Study Leave

NZQA exams start on Thursday 10 November. All students have been issued with their Examination Slip which gives them a personalised timetable. They need to bring this slip to each exam. School uniform must be worn to exams. A reminder that students should be here 30 minutes before the exam starting times – so 9am for morning exams which start at 9.30am and 1.30pm for afternoon exams which start at 2pm. If there are any problems around exams please contact Mr David Martin, Assistant Rector. Over the next few weeks senior students are welcome to come back into school to study with their teachers or go to use the Library. They do not need to wear uniform. We do not want them here to socialise but they are very welcome to come and study. Tertiary Scholarships

The Ministry Team

These first few weeks of Term 4 have been an exciting time for our seniors, especially for our Year thirteens who have now had their final classes as students of the College. As is tradition, this time of transition for our leavers was marked by a Year 13 liturgy. This was organised by the students themselves and was an opportunity to gather as a year group and reflect on their time at St Patrick’s College. School songs were sung, memories were shared and each of the students were gifted with a badge to remind them of their continuing connection to the College. Inspired by when Jesus washed the feet of his disciples, the Year 13 leaders washed the hands of each of their fellow patricians. This was a deeply symbolic expression of the same servant leadership displayed by our student leaders throughout the year. On Friday 4th November the entire College community gathered for our Leavers’ Mass to officially farewell our Year thirteens. This mass was celebrated by Father Pat Brophy SM who challenged the students to always remember our school motto by holding firm to the faith. Each of the students were gifted with their old boys’ tie and a blue wristband inscribed with ‘Sectare Fidem’. A special blessing was prayed over the leavers and was further strengthened by a beautiful rendition of the Irish blessing sung by our College choir, Con Anima. All of the Year thirteens processed out of the hall boldly singing their college anthem for the very last time. Our prayers and thoughts go with all our Year thirteen leavers. Mr Maurice Atkinson Ministry Team Leader

Much art was purchased which made it a fantastic financial success

for the College. It was also a huge community event with the opportunity to enjoy refreshments and catch up with everyone. We have received many compliments on the evening and want to thank everyone who supported our event. This year also saw funds raised for our sister school St Catherine’s College who had their own display of work and the St Pat’s students art was also a highlight. We would like to thank our sponsors: Tommy’s Real Estate (Liz Potter); Victoria St Café; Pocock Hudson; Foot Law Ltd; Mojo; David & Maria’s Carpet & Vinyl Warehouse and Kevin & Julia O’Connor. WE NEED YOU!

The College Parents’ Association is a well organised group who meet once a month on a Monday night in the college staffroom. We hold only two fundraising events a year, one of those being the annual Big Boys Breakfast held every year on the 17th March. Five of our current parents who have been with us for the last five years while their boys have been at the College, are leaving, and we desperately need some new parents to join us with their new ideas and enthusiasm. We are holding our AGM next Monday 14th November 7.30pm in the College staffroom, and would love to see you. If you are unable to attend this meeting but would like to be part of the Parents’ Association then please contact Liz Potter on 027 2434042 or email [email protected] RELIGIOUS EDUCATION DEPARTMENT

On Friday 18 November we will be running our annual Year 10 health day. Students will be in school uniform for the day. ANTONIO DE GREGORIO WINS THE DUNSHEATH PLATE

The Wellington Speaking Union’s prestigious regional Junior Prepared Speaker Competition was held at St Catherine’s College on the 11th of October. Antonio de Gregorio represented St Patrick’s College by delivering his O’Shea Shield speech about families and what they mean to him. Having won his section in the O’Shea Shield competition it was a great achievement to then be awarded first place in the Wellington Regional Competition and receiving the Dunsheath Plate. Antonio spoke with poise and confidence which reflected the hard work he had put into writing and preparing his speech.

Antonio was coached by Ms Lynley Reid. ST PATRICK’S COLLEGE ROWING CLUB QUIZ NIGHT

Farewell to the class of 2016 and very soon we will welcome the class of 2017. It does make one feel old when shows like “1999” and books like “1984” were once so futuristic visions of our world. Have ideals and keep in touch with mum and dad. Change is a certainty so embrace it, but cling to the good

GOLF LESSONS

Golf lessons for beginners commence in February 2017 at Miramar Golf Course. These lessons are free, and taken by a professional coach after school once a week for six weeks. If you are interested please contact Mr Kevin McGrath - [email protected] SPORTS

McEvedy Shield training started this week under head of athletics Leigh Lidstone. While we acknowledge McEvedy is still 124 days away, the hard work has to start early. Thanks to the generosity of the St Patrick’s College Foundation, we have been able to put some power behind our programme. The Foundation is funding a strength and conditioning programme, which runs twice a week (Monday before school and Wednesday after school). The Foundation has also helped us secure the services of highly respected coaches Mike Ritchie (track and jumps) and Shaka Sola (throws). Track and field sessions at Newtown Park are on Tuesday, Wednesday (throws only) and Thursday after school and on Saturday morning. This is an open invitation to any student who has previously been outside the athletics programme to join in. A couple of students have already taken up this offer. These sessions will run up till December 24 – pause for four weeks – and re-start after Wellington Anniversary weekend. If you have any questions please contact [email protected]

Congratulations to year 13 student Josh de Reeper, who capped off his great year in the pool with selection this week in the New Zealand Schools waterpolo team for a tri-series against Australia and South Africa in Auckland from December 19-22. Josh is the only Wellington based player in the New Zealand team.

Do you like the look of the new school hoodie? Kilbirnie Sports will be stocking this hoodie from next month and it will cost $75. Hoodie sales will be open to the public but the College will control wording/printing quests e.g.: name of sport, player initials. Good luck to the following students, who are finalists in the College Sport Wellington awards dinner at Te Rauparaha Arena, Porirua, on Sunday evening: Benjamin Ellis (Athletics AWD), Billy Proctor (Rugby), Cassius Papera (Handball), Corey Le'aupepe (Basketball), Daniel Ward, (Rowing), Eden Cruise (Mountain-biking), John Sio (Volleyball), Joshua De Reeper (Waterpolo), Joshua Nairne (Athletics), Joshua Ngaia (Rowing), Kody Clueard (Softball), Luke Georgeson, (Cricket), Xavier Numia (Rugby). RUGBY SEVENS

For the second year in a row, our Senior Sevens team have won the Christian Cullen Cup for the Wellington Sevens Championships. This means that we have qualified for Nationals in Auckland 2-4 December. The team have been coached by Galu Letiu and Pio Savali, with support from Ryan Setefano, Rob Ngan-Woo and Amani Tuia. Earlier in the season, they competed in the Hurricanes Sevens Tournament, losing in a fierce game against Hastings Boys’ College. Captained by Saia Paese, the team have been working hard to ensure success in Auckland in a month. Thank you to Michelle Smyth for her expertise in managing this team. Our Under 15 team have also been invited to compete in the National Condors Tournament and played well in the Wellington U15 tournament last week. Despite a disappointment, and close loss to Wellington College, they bounced back and won the Bowl Final against Taita College 29-5. This team is also coached by Galu Letiu and Pio Savali though with great support from recent old boys Lawrence Lotovale and Kerrod Foaese.
