the

things that belong to God’ many people believe that Jesus is

making a distinction between matters religious and secular.

This is far from the truth, as Jesus is challenging us to

recognise that through our immersion in the secular – as

kingdom people – we are rendering to God the things that

belong to God, as well as rendering to ‘Caesar’ what belongs

to him.

Francis de Sales [1567-1622] enlightens us in this area by

stating: “Be just and equitable in all your actions. Always put

yourself in your neighbour’s place and your neighbour in

yours, and then you will judge rightly. Imagine yourself the

seller when you buy and the buyer when you sell and you

will sell and buy justly… you lose nothing by living

generously, nobly, courteously and with a royal, just and

reasonable heart. Resolve to examine your heart often to see

if it is such toward your neighbour, as you would want your

neighbour to be toward you if you were in your neighbour’s

place. This is the touchstone of true reason.” (Introduction to

the Devout Life, Part III, Chapter 36).

Whether the obligations are great or small, we must strive to

always give what is due to our brothers and sisters. We must

strive to treat one another reasonably, fairly, humbly,

honestly and justly. In so doing we render to “Caesar” what is

“Caesar’s,” and we also render to God what is God's. In living

out the Gospel of love in all our dealings and relationships, we

are truly rendering to God all that he has given us, and in so

doing we can rejoice like the Thessalonians in today’s second

reading, that we have shown our ‘faith in action, worked for

love and persevered in hope, in our Lord Jesus Christ’ [1 Th

1:3].

We have heard a great deal lately about various politicians

who have either found out or have been discovered to be of

dual citizenship, thus putting into jeopardy their place in

parliament. Today we rejoice to find out that we, as

Christians, are indeed dual citizen. We are citizens of the

country in which we live and we are citizens of that greater

and more noble entity: the Kingdom of God. We have

responsibilities to both. We need to be aware of those

responsibilities and live up to them – to render to Caesar what

belongs to Caesar and to God what belongs to God.
