ORDER FOR THE
CELEBRATION & WORSHIP OF GOD
Easter Day—The Resurrection of the Lord; April 12, 2020, 10:30 A.M.
WELCOME
ENTERING GOD’S PRESENCE
INSTRUMENTAL PRELUDE “THINE BE THE GLORY” MACCABAEUS
CALL TO WORSHIP ISAIAH 25:6–9
Minister: On this mountain, the LORD of hosts will make for all peoples a feast of rich food,
a feast of well-aged wine, of rich food full of marrow, of aged wine well refined.
And He will swallow up on this mountain the covering that is cast over all
peoples, the veil that is spread over all nations. He will swallow up death forever;
and the Lord God will wipe away tears from all faces, and the reproach of his
people He will take away from all the earth, for the LORD has spoken. It will be
said on that day, “Behold, this is our God; we have waited for Him, that He might
save us. This is the LORD; we have waited for Him; let us be glad and rejoice in
his salvation.”
Minister: Hallelujah! Christ is risen!
People: The Lord is risen indeed!
Minister: This is the good news—the grave is empty.
Unison: Christ is risen! Hallelujah!
5. Hail, the Lord of earth and heav’n! Alleluia!
Praise to thee by both be giv’n; Alleluia!
thee we greet triumphant now; Alleluia!
hail, the Resurrection, thou! Alleluia!
PRAYER OF ADORATION
Minister Almighty God, who through your only-begotten Son Jesus Christ overcame
and People: death and opened to us the gate of everlasting life: Grant that we, who celebrate
with joy the day of the Lord’s resurrection, may be raised from the death of sin
by your life-giving Spirit; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns
with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.
PSALTER READING PSALM 16 1 Preserve me, O God, for in you I take refuge. 2 I say to the Lord, “You are my Lord;
I have no good apart from you.”
3 As for the saints in the land, they are the excellent ones,
in whom is all my delight.
4 The sorrows of those who run after another god shall multiply;
their drink offerings of blood I will not pour out
or take their names on my lips.
5 The Lord is my chosen portion and my cup;
you hold my lot. 6 The lines have fallen for me in pleasant places;
indeed, I have a beautiful inheritance.
7 I bless the Lord who gives me counsel;
in the night also my heart instructs me. 8 I have set the Lord always before me;
because he is at my right hand, I shall not be shaken.
9 Therefore my heart is glad, and my whole being rejoices;
my flesh also dwells secure. 10 For you will not abandon my soul to Sheol,
or let your holy one see corruption.
11 You make known to me the path of life;
in your presence there is fullness of joy;
at your right hand are pleasures forevermore.
Minister: The Word of the Lord!
People: Thanks be to God!
PRAYER OF CONFESSION
Minister Almighty God, You have raised Jesus from the grave and crowned Him Lord of
and People: all. We confess the ways we have not bowed before Him or acknowledged his
rule in our lives. Forgive us, God of mercy. Help us to trust your power to
transform our lives, that we may know the joy of abundant life given in Jesus
Christ. Lord, bring new love where we have turned hard-hearted; forgiveness
where we have been wounded; and the joy and freedom of your Holy Spirit
where we are prisoners of ourselves. Amen. Please take a moment to silently confess your sin.
PRONOUNCEMENT OF FORGIVENESS Minister: Hear this good news! Our Lord Jesus Christ was delivered up for our trespasses
and raised for our justification. Through him we have obtained access by faith
into this grace in which we stand, and we rejoice in hope of the glory of God.
Unison: Thanks be to God!
A LITANY FOR EASTER
Minister: Almighty God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, we praise and adore You for
the immeasurable greatness of your power toward us who believe, according to
the working of your great might, which You exercised in Christ when You raised
him from the dead.
People: Glory! Hallelujah! You have delivered our souls from death, our eyes from
tears, our feet from stumbling that we might rejoice in the land of the living.
Minister: On this glorious feast of the resurrection, we praise You, Lord Christ.
People: Worthy is the Lamb who was slain to receive power and wealth and wisdom
and might and honor and glory and blessing, for by your blood You ransomed
us for God. You are the Author of life, and it is not possible for death to hold
You.
Minister: Death is swallowed up in victory. O death, where is your victory? O death, where
is your sting?
People: The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law. But thanks be to God,
who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ!
Minister: In the peace of the risen Christ and the power of his resurrection, let us pray to
the Lord:
People: Hear us, Lord of life.
Minister: Your going is as sure as the dawn. Come to us as the showers, as the spring rains
that water the earth.
People: Hear us, Lord life.
Minister: Satisfy us in the morning with your steadfast love, that we may rejoice and be
glad all our days. Make us glad for as many days as You have afflicted us, and
for as many years as we have seen evil.
People: Hear us, Lord of life.
Minister: That we might seek the things that are above where You are seated and that we
might be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in your work, O Lord,
knowing that in You our labor is not in vain.
People: Hear us, Lord of life.
Minister: That You might crush beneath our feet the prince of darkness and his power.
People: Hear us, Lord of life.
Minister: Let us behold your face in righteousness; when we awake, let us be satisfied with
your likeness. Just as we have borne the image of the man of dust, may we also
bear the image of the man of heaven.
People: Hear us, Lord of glory.
Unison: May your kingdom come, and your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.
For yours is the power and the kingdom and the glory through your Son our
Lord Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God,
now and forever. Amen.
HYMN OF PRAISE #276 “UP FROM THE GRAVE HE AROSE”
CHRIST AROSE
RENEWING OUR FAITH
AFFIRMATION OF FAITH HEIDELBERG CATECHISM Question #45
Minister: How does Christ’s resurrection benefit us?
Minister First, by his resurrection, He has overcome death, so that He might make us
and People: share in the righteousness He won for us by his death. Second, by his power,
we too are already now resurrected to a new life. Third, Christ’s resurrection
is a guarantee of our glorious resurrection. Thanks be to God!
GLORIA “GLORY BE TO GOD IN HEAVEN”
Beethoven; ODE TO JOY
Glory be to God in heaven; peace, goodwill to all the earth.
Mighty God of all creation, Father of surpassing worth:
We exalt You, we adore You, we lift high our thanks and praise.
Saints and angels bow before You; here on earth our songs we raise.
Glory be to Christ forever, Lamb of God and Lord of love.
Son of God and gracious Savior, You have come from heav’n above;
On the cross You died to save us; now You reign at God’s right hand.
Hear our prayer; restore, forgive us; in your promise firm we stand.
GOSPEL LESSON LUKE 24:1-53
24 But on the first day of the week, at early dawn, they went to the tomb, taking the spices
they had prepared. 2 And they found the stone rolled away from the tomb, 3 but when
they they went in they did not find the body of the Lord Jesus. 4 While they were perplexed about
this, behold, two men stood by them in dazzling apparel. 5 And as they were frightened and
bowed their faces to the ground, the men said to them, “Why do you seek the living among the
dead? 6 He is not here, but has risen. Remember how he told you, while he was still in
Galilee, 7 that the Son of Man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men and be crucified
and on the third day rise.” 8 And they remembered his words, 9 and returning from the tomb
they told all these things to the eleven and to all the rest. 10 Now it was Mary Magdalene
and Joanna and Mary the mother of James and the other women with them who told these things
to the apostles, 11 but these words seemed to them an idle tale, and they did not believe
them. 12 But Peter rose and ran to the tomb; stooping and looking in, he saw the linen cloths by
themselves; and he went home marveling at what had happened.
13 That very day two of them were going to a village named Emmaus, about seven miles from
Jerusalem, 14 and they were talking with each other about all these things that had
happened. 15 While they were talking and discussing together, Jesus himself drew near and went
with them. 16 But their eyes were kept from recognizing him. 17 And he said to them, “What is
this conversation that you are holding with each other as you walk?” And they stood still,
looking sad. 18 Then one of them, named Cleopas, answered him, “Are you the only visitor to
Jerusalem who does not know the things that have happened there in these days?” 19 And he said
to them, “What things?” And they said to him, “Concerning Jesus of Nazareth, a man who was a
prophet mighty in deed and word before God and all the people, 20 and how our chief priests
and rulers delivered him up to be condemned to death, and crucified him. 21 But we had hoped
that he was the one to redeem Israel. Yes, and besides all this, it is now the third day since these
things happened. 22 Moreover, some women of our company amazed us. They were at the tomb
early in the morning, 23 and when they did not find his body, they came back saying that they
had even seen a vision of angels, who said that he was alive. 24 Some of those who were with us
went to the tomb and found it just as the women had said, but him they did not see.” 25 And he
said to them, “O foolish ones, and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have
spoken! 26 Was it not necessary that the Christ should suffer these things and enter into his
glory?” 27 And beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, he interpreted to them in all the
Scriptures the things concerning himself.
28 So they drew near to the village to which they were going. He acted as if he were going
farther, 29 but they urged him strongly, saying, “Stay with us, for it is toward evening and the
day is now far spent.” So he went in to stay with them. 30 When he was at table with them, he
took the bread and blessed and broke it and gave it to them. 31 And their eyes were opened, and
they recognized him. And he vanished from their sight. 32 They said to each other, “Did not our
hearts burn within us while he talked to us on the road, while he opened to us the
Scriptures?” 33 And they rose that same hour and returned to Jerusalem. And they found the
eleven and those who were with them gathered together, 34 saying, “The Lord has risen indeed,
and has appeared to Simon!” 35 Then they told what had happened on the road, and how he was
known to them in the breaking of the bread.
36 As they were talking about these things, Jesus himself stood among them, and said to
them, “Peace to you!” 37 But they were startled and frightened and thought they saw a
spirit. 38 And he said to them, “Why are you troubled, and why do doubts arise in your
hearts? 39 See my hands and my feet, that it is I myself. Touch me, and see. For a spirit does not
have flesh and bones as you see that I have.” 40 And when he had said this, he showed them his
hands and his feet. 41 And while they still disbelieved for joy and were marveling, he said to
them, “Have you anything here to eat?” 42 They gave him a piece of broiled fish, 43 and he took
it and ate before them.
44 Then he said to them, “These are my words that I spoke to you while I was still with
you, that everything written about me in the Law of Moses and the Prophets and the Psalms
must be fulfilled.” 45 Then he opened their minds to understand the Scriptures, 46 and said to
them, “Thus it is written, that the Christ should suffer and on the third day rise from the
dead, 47 and that repentance for the forgiveness of sins should be proclaimed in his name to all
nations, beginning from Jerusalem. 48 You are witnesses of these things. 49 And behold, I am
sending the promise of my Father upon you. But stay in the city until you are clothed
with power from on high.”
50 And he led them out as far as Bethany, and lifting up his hands he blessed them. 51 While
he blessed them, he parted from them and was carried up into heaven. 52 And they worshiped
him and returned to Jerusalem with great joy, 53 and were continually in the temple blessing
God.
