ANNOUNCEMENTS

ON-SITE WORSHIP: We continue to hold on-site worship at St. Paul Lutheran Church. We do so with the safety of attendees in mind, especially our seniors and others in the high risk category. Masks are optional, but recommended, and we ask that all attendees practice safe self-distancing protocols. We ask that everyone please continue to register on-line for on-site worship attendance. This registration process serves several purposes. It assures that we can accommodate on-site worship attendees. It helps us plan for ample worship folders for the services. And, finally, if we were to have a case of COVID-19 reported by one of our on-site worshippers, the registrations will help us contact all attendees at that service in an expedient manner. Sunday, May 16, 2021 – The wearing of masks is optional, but recommended. On-site worship with limited attendance to accommodate Safe Distancing in accord with current Safe Distancing Guidelines. Holy Communion will be offered on this Sunday. 8:00 a.m. – On-site worship with Holy Communion with 35 family units in attendance. Families will

PRAYER BEFORE DIVINE WORSHIP

Blessed Lord, You have caused all Holy Scriptures to be written for our learning. Grant that we may so hear them, read, mark, learn, and inwardly digest them that, by patience and comfort of Your holy Word, we may embrace and ever hold fast the blessed hope of everlasting life; through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.

ORDER OF DIVINE WORSHIP (Please silence your cell phones and mobile devices during our worship time.)

Pre-Service Music Welcome and Announcements Opening Hymn: “Here I Am to Worship”

1. Light of the World, You stepped down into darkness, Opened my eyes, let me see. Beauty that made this heart adore You, Hope of a life spent with You. Chorus: Here I am to worship, Here I am to bow down, Here I am to say that You’re my God. You’re altogether lovely, altogether worthy, Altogether wonderful to me. 2. King of all days, oh so highly exalted. Glorious in heaven above. Humbly You came to the earth You created, All for love’s sake became poor. Repeat Chorus I’ll never know how much it cost to see my sin upon that cross. I’ll never know how much it cost to see my sin upon that cross. Repeat Chorus

Prayer of the Day

Pastor: O God, the giver of all that is good, by Your holy inspiration grant that we may think

those things that are right and by Your merciful guiding accomplish them; through

Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit,

one God, now and forever.

Response: Amen.

New Testament Reading: Acts 10:34–48 34

Peter opened his mouth and said: “Truly I understand that God shows no partiality, 35

but in

every nation anyone who fears him and does what is right is acceptable to him. 36

As for the

word that he sent to Israel, preaching good news of peace through Jesus Christ (he is Lord of

all), 37

you yourselves know what happened throughout all Judea, beginning from Galilee after

the baptism that John proclaimed: 38

how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit

and with power. He went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil,

for God was with him. 39

And we are witnesses of all that he did both in the country of the Jews

and in Jerusalem. They put him to death by hanging him on a tree, 40

but God raised him on

the third day and made him to appear, 41

not to all the people but to us who had been chosen

by God as witnesses, who ate and drank with him after he rose from the dead. 42

And he

commanded us to preach to the people and to testify that he is the one appointed by God to

be judge of the living and the dead. 43

To him all the prophets bear witness that everyone who

believes in him receives forgiveness of sins through his name.” 44

While Peter was still saying these things, the Holy Spirit fell on all who heard the word. 45

And

the believers from among the circumcised who had come with Peter were amazed, because

the gift of the Holy Spirit was poured out even on the Gentiles. 46

For they were hearing them

speaking in tongues and extolling God. Then Peter declared, 47

“Can anyone withhold water

for baptizing these people, who have received the Holy Spirit just as we have?” 48

And he

commanded them to be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ. Then they asked him to remain

for some days.

Pastor: This is the Word of the Lord.

Response: Thanks be to God.

Epistle Reading: 1 John 5:1–8 1Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ has been born of God, and everyone who

loves the Father loves whoever has been born of him. 2By this we know that we love the

children of God, when we love God and obey his commandments. 3For this is the love of

God, that we keep his commandments. And his commandments are not burdensome. 4For

everyone who has been born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has

overcome the world—our faith. 5Who is it that overcomes the world except the one who

believes that Jesus is the Son of God? 6This is he who came by water and blood—Jesus Christ; not by the water only but by the

water and the blood. And the Spirit is the one who testifies, because the Spirit is the

truth. 7For there are three that testify:

8the Spirit and the water and the blood; and these three

agree.

Pastor: This is the Word of the Lord.

Response: Thanks be to God.

Gospel Reading: John 15:9–17 9[Jesus said:] “As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Abide in my love.

10If you

keep my commandments, you will abide in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s

commandments and abide in his love. 11

These things I have spoken to you, that my joy may

be in you, and that your joy may be full. 12

“This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you. 13

Greater love

has no one than this, that someone lays down his life for his friends. 14

You are my friends if

you do what I command you. 15

No longer do I call you servants, for the servant does not

know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, for all that I have heard from my

Father I have made known to you. 16

You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed

you that you should go and bear fruit and that your fruit should abide, so that whatever you

ask the Father in my name, he may give it to you. 17

These things I command you, so that

you will love one another.”

Pastor: This is the Gospel of the Lord.

Response: Praise to you, O Christ!

Apostles’ Creed

I believe in God the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth.

And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born

of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He

descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven

and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence He will come to judge

the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the

forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

Hymn of the Day, 554: “O Jesus, King Most Wonderful”

1. O Jesus, King most wonderful! O Conqueror renowned!

O Source of peace ineffable, In whom all joys are found:

2. When once You visit darkened hearts, Then truth begins to shine,

Then earthly vanity departs, Then kindles love divine.

3. O Jesus, light of all below, The fount of life and fire,

Surpassing all the joys we know, All that we can desire:

4. May ev’ry heart confess Your name, Forever You adore,

And, seeking You, itself inflame To seek You more and more!

5. Oh, may our tongues forever bless, May we love You alone

And ever in our lives express The image of Your own!

Sermon: “Overcoming the World”...................................................................................1 John 5:1-8

Offering Announcement and Blessing

Prayer of the Church

Lord’s Prayer

Our Father who art in heaven, Hallowed be Thy name; Thy kingdom come; Thy will be

done on earth as it is heaven; Give us this day our daily bread; And forgive us

our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; And lead us not into

temptation; But deliver us from evil; For thine is the kingdom and the power and the

glory forever and ever. Amen.

Benediction

Pastor: The Lord bless you and keep you. The Lord make His face to shine upon you and be

gracious to you. The Lord look upon you with favor and give you peace.

Response: Amen.

Closing Hymn, 660: “Stand Up, Stand Up for Jesus”

1. Stand up, stand up for Jesus,

Ye soldiers of the cross.

Lift high His royal banner;

It must not suffer loss.

From vict’ry unto vict’ry

His army He shall lead

Till ev’ry foe is vanquished,

And Christ is Lord indeed.

2. Stand up, stand up for Jesus;

The trumpet call obey;

Stand forth in mighty conflict

In this His glorious day.

Let all His faithful serve Him

Against unnumbered foes;

Let courage rise with danger

And strength to strength oppose.

3. Stand up, stand up for Jesus;

Stand in His strength alone.

The arm of flesh will fail you,

Ye dare not trust your own.

Put on the Gospel armor;

Each piece put on with prayer.

Where duty calls or danger,

Be never wanting there.

4. Stand up, stand up for Jesus;

The strife will not be long;

This day the din of battle,

The next the victor’s song.

The soldiers, overcoming,

Their crown of life shall see

And with the King of Glory

Shall reign eternally. Text/Music: Public Doman; CCLI License # 1801824
