From the Pastor’s Desk

Dear Parishioners:

Many people, month after month, call and write in asking to have a candle lit for their intention, asking for the intercession of St. John Neumann. The standard protocol is to make sure their prayers and petitions are prayed for and then to light a candle that will burn in the church. You routinely see them burning on both the side altars dedicated to St. Joseph, the Blessed Mother, in the side chapel dedicated to Our Mother of Perpetual Help, and the back lobby racks in front of the statuary. The color of the candles to be lit in the church are never promised nor specified. The Shrine staff typically handles all of the particulars and orders the candles in a variety of colors. Purple is typically used during Lent, Red & Green during Christmas. We usually try to match the Liturgical Season. The Priests really do not pay much attention to the candles since they are changed regularly every month, and the priest is facing the congregation and the front doors of the church about 95% of the time. However, this past Sunday… was rather unique. That is to say, one of the parishioners commented on how appropriate the candles were in the Sanctuary - sharing this with me after Mass. It was only then did I realize that ALL of the candles in the Sanctuary were green and white. All of them. It just so happens that the Eagles team colors are also - green & white. Coincidence? I checked the supply, and yes, other colors are available in our present inventory. It was at this point that I realized… I had been bamboozled!!! There would be no prayers in the Eucharist or prayers of the faithful asking God to grant an Eagles victory… for that would be highly inappropriate from a theological and liturgical perspective. However, I remember the great Roman Empire and all of the effort made to try and extinguish the Spirit of the early Christian community. Despite banning the practice of the faith, imprisonment, confiscating house and property, and even the pains of death… nothing squelched the spirit of those who believed. One Deacon in the archdiocese ended up on the cover of the local Philadelphia paper while brandishing the - now famous - “Under Dog” mask! I wish our hometown team the very best in this Sunday evening’s Super Bowl. I am not convinced that God follows the NFL or not, but we sure want to cheer our home team on. It would be so nice to have the trophy make its home here in Philly for the next year. The fans certainly have shown their dedication and belief in the Eagle’s players. I am not sure how long the candles will last before the flame goes out. But there is one thing of which I am certain. The flame of hope and joy will not Cont’d p. 2

May you and your families enjoy a good game, fellowship, and the excitement of what has been a winning series thus far. We are grateful that we have made it as far as we did, when so many were ready to count us out. Perhaps the winning play might just be settled by one of those famed “Hail Mary” passes!?! To quote Tiny Tim, “May God Bless us all… every one!” Enjoy the game!
