    The current St. Paul'sCathedral is the fourthCathedral to bear the

    name. It is a domedneoclassical church designedby Sir Christopher Wren. Itis 365 feet high at the cross,and the total length is 574feet. The nave is 223 feetlong and 121 feet wide.

    The DomeOne of the most prominent

    features of St. Paul's is thedome. The dome lies atthe intersection of the naveand transepts at the centerof the cross made by the

    cathedral. The domeconsists of three domes,an exterior decorativedome, an interior dome,and a brick support domethat supports the othertwo.It is the second largestdome in the world.

    The Western Facade & Towers

    The main entrance islocated at the west end alongwith the west-work towers. The towers

    have an exaggerated void soas to make them stand out ata distance. Thetowers consist of centralcylinders rising through thetiers andpaired Corinthian columns.

    The clock towers were not part of the original design,

    but were added by Wren in 1707.

    The Nave

    The Nave is the space

    intended for largecongregation services. Itcontains many memorials,mostly to fallen servicemembers. On either side arethe aisles which have smalldomes that imitate the largerdomes on the roof of thenave.

    Chapels

    There are three small chapels in

    the aisles of the nave. St. Dustin'sChapel was one of the first partsof the cathedral to come intouse. It was originally intended forsmall congregations and a fewclergy to say morningprayers. The All Souls Chapelwhich is dedicated to the soldiersof World War I. There is also The

    Chapel of the Order of St. Michaeland St. George which wasoriginally used for the Bishop topass judgement on the clergy.

    The Importance of St. Paul's

    St. Paul's is an importantsymbol of London, and one of themost prominent features on theLondon skyline. It was the

    location of the wedding betweenPrince Charles and PrincessDiana, and was a symbol ofBritish resistance during the battleof Britain in World War II. It wastargeted by bombs several timesand almost destroyed by one in1940.
