Holy Week Schedule is on the final page of the bulletin
Why do we cover crosses and images
during Lent?
On the fifth Sunday of Lent, you probably have
seen our crucifixes and sacred images covered. In
the Roman Missal (the big red book that the
priest celebrant prays from), rubrics for the cele-
bration of the Fifth Sunday of Lent states: “In the
Dioceses of the United States, the practice of
covering crosses and images throughout the
church from this Sunday may be observed.
Crosses remain covered until the end of the
celebration of the Lord’s Passion on Good Friday
but images remain covered until the beginning of
the Easter Vigil.” But why do we cover crosses
and images during Lent?
The origins of this practice seem to come from a
medieval tradition of the “hunger cloth” which
was a huge violet cloth hung in front of the altar
to keep the congregation from viewing the altar.
Originally Lent was a time that public sinners
were “banished” from the church and had to do a
public display of penance. Over time the under-
standing that everyone is a sinner prevailed and
sinners were no longer restricted from the liturgy
in church, but the hunger cloth gave all attending
a “fast of the eyes.” This practice then gradually
developed into what it is today. And it is done on
the beginning of the Fifth Sunday of Lent, when
readings are now more focused and leading to the
Passion of our Lord Jesus Christ. The last two
Sundays of Lent are our immediate preparation
for the Easter Triduum.
According to Msgr. Peter J. Elliott: The custom of
veiling crosses and images in these last two
weeks of Lent has much to commend it in terms
of religious psychology, because it helps us to
concentrate on the great essentials of Christ’s
work of Redemption. (Ceremonies of the
Liturgical Year).
Sin has veiled us from salvation. Christ came to
lift that veil by his dying and rising.
Lenten blessings to all.
Fr. Tetzel
¿Por qué cubrimos cruces e imágenes
durante la Cuaresma?
En el quinto domingo de Cuaresma,
probablemente hayas visto nuestros crucifijos e
Cristo vino
a levantar ese velo muriendo y levantándose.
Bendiciones de Cuaresma para todos.
