St Peter’s C of E Infant School-Physical Education and School Sport Funding 2018-2019

February 2019.

We aim to provide a high quality PE experience for our pupils in the initial years of their school life, thus laying down solid foundations for the future.

As well as progressing academically children also need to develop their ‘physical literacy’: the basic movement skills of agility, balance, and coordination.

Furthermore we know that children’s early participation in and enthusiasm for PE and school sport will lead to a future active and healthy lifestyle.

Each year the school chooses a focus for this funding based on analysis from the previous year and the School Development Plan so we can specifically

support an identified pupil cohort. This year as a school we are looking at how, through our provision, we can enhance and increase team building sports

skills as well as looking at the individual, personal development of all our children. Our motto for the year is “Let’s work together”.

In the academic year 2018-2019 St Peter’s School will receive £16900 in PE and School sport funding. The funding should be used to ‘generate sustainable

improvements which enhance, rather than maintain, existing provision’. This means that the school should use the premium to:

•develop or add to the PE and sport activities that the school already offers

•make improvements now that will benefit pupils joining the school in future years

To date money from this allocation has been committed to purchasing the following:

To fund membership of the Tandridge Schools Sport Partnership which provides:

Access to quality assured training and professional development for school staff.

Participation in locally organised and age appropriate festivals and competitions.

Links with local secondary school PE teachers for specialist PE and sport advice.

To fund in-house staff development and ensure a lasting legacy of good quality provision within the school:

For staff to lead training for other teachers to increase subject knowledge and confidence in delivery of teaching skills such as Val Sabin ‘Activate’.

To employ high quality qualified sports coaches to extend and enrich the PE curriculum. These will:

Work alongside teachers and teaching assistants, increasing their confidence and subject knowledge.

Increase pupil’s engagement and enjoyment of sports they may otherwise not access. For example, Boxing, Bunny Hop, Yoga and track and field

events such as javelin and shotput. This year sports have been chosen to specifically promote physical and emotional well-being as well as personal

awareness. Children will have a life-long love of, and understanding for fitness.

Enable us to form new partnerships with community sports clubs.

To purchase equipment:

Storage facilities for PE and sporting equipment, Pedometers/Fitbits, cycle/scooter racks.

To organise outdoor learning experiences:

To provide a safety area (rubber matting) around equipment in our outdoor areas.

To purchase and install:

A running/cycle track around the school field.

The school’s aim is to ring-fence as much money from the grant to achieve the above aim. See report below for the impact this will have.

Rationale for ‘Let’s Work Together’.

The skills learned from team building are important parts of personal and group development in children. During team building activities, children have the

chance to communicate with each other and work towards a common goal. By practicing being an effective team member and team leader, children

develop confidence in their own abilities.

“The art of communication is the language of leadership.”— James Humes

Working as a team

Team building with children means you are developing their ability to work together toward a common goal. This makes the work or job easier because the

children are working together. When a team works together to solve a challenge, everyone in the group wins and all children have a positive experience.

Conduct team building activities with children that emphasize cooperation and collaboration, not competition. The skills learned from being part of a team

are necessary for positive action in everyday life in school, work, and the community.

Conducting team building activities with children can help children work on developing the following skills:

•Problem solving, Communication, Cooperation, Listening, Self-esteem, Idea exchange, Working with others and different groups, Leadership and Creative thinking Final End of Year Attainment for KS1 2017-2018

Class Meeting the expected standards in Physical Education.

Areas for further development/Objectives to be included for 2018-2019 as identified this year by class teachers and coaches through observations and pupil talk.

Year 1 100% expected or greater depth Team activities - so pupils learn about responsibility as they recognise the vital roles they play on their team. Leadership isn’t always about who is the best or on top; quiet leadership is about being accountable for your actions and being a role model for sportsmanship. Team sports put pupils in many social situations where they need to express themselves. Because team sports promote teamwork and foster relationships, children also become better at communicating. And because sports also instil self-esteem, children not only communicate better but they do so with confidence.

Year 2 93% expected or greater depth Boys – dance, movement, and gymnastics: They sometimes find it uncomfortable with the concept of these areas. To look at how we can stop it being ‘stereotypical’ and appeal to all pupils regardless of gender, with activities such as dance and “more” drumming [pupil talk] the use of outside dance companies – participation and performances, use of music. This will also support School Development priorities to make sure the school is offering a very creative and inclusive curriculum for all types of learners.

ACTIONS/RATIONALE IMPACT FUTURE SUSTAINABILITY

Sports funding use: Aims and specific intended outcomes: How will this action improve achievement for pupils eligible for the Sports Funding? What will it achieve if successful?

The full impact of Sports Funding will be determined at the end of academic year

How will the development of sports activities and improvements be sustained in the future?

Training for staff to understand the specific individual needs of pupils through PE and sporting opportunities as required. To provide staff with teaching resources to help them teach PE and sport. INSET training and CPD. In house training: £1000

This will allow staff to gain further confidence and understanding of specific PE and sports programmes and values, and up-date knowledge that will have an impact on the physical and emotional well-being of pupils. The training will inform decisions on future provision in the school and with other local schools or organisations that can be used to impact on a child’s physical attainment and emotional development over time and in the future.

Training has been booked through the year.

By supporting groups or individuals and working closely with the sports coach, staff will have a much clearer understanding of techniques and strategies they can use to develop specific skills further for pupils with identified needs. They will be able to plan and implement their own teaching and learning opportunities, including differentiation, which are specific and purposeful. Resources used by the coaches will be audited so the school can adapt their own or purchase as necessary.

High quality Specialist Sports coaches: We are able to employ specialist coaches from local sports clubs within our area. Recording devices: ipads/video camera to link to IWB for CPD and pupil assessment. Coaching to be undertaken include: Tag Rugby £440 Hockey £ 440 Netball £ 440 Springs Dance Company £1620

The aim here is to increase pupil’s engagement and enjoyment of sports they may not otherwise access. There is a consistency in children’s experience of physical activity throughout the school. All children regardless of background or family financial situations will be able to access a range of physical activity experiences. It will also increase participation of pupils with identified SEND in physical activity. This year sports have been chosen to specifically increase team building skills. Children who are less confident in their own abilities will see that they can thrive in a safe sporting environment that encourages team work, risk taking, and social co-operation. There will be an emphasis on self-awareness, self-confidence, and social interaction through safe but stimulating team activities. To increase pupils enjoyment of dance and different cultures by offering new experiences through a variety of workshops. By introducing dance workshops we believe this will

Year 1 Hockey questionnaire October 2018.

Pupil comments show they are working as a team and thoroughly enjoy playing team matches where they work together. Other comments about what they found enjoyable include: dribbling the ball and passing to others. 75% of the class said they would like to continue with this sport outside of school. Less confident pupils in the area of PE were also noted to have become more confident in themselves during the sessions and less apprehensive about sports.

Year 2 Hockey questionnaire October 2018. Year 2 comments include: enjoyment of playing with others, hockey being exciting and fun. The majority of children stated that they enjoyed playing matches.

Observations of specialist coaches will enable teachers to introduce techniques into their own teaching and enhance learning opportunities for pupils. These may be recorded so resources and activities can be used in future sessions led by school staff. Sporting skills developed though the lessons will be applied in other areas such as the school’s sports day. Through pupil voice increase the range of activities on offer and therefore encourage more pupils to participate in out of school sporting activities.

open up opportunities for pupils to develop both physical and cultural experiences, thus promoting SMSC development. Many children, especially boys are either not comfortable/confident when participating in dance activities or have not had this opportunity. This will increase individual’s body awareness of movement, concentration and spatial awareness. By extending the sports premium to cross curricular activities in this way it will allow both a broadening of PE experiences and a development of academic knowledge and skills through multicultural and diversity understanding.

Tag Rugby: Key stage 1 pupils learnt the skills for tag rugby in the 2nd half of the autumn term. From teacher observations it was clear that 100% of children regardless of ability/SEND were able to access the sport and participate fully in the sessions. They learnt basic running, passing skills, spatial awareness and team work. These sessions also helped to establish and reinforce confidence and self-esteem, it improved decision making and cooperative skills through fair play. All seen through teacher observations.

*4 children do rugby outside of school ** Some children knew how to play rugby from outside of school. Additional pupil talk: “I like it because it makes me feel like I get to work with others more often.” “The coach is a really good teacher and makes us learn skills in a fun way.” “She gives us games to make us fit!” Netball: Pupils reported that this felt like it increased their physical fitness. Boys said that they thought it would help with their skills development for rugby and basketball “because of having to catch the ball and shoot carefully”. Area for development from 2017-2018 Team activities - so pupils learn about responsibility as they recognise the vital roles they play on their team. √

Maths, Movement and Memory Research Project: In collaboration with schools within the Tandridge Teaching Partnership group. Anticipated total spend: £200 – participation £280 – cover costs to end of December 2018

To use movement to increase accuracy and fluency of recall of number facts relating to number bonds and times tables To use movement and music, repetition and rehearsal to support children in acquiring and retaining number facts To increase teacher confidence in using dance and music techniques to underpin maths learning

Having attended an initial workshop (creating movements to represent numbers 0-9) staff are using techniques within their lessons. Pupils are reporting that they enjoy these movement sessions and information is being retained due to the short but frequent sessions. Video recordings of pupils within these sessions show they are enjoying the lessons, sustaining concentration, recreating the movements and recalling numbers. Through the course of the term it was apparent however that this programme is a research study and not wholly suited to our pupils. The school has made the decision to use the first term as a trial period and cease involvement for the rest of the year.

Teachers will have the opportunity to disseminate this project to other staff within the school. They will be able to collaborate with other participating schools to pool resources and draw on the expertise and experiences of others. By participating in this project the school

predicts that enthusiasm for movement and maths will increase considerably and can be rolled out to all classes in the future.

Sporting equipment within the school setting: Storage facilities for PE and sporting equipment. Pedometers/Fitbits Anticipated total spend: £2000 Active Maths Rugs £560 Scooter/bike racks Tag balls £20

We aim to provide high quality sports equipment for our pupils to use within directed lesson and pupil’s independent time. This will encourage both respect for equipment and self-initiated sporting opportunities, thus independence. Children will be able to access and choose equipment during break times for personal challenge and skills development. We will offer weekly sports challenges to promote fun and enjoyment of fitness, using the equipment previously purchased; which staff can also participate in. These will be competitive challenges that will empower pupils through physical but fun activity. A new physical challenge will be introduced weekly by the HT or ST, such as a walking challenge with pedometers to heighten pupils’ awareness of the benefits of walking, in a friendly competitive manner. Pupils will be encouraged to practise the challenge throughout the week within the lunchtime period. A

Balls and associated equipment for Tag Rugby have been purchased. These have been used for sessions with the children as reported above and proved to be very successful and enjoyable for the classes. The tag belts for example, have been very useful for pupils whose gross motor skills need developing having been able to use these successfully and be fully involved in the coaching and subsequent games played. Further storage facilities will be purchased for PE equipment once the current building works at the school are completed.

Through the provision of Weekly Sports challenges we will enhance pupil’s experiences of different sporting activities. We will encourage and develop healthy and safe routines that can be sustained outside of the school environment independently now and in the future. The school will be well resourced for all pupils in the future including those with a special aptitude for sports or those whose physical skills need to be developed further. Action: to record % of pupils who participate in sports based activities at playtimes for comparative data analysis. Action for 2018-2019 SDP and Healthy Schools Status award.

star pupil from each class will be awarded a challenge certificate at the end of the week. Points will then be added to the pupil’s ‘house’. This will further encourage healthy competition between the year groups and team houses. A ‘Sports Crew’ will embed this further, oversee, and set up these activities. By doing this we hope to encourage independence, personal organisation (ownership) and for these pupils a greater vocabulary range as they develop their speaking skills when explaining and giving instructions.

Improvement of current playground markings Anticipated total spend: £2000 Sports field markings for sports day: £TBC

To improve and repaint the playground markings following on from building works made to the school which have deteriorated due to these works. Playground markings are one of the best ways to encourage active children. Dedicated space can be given to painted tennis, volleyball or basketball courts, as well as small-scale football pitches. Children of all ages can use these to engage in meaningful play. Giving children the tools to participate in physical activities

These will be considered after the school has completed a period of building works. Due to be completed by April 2019.

The playground is an extension of the classroom and is a place where early social learning takes place. Aside from traditional sporting markings, designs such as; painted mazes, maps, life-size board games, dart board targets and A to Z throwing targets will give children plenty of opportunity to work and learn together. Games like these combine interaction with

is a great way to nurture crucial personal and social skills too. Sport has always been a great method of instilling lessons about teamwork, resilience, and communication, and playground markings are one of the most effective ways to nurture this away from the timetabled sports hall or school gymnasium settings.

precise action and can become a staple of a child’s break time fun for years to come.

Participation in locally organised and age-appropriate festivals and competitions such as ‘Multi skills’: Anticipated total spend: costs for festival and cover: £840 Transport to events: £75 x 3 sessions = £225

To continue to work with a cluster of schools to provide support for PE and inter school sports events. This will provide challenge and promote skills for confidence and success by offering opportunities to all children, regardless of ability to participate in competitions against peers from other schools. This in turn will promote SMSC development.

Year 2 pupils successfully participated in a Multi-skills festival at Limpsfield school in November, coming 4th out of 10 schools who took part.

The children displayed excellent concentration and behaviours. They joined in all activities showing great team spirit and socialised extremely well with children from other local participating schools.

Local schools will be able to continue the work developed to date and provide opportunities for these events to continue, in the knowledge that staff have the necessary training and skills to sustain the work undertaken so far. Equipment will be available as it has previously been purchased and knowledge of how audits are undertaken will have been completed and monitored so this work will be able to confidently continue for future pupils of the schools.

Bikeabality/cycle skills: Pedals training: £150 x 2 year groups: £300.

The course is aimed at developing balance and control whilst riding a bike. It will allow children to master the art of

Pedals training booked for April and May 2019. Pupil’s awareness of road safety will increase; which is an area highlighted by the school as a localised

balance in a safe environment. The training enables children to become more aware of the space around them as well as develop observational skills. It helps to develop self-confidence, risk assessment and self-esteem, as well as being an excellent way for children to keep fit as well as respect the environment around them. It links ‘Road Safety week’ as well as to our ‘Golden Boot’ challenge later in the year when children are asked to travel to school using means of transport other than cars. It is hoped that from this training many more of our children will be able to cycle or scooter to school with their parents having developed the necessary cycling and road safety awareness skills.

risk in our area and as such is referenced in our safeguarding and child protection policy. This session will provide pupils with the skills to develop a safer and therefore healthy life style which can be sustained through their lives. More children will travel to school by healthy means by cycling or by scooter.

Purchase and installation of a running/cycle track around the school playing field. Purchase and installation of matting around specific sporting areas. Quotes are being obtained.

By installing a cycle/running track pupils and staff will have the opportunity to run/cycle daily before and after school as well as use it to further enhance PE lessons. It may also be used for track events on Sports Day, for example. In this way cycle skills can be practised (in line with government aspirations that all children have the opportunity to learn to ride a bike) and pupils, parents and

Quotes are being gathered for the coming year. Future pupils and staff will have the opportunity to use this track/matting at any given time and in all weathers.

Enrichment activities Nower Wood £300 Transportation £295

Enrichment activities have been chosen as they broadens horizons, develops new skills and contributes to students' personal and social development.

Pupils worked very well together. They further developed their speaking and team building skills as they guided their blindfolded partners around obstacles or used a guide rope. They reported that they established deeper trust in one another as they had to rely on them for support and guidance.

Confident learners who will be able to make links and apply their learning to different life skills as they leave school and are placed in different social as well as physical, emotional situations. Techniques that can be used in teacher’s own teaching of movement and music.

*This is based on 6 sessions half termly.

Revised anticipated spend to date: £9520

Further initiatives being considered include:

‘Kidz Fit’ – workshops offered to compliment the PE, PSHE, and Science curriculum.

‘Healthy week’ – establishing a healthy week to promote active, healthy lifestyles. Focus on the hot topic of obesity – improving pupil’s health and

wellbeing by changing how diet is looked at and how exercise is planned? This week may include: A fitness day including a before school exercise

activity for pupils, staff and parents and cookery sessions to promote healthy lifestyles and aerobic activity. Level sports playing field.

SDP 2018-2019 – as part of Healthy School’s Status.
