Sixth Sunday in Easter May 26, 2019

“Clothe Yourself with Christ” by Fr. Eric Andersen

In this Easter season, and looking ahead to the sum-mer months, we should not forget the beauty of a soul in the state of sanctifying grace. The Holy Spir-it makes a soul beautiful by His indwelling in bap-tized Christians. One of the fruits of the Holy Spirit is Modesty. It is especially important in the sum-mertime to remember to dress and act modestly when you come to church. As a priest, I wear plain priestly clothing everyday outside of divine worship - usually the cassock: the simpler the better outside divine worship. But when I come into the church to celebrate Mass, in the per-son of Christ, I clothe myself with Jesus Christ - in splendid vestments to reflect His heavenly splendor and glory. Sundays and Holy Days merit finer vest-ments, while workdays allow for simpler ones. The faithful should consider how this applies to them. If it is a workday, your clothing might be sim-ple, including uniforms, or other work-related cloth-ing, provided that they are modest. On Sundays and Feast days, if possible, wear your best. Fr. Christo-pher Hathaway, FSSP writes the following: “Men, we are inclined to be careless or slovenly about what we wear, even at Holy Mass; and young men are prone to deliberately neglect their dress so as to at-tract attention. At Holy Mass, men should wear a coat and tie; or, at least, a collared shirt and nice slacks. Young men must be taught that baggy pants are not appropriate; that their hair be nicely cut and combed; that shirts be clean and without slogans or cross bones or a dragon…or anything which may give Satan the appearance of being honored” (qtd. Amanda Evinger, “Modesty: A Gift to be Savored”. Latin Mass Magazine, Winter-Spring 2019, p. 63). Fr. Chad Ripperger writes: “Modesty governs man’s exterior actions so that he does what he ought, when he ought and how he ought…and this pertains not just to one’s dress,…but to all forms of externals, from dress, to possessions, to what we say and do” (Introduction to the Science of Mental Health, p. 429). “True love of neighbor, i.e., charity, seeks the good of the neighbor and will inherently move one to moderate the dress so as not to elicit thoughts in the minds of others that are not appropriate” (p. 430). Responding to the increase of immodest fashions, the Holy See, in 1956, issued “directive guidelines

Lovely Lady Dressed in Blue Lovely Lady dressed in blue — Teach me how to pray! God was just your little boy, Tell me what to say! Did you lift Him up, sometimes, Gently on your knee? Did you sing to Him the way Mother does to me? Did you hold His hand at night? Did you ever try Telling stories of the world? O! And did He cry? Do you really think He cares If I tell Him things — Little things that happen? And Do the Angels' wings Make a noise? And can He hear Me if I speak low? Does He understand me now? Tell me — for you know. Lovely Lady dressed in blue — Teach me how to pray! God was just your little boy, And you know the way. Mary Dixon Thayer who wrote more than one poem for Our La-dy, is the author. This prayer-poem was popularized in the 1950s by Ven. Fulton Sheen.

for modest dress” as follows: “A dress cannot be called decent which is cut deeper than two fingers breadth under the pit of the throat; which does not cover the arms at least to the elbows; scarcely reaches a bit beyond the knees. Furthermore, dresses of trans-parent materials are improper” (qtd in Evinger, p. 61). Father Hathaway comments: “Now a woman might complain, ‘this is too much.’ And while it is true that men must practice responsible self-control, it is equal-ly true that women respect the nature of man whose imagination is easily stirred by the woman’s figure and adequately veil parts of her body…otherwise she may sin against modesty and charity towards neigh-bor” (ibid. p. 61). Let us use this summer and the warmer weather as an opportunity to cultivate the virtue of modesty, which need not be drab but should be handsome and lovely. This parish belongs to Our Lady’s Immaculate Heart. Let us not offend Our Lady, but rather honor her by exemplifying modesty of dress for our fellow parish-ioners, for our visitors, for our Blessed Lord Jesus Christ and for His honor and glory.

Amanda Evinger," Modesty: A Gift to be Sa-vored ". Latin Mass Magazine, Invierno-Primavera 2019 , p. 63).

Did You Know? — What risks are worth it for children? In today’s society, parents are often torn between protecting their chil-dren, and letting them experience life and even make mistakes. Safety is vitally important, but there is value in learning from experience and from mistakes, too. There may be times when parents wonder if they have gone too far in their efforts to safeguard children, perhaps inad-vertently rendering them children less prepared to handle real-life situa-tions, For help in discerning when learning from experience may be appropriate see the VIRTUS® article “Safety vs. Resilience in Child-hood.” For more information, visit http://www.la-archdiocese.org/org/protecting/Pages/VIRTUS-Current-Online-Articles.aspx.

Wishing you a peaceful and blessed Memorial Day.

With the fighting forces no group equally large is so revered. It is their high calling to the defense of jus-tice and freedom that makes them loved. It was a sol-dier who first uttered the words recalled by the Church at Communion: 'Lord I am not worthy to have Thee come under my roof but only say the word, and my servant will be healed.' (Matt 8:8)" ~ Venerable Archbishop Fulton Sheen —————————————————————

(Mateo 8: 8) ~Ven. Fulton Sheen
