The First Sunday of the Ordinary cycle is celebrated as the Bapsm of the Lord in the River Jordan by John the Bapst [Mahew 3:13-17]. This encounter between the adult Jesus and his cousin John is a peculiar event. There is a level of awkwardness on the part of John who believes that it is he who should receive bapsm from Jesus and not the other way around [v. 14]. Jesusresponse to Johns dilemma is a lile baffling: Let it be for now! For thus it is fing for us to fulfil all righteousness[v. 15]. This fulfilment of righteousnessis a reference to Johns ministry of bapsm which challenges the one being bapsed to produce the appropriate fruit to repentance[Ma 3:8]. It seems a lile strange that Jesus the source of our salvaon is bapsed by John. By agreeing to Johns bapsm, Jesus is reverencing Johns mission as the Bapser, and highlighng Jesusconnectedness with sinful humanity. Dear friends, We have completed the Christmas season and now we begin the

Ordinary Cycle of Sundays that will see us to the end of the liturgical year

with the celebration of Christ the King on November 22nd. The First

Sunday of the Ordinary cycle is celebrated as the Baptism of the Lord in the River Jordan by

John the Baptist [Matthew 3:13-17]. This encounter between the adult Jesus and his cousin

John is a peculiar event. There is a level of awkwardness on the part of John who believes

that it is he who should receive baptism from Jesus and not the other way around [v. 14].

Jesus’ response to John’s dilemma is a little baffling: ‘Let it be for now! For thus it is fitting for

us to fulfil all righteousness’ [v. 15]. This ‘fulfilment of righteousness’ is a reference to

John’s ministry of baptism which challenges the one being baptised to ‘produce the

appropriate fruit to repentance’ [Matt 3:8]. It seems a little strange that Jesus the source

of our salvation is baptised by John. By agreeing to John’s baptism, Jesus is reverencing John’s

mission as the Baptiser, and highlighting Jesus’ connectedness with sinful humanity. The high

point of this encounter comes with the divine announcement from the heavens that ‘this is

my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased’ [v. 17].

This brings to mind our own Baptism, challenging us to see how seriously we take our

baptismal commitment. Quite often, Baptism is for us a ceremony that was conducted when

we were too young to take note of its importance. It can at times be reduced to a ceremony

that a Catholic family has to carry out because the remainder of the family has been baptised

– it becomes a family tradition.

Today we are challenged to consider the significance of our own Baptism when we became

children of God. We need to hear through faith the true meaning and challenge of the

proclamation that Jesus heard at his Baptism: ‘you are my beloved child with whom I am well

pleased’. Baptism allows us to be and act as a child of God. As with any child within the

structure of the human family it comes with rights and responsibilities. It opens for us the

sacramental life of the Church and challenges us to be faithful and active members of our

Church community. The Catechism of the Catholic Church [# 1266] puts it in plain terms

what our Baptismal duties and responsibilities are:

• To believe in God; to hope in God and to love God

• To live and act under the promptings of the Holy Spirit through the utilisation of the

gifts of the Holy Spirit

• To grow in goodness through the living out of the moral virtues.

As we begin this new year in which we will meet as Church during the Plenary 2020 Session

that asks us to consider what God is asking of us as Church, we need to renew our Baptismal

commitment and see that through Baptism we are challenged to conversion from sin; to an

active and full participation in our Parish community; in increasing our faith, hope and love

of God; to grow in holiness through the promptings of the Spirit and the use of the Spirit’s

gifts. We are God’s beloved children. May God be always pleased with us.

Why Do We Have Two Collections at Mass?

This is a question that is often asked . The two collections that are

taken up at Mass each week are equally important and are used

for two distinct purposes.

• The First Collection- The money the first collection raises goes

to the Clergy Support Foundation and is used to support the

daily living expenses of the priests in the Diocese.

• The 2nd collection, which includes the planned giving

program, is the main source of our parish income. The second

collection funds are used for the day to day running of our

parish.
