1. Take time to read and reread this Gospel, noticing which words, phrases draw your attention.
2. What new insights does the passage give you about Jesus?
Allow yourself to hear Jesus speaking these words to you today. Take time to respond to Jesus in
prayer.

How receiving the Eucharist nourishes your community

For Conversation:
The enormity of God’s love for each one of us.
To prepare for this prayer, spend a few moments asking the Holy Spirit to open your mind and heart to
hear this Word being spoken to you. 3rd Sunday of Lent John 2:13-25. The Cleansing of the Temple
Just before the Jewish Passover Jesus went up to Jerusalem, and in the Temple he found people selling cattle
and sheep and pigeons, and the money changers sitting at their counters there. Making a whip out of some
cord, he drove them all out of the Temple, cattle and sheep as well, scattered the money changers' coins,
knocked their tables over and said to the pigeon-sellers, 'Take all this out of here and stop turning my Father's
house into a market'. Then his disciples remembered the words of scripture: Zeal for your house will devour
me. The Jews intervened and said, 'What sign can you show us to justify what you have done?' Jesus answered,
'Destroy this sanctuary, and in three days I will raise it up'. The Jews replied, 'It has taken forty-six years to
build this sanctuary: are you going to raise it up in three days?' But he was speaking of the sanctuary that was
his body, and when Jesus rose from the dead, his disciples remembered that he had said this, and they believed
the scripture and the words he had said.
During his stay in Jerusalem for the Passover many believed in his name when they saw the signs that he gave,
but Jesus knew them all and did not trust himself to them; he never needed evidence about any man; he could
tell what a man had in him. Copyright…1966, 1967 & 1968 by Darton, Longman & Todd, & Doubleday & Co. Inc. and used by permission
1. Spend some time quietly reading and rereading the passage, noting the words/phrases that draw your attention.
2. Notice all that Jesus said and did…notice how different people reacted…and how Jesus responded to them…
3. What does the story tell you – about Jesus? - about discipleship?
4. The body of Christ …human beings ‘temples’ of Christ…Take time in prayer to reflect on the people to whom you
show most/least respect…the way you reverence the presence of Christ in others…
For Conversation:
The ways you/your community work for justice for the downtrodden.

ST PETER'S JUSTICE AND PEACE LENTEN PROJECT:
Laptops for schools - We have had a really positive response to our request for old laptops that can be sent into schools for children to use, but we would like to give the schools as many as possible, so please keep them coming. If you can, please deliver to Carmel O'Malley at 11, Aldwyn Crescent, Hazel Grove SK7 5HY - she has made space in her porch for a Covid safe drop off. If you would prefer, Carmel is happy to collect so please call her on 07747 145326 to arrange this. Supply of dried foods and tinned goods - Thank you for your kind generosity - we have had a fantastic re-sponse to our appeal and have already delivered food to the three primary schools. We intend to keep the appeal open and will deliver more food to the schools but in case there is a surplus, we will distribute food to the Hazel Grove Foodbank or the Wellspring. The green bin is in the porch next to the Piety Stall and is clearly labelled DRIED FOOD FOR SCHOOLS. We continue to ask for food that parents can use to make a nutritious meal or snack for children, so dried food without expiry dates, such as tinned meat/fish, cereal, beans/pulses, pasta, tea/coffee, long life milk, sugar etc. Please continue to pray for our schools: Our schools are a really big part of our church family and have remained open for teaching the most vulner-able students and the children of key workers throughout lockdown. Please hold our teachers, the support staff and the whole school community in your prayers: Thank You, Father, for technology allowing many students to continue their educations online. For virtual classrooms and technological resources. Thank You for every teacher and student adjusting to their new normal. Comfort teachers and support staff as they miss interacting with their students in person. Equip them with energy and inspiration to come alongside their students in this challenging time of crisis. Protect their health, Father, both physically and mentally. Encourage them to use their gifts and talents to find new ways to reach students.

would also be useful but not essential)
We will provide: simple instructions, the materials needed to make the cards (card blanks, toppers, glue
stick if needed).

Stage 2 will be the main purpose of the project i.e. making Christmas cards for 2021, to be distributed in
the Parish, using recycled images from 2020. We will need 800+ if we are to achieve our aim!
Can you help?
If you are interested please contact Mary on [email protected] with your name, address and
telephone number, or you can leave a message for us on the church number.
FROM FR PETER
Another week gone and another week nearer liberation from lockdown! It is good to see the infection and
death rates going down so our lockdown has not been wasted. This week too sees the full time resump-
tion of the opening of our schools which will be a great relief to parents, if not children and teachers. My
youngest nephew and his good lady celebrated the birth of their first baby on Tuesday—a hefty 8lbs+
born on the same date has her great great
grandmother but some 132 years apart.
The rest of the family took a glass or two
to celebrate. Needless to say we have only
seen photographs up to now but we look
forward to seeing the real one in person.
I also took part in the Diocesan Youth Ser-
vice Lenten Service on Wednesday eve-
ning. It was live from our front garden and
it was bitterly cold but fortunately part of
the service was the lighting of a fire which
helped to keep the circulation going.
United and Crystal Palace was hardly
something to warm us up afterwards. If
you have nothing better to do you can
watch a recording on the SYMT channel
of You Tube (That is the service not
United and Palace!)
Next Sunday, March 14th, sees the reintro-
duction of the 8 30 am Mass. Our atten-
dances have been going up steadily in re-
cent weeks so much so that last week we
had to turn some people way who came hoping to get in but had not booked.. Some weeks at 10 00 a.m.
we have been very close to our legal capacity so the 8 30 Mass will give us an extra 38 ‘spots’. Please
remember to book in for the weekend Masses and if you have booked and then find you cannot come
please let us know so that where possible we can give the place to someone else.
Have a good week
Fr Peter

The past twelve months have been an exceptionally difficult time for all of us. We can only hope that the cur-rent vaccine rollout will eventually provide some relief. May the coming Novena to St. Joseph, in this Year dedicated to him by Pope Francis, be a source of comfort and support to all who have lost loved ones and whose lives have been adversely affected by this pandemic
NEW BEGINNINGS - A JOURNEY FROM LENT TO EASTER For the past few years I’ve produced a Lent reflection leaflet continuing a format started by Bryan Halson during our time to-gether on the former Shrewsbury Diocesan Justice and Peace Commission. This year Lent takes on a new meaning for me fol-lowing the death from natural causes of my beloved elder daughter Annie in June 2020. For Advent 2020 I put together a se-ries of weekly reflections based on her writings as a scripture scholar, teacher and evangelist. For Lent this year I am sharing some more of her material as we journey through Lent towards Easter. I’ve been looking at C S Lewis’ classic The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe whilst helping home-school our 9 year-old grand-daughter during the latest lockdown. It seems apposite in the current situation to identify with a bleak land where it is ‘always winter but never Christmas.’ At present it feels as though we are existing in a continual season of Lent, an enforced time of fasting and abstinence from so many of the ordinary pleasures we take for granted: visiting family and friends or new places, going to a film or out for a meal, enjoying a day out to the coast or the countryside. We wait, sometimes with impatience, for the time to move forward to Easter and the joy of the Resurrection. We are locked in a period of stasis, of stagnation. There is frustration and fear. Will our lives ever be the same again? But we can choose to embrace this enforced isolation as an oppor-tunity to quieten ourselves, to truly listen to God and discern a new way forward. We can use this time wisely to consider changes to our lifestyle that will help conserve the fast-diminishing natural resources of our planet, to live more simply and to work for the good of all. This is an opportunity to focus on what really matters and to journey in faith and hope.
Anne O’Connor Sunday, March 7 Lent 3 You, Lord, have the message of eternal life. Ps 18: 8-11 ‘God watches over me every day.’ Monday, March 8 My soul is thirsting for God, the God of my life. When can I enter and see the face of God? Ps 41: 2-3, 42: 3-4 ‘As we sought the face of the Lord we were filled with light, joy, peace and love.’ Tuesday, March 9 Your Father will not forgive you unless you each forgive your brother from your heart. Mt 18: 21-35 ‘In prayer we contemplated God’s unconditional love for us and his willingness to reform us when we fail.’ Wednesday, March 10 O praise the Lord, Jerusalem! Ps 147: 12-13, 15-16 ‘In telling our own stories we were able to invite God into our lives anew and to recognise his powerful presence among us.’
Thursday, March 11 O that today you would listen to his voice! Harden not your hearts. Ps 92: 1-2, 6-9 ‘So often we hurry through life, rushing from one task to the next, barely pausing to reflect or listen to the voice of the Lord.’ Friday, March 12 Repent, says the Lord, for the kingdom of heaven is close at hand. Mk 12:28-34 ‘Sometimes my path is blocked and I cannot go the way I would choose.’ Saturday, March 13 What I want is love, not sacrifice. Hos 5:15 - 6:6 ‘I believe that true evangelisation is born of love and desire: a love for all people and a desire that they come to know the love of Christ and the blessings of living in his kingdom.’
