PRAYER Dear Parents, Students and Friends of the College White Ribbon Day 25 November is White Ribbon Day when we are encouraged to stand up, speak out and act to show we do not accept violence from men towards women. At St Patrick?s, respectful relationships with one another are at the core of what we do and who we are, with Christ as our centre. The message is that, as a society, violence against women is never ok. For further information click here. On Thursday, 30 November the College will be holding a fundraiser in support of White Ribbon Day. Students are asked to wear something white and bring a gold coin, with all proceeds going to women and other victims of domestic violence. Visiting Principals from Thailand We had the opportunity this week to host a group of visitors from Thailand consisting of 36 Salesian Priests and Religious Principals. They were fascinated with the College's approach to learning and teaching and the confidence of our learners. I would like to thank Mr James Clancy, Mr Wayne Northam, Mrs Jodie Hughes, Mr Declan Donohue and Mr David Di Donato for their work with smaller groups. This opportunity to host such visitors means we can make connections beyond St Patrick's and are an ideal opportunity to reflect on ourselves as a learning community. The College Assembly This week we gathered for the first time this term for a whole College Assembly. The agenda was packed with presentation of awards, acknowledgements and reflections. These included the introduction of our College leaders, over 30 Catechist awards for Year 11 who will now participate in the teaching program with Sutherland Public Primary School and Gymea Public Primary School; Nagle Education Alliance awards; Mathematics awards and Band award presentations from the Sutherland Shire Mayor. The Australian Mathematics Competition was introduced by the Australian Mathematics Trust in 1978 to challenge students to develop their mathematical thinking. Today students from around Australia and across more than 30 countries attempt the same problems.

Earlier this year, a number of students from Years 7 to 10 participated in the 2017 competition.

Annabelle Milner (left) from Year 7 achieved outstanding results which placed her in the top 0.3% of participants. She was awarded Best in School, a Prize Certificate and $70 voucher. Annabelle also received a Certificate of High Distinction for her participation in an associated competition - the Mathematics Challenge for Young Australians.

In addition, the following students achieved results which placed them in the top 20% of participants and were awarded Certificates of Distinction:

Year 9 - Anna Dau, Zara O?MahonyYear 8 - Elise Cranney, Daniel Poole, Dylan PurvisYear 7 - Andrea Beard, Sophie Hart, Flynn Kearney, Elijah Severino

A further 40 students received Certificates of Credit. We congratulate all these students.

Newm an Past oral Care Connect ions

In Week 5 of this term, the 10W Newman students met with 7W Newman students during Pastoral Care. The purpose was to form connections and support networks with students across year groups in the Newman program. Students openly discussed their feelings about being in the Newman class and how to deal with stress, stereotyping and labelling. Year 7 students used the opportunity to ask the Year 10 students for practical tips on how to survive the yearly exams and advice on how to tackle challenging Newman tasks.

Below is some feedback from both year groups:

?From this Newman experience I gained a lot of tips and suggestions on how to make a balance in our life while in the Newman program. I believe the year 10s were good leaders because they told us about their experiences and how we can learn from them. I picked up many tips such as not stressing, becoming close with people in my class and taking notes before exams.? - Ciara Crehan 7W

?The year 10s were very positive towards learning and gave lots of helpful tips on how to be more efficient when studying? - James Arrellano 7W

?After talking to the Year 10s I felt good. I could relate to them and felt comfortable because they had dealt with some of the same problems - including procrastination and distraction by technology!? - William Harrison 7W

?I found it easy to communicate with the Year 7s because everyone was relaxed. They were happy to ask questions and learn from our experiences.? - Esther O?Rourke 10W

?I enjoyed talking to the Year 7 Newman students about how to prioritise and juggle work- life-friend commitments.? - Sophie Crowe 10W

?I really liked giving the 7W students advice with study, and also sharing my own personal experiences. They shared their struggles with us and we helped them balance out their extra-curricular activities. They seemed happy to have heard our advice.? - Emily Nicholls 10W

?I think we did quite well as leaders and got them to open up to us a bit in terms of class, homework and study.? - Zoe Seidel 10W

?As a leader, I found it was a great opportunity to share experiences while also being able to provide encouragement, advice and another support network. I believe we helped them feel more comfortable and confident, allowing them to open up about their experiences.? - Megan De Silva 10W

Peer Tut or ing

This week was the last week of Peer Tutoring for the year. Thank you to all who participated and especially the Year 11 students who were there every week! Over the year I have seen really positive relationships form between all students. The students became very comfortable in asking for help, sharing ideas and supporting each other. Keep your eye out in the Newsletters in 2018 for information on the program next year.

Year 10 Celebrat ion Cakes

In Year 10 Food Technology, we have been studying the role of food when celebrating various special occasions. During this topic we were required to make a child?s birthday cake. Both classes took two practical lessons to prepare, bake, ice and finally decorate their cakes. This activity was thoroughly enjoyable and the end results were fantastic.

Year 11 Mar ine St udies Snorkell ing

During the week, the Year 11 Marine Studies class used the College pool as their version of the Great Barrier Reef to practise their snorkelling skills. Over a number of lessons, the students have to meet minimum swimming standards such as: swimming and snorkelling 200m in under five minutes, and snorkel without a mask and demonstrate three different swimming strokes. The class also conducted an underwater treasure hunt to practice their diving skills while snorkeling.

This is all in readiness for an excursion next year where the students will be snorkelling at Marley Lagoon, Bundeena.

Downie Trophy Cr icket

The Senior Cricket Team recently played their Round 2 fixture of the Downie Trophy State wide knockout competition against Aquinas College.

After losing to Aquinas at the same point in the competition as last year, we were determined to win through this year and secured a sport in Round 3 following an excellent bowling and fielding performance. Captain Cameron Creighton performed well with both bat and ball and the 84 from Mackenzie Holmes was the performance of the day.

Year 10 Boys Cr icket Grade Spor t Repor t 2017

After a relatively short summer grade sport term, the Year 10 Boys Cricket team achieved their goal of a ?three-peat? after winning the same competitions in Year 8 and Year 9. The team again showed their fine cricketing skills by winning every game this term and then winning the final last week against Bosco in convincing fashion, restricting the Bosco team to 59 runs off their 10 overs and then passing the score in the 5th over. The Bosco team were restricted to quite a low score by 6 wickets shared for 10 runs in the last 3 overs to Chris Giles, Mitchell Kensitt and Axel Smithson.

In reply, excellent batting by Alex Box, Mitchell (which included 3 ?8?s as sixers count as eight runs) and Axel (16 not out) gave St Pat?s the win. This was a wonderful way for the boys to end their grade sport involvement having started in Year 7 and now moving into Year 11 next year where there is no grade sport competition.

I have been very fortunate to have been a part of this team over the last 3 years, not just because of our success but, more importantly, for the way you have all conducted yourselves during this time. Your sense of fair play and sportsmanship was always on display and you represented the College each and every time with distinction. For example, I clearly recall the time in Year 8 when we were playing Aquinas at Heathcote Oval and one of their batsman was really struggling to hit the ball. Harrison Hewitt stopped the game, walked up to their player and showed him how to hold the bat correctly and to move your front foot forward to play the ball. What Harrison did that afternoon meant much more than winning. Yes it?s nice to win but when I see these types of actions in students it makes me very proud. Well done Harrison and also thank you for captaining the team in most games.

There have been some changes to the team over the three years but this is the final team which played this term.

Year 10 PASS Paddle Boarding and Snorkell ing Excursion

It was with some trepidation that 33 Year 10 Physical Activity and Sports Studies (PASS) students and 3 staff boarded the bus during a heavy shower of rain heading for the Bundeena Camping Grounds to undertake two sessions of Paddle Boarding and Snorkelling. Arriving at the grounds the weather began to clear, there was no wind and the water was smooth and clear. After dividing into 2 groups, group 1 set off on the paddle boards and group 2 into the rather cool water in the bay to snorkel.

For the paddle boarders, after an approximate 2 kilometre paddle, a rest was required and the group took some time out. The short paddle back to the main bay proved to be the real challenge as the tide was still coming in and the water under the footbridge was gushing quickly. A few rolled their boards (including myself) and a good drenching made for a few laughs.

The snorkelling section of the excursion proved to be a litt le more challenging with the water temperature rather cool and visibility and the number and size of aquatic life limited. While there were some small marine life spotted there wasn?t as much as we'd hoped for. So a quick shower at 2pm and onto the bus back to school. Thank you to Mrs Franke and Mrs Danzey for assisting and for Mr Northam for covering our classes back here at the College .
