Advent: A Season of Surprises
Some people really dislike surprises. Others love them. Surprises, of course, can be both good and bad or somewhere in between. As we make this Advent journey, accompanied by the Lukan Gospel, we will be faced with many surprises ahead.
Our first Sunday of Advent, Jesus says we will be dismayed and perplexed as we anticipate the fullness of the kingdom of God. Into our second Sunday of Advent, all of creation cries out with joy as it awaits the justice of God. The third Sunday of Advent, the level of anticipation increases tenfold as people are filled with expectation, hope and longing in their hearts to know and touch Christ. And just days before Christmas, on our fourth and final Sunday of Advent we encounter the pregnant Elizabeth, as she declares to the pregnant Mary, “blessed are you who believed that what was spoken to you by the Lord would be fulfilled” (Luke 1:45).
Advent innately encompasses many surprises. It is not a time of fear or bewilderment. It is not a time of shock or dismay. Advent is a time of surprise that is pregnant with the abundance of joy and hope. Advent is a journey, for us as Christians, as we hear those words of Elizabeth spoken to each of us: Blessed are we who believed that the many surprises of God would be fulfilled.
Happy Advent!
Fr. Tetzel
Feliz advenimiento P. Tetzel
