A Loving Church, Making a Difference in the World
Letter from the Pastor
As we approach March, we enter the season of Lent. We are through Ash Wednesday and
taking the first steps on our journey to the cross. This Lenten road is a long one. While it begins
with palm branches and a savior who is greeted as a hero, we know that it will eventually lead to
his death as a political prisoner and someone deemed subversive to the ruling elite.
Sometimes I believe we lose this. We know the story of Jesus and how he gave his life for us
so that we may have eternal life. What we forget is just how radical Jesus is. He stood up and
questioned the unfair and unjust things happening around him. He wouldn’t allow for the
marginalized and oppressed to continue to be treated unfairly.
We have this sanitized version of Jesus who is nice and neat. I hate that. I hate that we have
this nice version who fits in a box and then just says these nice things about how to live, and then
fades into the background when we need a little pick-me-up. Jesus isn’t that way, nor is the gospel.
It isn’t clean, it isn’t nice, and it isn’t a pretty little package that is meant to make us feel better.
Instead this is messy. It’s radical. It’s something that is meant to shake the world up and turn
the established order on its head. It is not something that is supposed to give us a nice warm fuzzy
feeling, but something that is supposed to shock us and make us aware of how different the world
needs to be…how unfair and in need of a shake-up it is. We need to look at the gospel and see how
radical and subversive it is—how much of a shot in the arm that the message should be and how
shocking Jesus’ message is.
This isn’t something we should be satisfied with. It’s not something we should look at and
think “well isn’t this nice”. It should shock us! It should wake us up and show us how much the
world has strayed from the path of righteousness and make us be people who take this call of God
to heart. We should not simply want to hear a nice story, but to change the world.
Respectfully,
Rev. Jeff Mueller

Outreach Committee
St. Paul’s UCC is wanting to form an outreach committee to help meet the needs of those on our prayer list. We recognize the work of the Membership Care Committee, but we are looking to see if there are other needs we can
help meet. We are looking to form a committee but would like to have a meeting to discuss the idea with those who are interested, to shape a clearer vision and goal. If interested in attending the meeting, please sign up on the sheet in the lobby, and you will be contacted soon to determine a meeting date and time. Contact a council member with questions.
“One More Thing…Lenten Sacrifices”
For most religions, the traditional practices for lent are prayer, fasting
(abstaining from certain foods), and almsgiving (giving money or food to the needy).
Whatever method of discipline one uses to deepen his/her awareness of the sacrifices
Jesus made for us is the point.
Here are some new ideas of “sacrificing for lent:” ➢ Giving up a bad habit, whether it be an indulgence (certain foods, drink, tobacco, gambling,
etc.), or a way of thinking or responding to a certain situation (i.e. envy, jealousy,
selfishness, greed, impatience, gossip, avoidance, etc.). Replace a bad habit with a good
one, such as conserving water, electricity, or recycling—go green… Or begin a new healthier
diet by giving up a habit of eating “unhealthy” foods, or starting an exercise regimen for
healthier living… Or begin a daily devotional time of meditation, reading, or prayer.
➢ Giving of your time—maybe spend more time with loved ones or a friend you seldom see,
visiting a shut-in or a neighbor down the street to help him/her with a difficult chore
(perhaps a ride to church or the store, or to see a movie), reading to them, or sharing a meal.
People long for time spent with others more than any frivolous item—especially children.
➢ Spend time serving the needy—at a soup kitchen, the food pantry, a nursing home,
children’s hospital, or a shelter. Otherwise, begin to routinely give monetarily.
Regardless of what one “gives up,” or “gives,” the point of sacrifice during lent
is to put oneself on a challenging path in order to identify with the sacrifices
Jesus made for each one of us. It is not necessary that you go it alone—
have others walk this journey with you as you seek to grow in your faith and
in your walk with Jesus. You’ll be amazed at what you learn!

Need Some Luck? A four-leaf clover is supposed to bring luck, mainly
because it’s rare – most clover have only three leaves, finding a four-leaf one is about a one in 10,000 chance!
Long ago Europ-eans thought that a rabbit was a lucky animal.
This, with African-Ameri-can traditions, made the North American practice of carrying around a rabbit’s foot for luck, often on a keychain.
The tradition of a bride putting a penny in her shoe
on her wedding day is said to bring the couple prosperity!
Knocking on wood will protect you from bad luck.
this originated in Germanic folklore.

DO YOU KNOW? How long does it take for blood to cycle through your body?
a.) about 4 minutes b.) about 3 minutes c.) about 2 minutes d.) about 60 seconds (Answer below)
RED CROSS BLOOD DRIVE—Blood Facts:
• On any given day, an average of 38,000 units of red blood cells are needed for hospital patients in the U.S.
• One in 10 people entering the hospital needs blood. • Red blood cells must be transfused within 42 days. • A single car accident victim can require as many as 100 pints of blood. • The blood type most often requested by hospitals is type O. • There is no substitute for human blood. It cannot be manufactured.
Facts about donors • Only 9 percent of people in the U.S. have type O negative blood. Type O
negative donors are universal red cell donors as their blood can be given to people of all blood types—always in great demand and often in short supply.
• Type O negative blood is needed in emergencies before the patient's blood type is known and with newborns who need blood.
• Forty-eight percent of people in the U.S. have type O (positive or negative) blood.
• Only 3 percent of people in the U.S. have AB positive blood type. AB positive type blood donors are universal donors of plasma, which is often used in emergencies, for newborns and for patients requiring massive transfusions. AB plasma is also usually in short supply.
