Welcome We extend to you and your family a very warm welcome to the St Peter’s Netball Club Inc. Netball is a fantastic sport to play, watch, coach or umpire and we welcome any input or experience you may have. We would like to encourage a hands-on approach to netball and hope you may be able to fulfill an active role whilst being a member of our club.

History St Peter’s Netball Club was originally started to provide an outlet for St Peter’s Catholic Primary School and Parish members wishing to play netball as their sport on the weekends. Many years later, the club has grown to become an integral part of the school and its community.

It provides a wonderful avenue to meet new people, especially for newcomers to the school. There exists an ideal opportunity to make new friends and find common areas of interest through sport and social interaction.

We are proud of the club and its achievements and we remain an active part of the Parish and School community by supporting the school in the school’s netball competitions.

As from 2011, we have a club website that has all the information you require. The school newsletter often provides information, so please look out for these.

UPNA Underwood Park Netball Association organises a fantastic, competitive netball competition and aims to encourage and promote the participation and enjoyment of netball. St Peter’s Netball Club are currently affiliated with UPNA and participate in the Saturday afternoon netball games which are played at Underwood Park, Underwood Rd, Rochedale.

UPNA are responsible for setting policy, competition rulings and by laws in conjunction with Netball Queensland guidelines. The primary members of the Association are derived from representatives of the individual clubs, which participate in the Saturday competition.

It is in the best interest of St. Peter’s Netball Club to ensure we have representatives elected onto the UPNA Committee at their AGM. For full details on UPNA’s policies please have a look at their website listed below.

Seasons UPNA’s primary competition runs on Saturdays between 12:30pm and 4:45pm. They currently have around 500 junior netballers in approximately 50+ teams taking the court each Saturday. There is one day season each year; commencing in March and ending in September. Games are played on outdoor courts and standard games consist of 4, fifteen minute quarters. If there is enough interest, a short, Summer season is considered. UPNA also runs a night season for adults on Wednesday evenings.

Net Set Go Net Set GO! is Netball Australia’s Junior Netball Program. It has been developed to provide children from the age of 5 to 10 years with the best possible learning and playing experience that enables them to develop a positive introduction to Netball. This then ensures enjoyment and continued participation within the sport. It incorporates the modified junior program FunNet in a fun and safe atmosphere.

Under 5 - Under 7 (FUNNET)

Participants must turn 5 prior to 31st December in each year.

Registration for FUNNET is through UPNA.

The program incorporates skill activities and minor games. It will be coordinated by an UPNA representative to ensure a quality experience for all participants.

Activities are aimed at learning and developing movement (run, jump etc.); hand eye coordination (catch, throw); and coordination (balance, spatial awareness etc.).

The program focuses on the development of motor skills and confidence through fun and structured games.

Participation is in a safe learning environment.

It assists in the reduction of social health issues, such as childhood obesity, through physically active involvement.

The program is fun for all participants, regardless of ability.

It leads to increased junior participation and lifelong involvement in an active lifestyle

Under 8 - Under 9 (NETTA – Modified Games)

Participants must turn at 8 or 9 prior to 31st December in each year.

Registration for joining our club in a Netta team is necessary for this level of netball.

Teams are selected by St Peter’s Netball Club to play modified matches against other club’s teams. Teams are coached and managed by St Peter’s Netball Club’s volunteers. Please feel free to put your hand up!

Children play all positions on a rotational basis. This gives them experience, opportunity and skill development in all areas.

No scoring is permitted. This is to encourage the children to focus on developing their skills – NOT winning the game.

This program is run throughout UPNA’s Saturday Day Fixtures season and is also held at Underwood Park.

UPNA’s competitive fixture culminates in a final series in September.

This program is run throughout UPNA’s Saturday Day Fixtures (U11 - U15/16) and Wednesday Night Fixtures (U16+) season and is also held at Underwood Park.

Representative Teams Representative teams are selected from U12 through to Opens. To be eligible to trial for the UPNA Representative Teams, all players must play with the Underwood Park Netball Association.

All selected players will need to attend scheduled training sessions and be available to play at the scheduled times.

Registration Registration forms are available from the St Peter’s Netball Club website or by contacting one of our Management Committee members. St Peter’s Netball Club also has a Sign On Day prior to each season. This usually occurs in February, full details about dates/times are on our website. These forms must be completed and forwarded as soon as possible to the club treasurer, together with the payment of registration fees in order to be eligible for team selection for the next season. Registration is current when the club receives all forms and payment. Players are not covered by insurance until payment is received.

Fee Schedule A nominated fee is collected by the club. This pays for QNA’s (Queensland Netball Association) registration, public liability insurance, Underwood Park Netball Association’s registration, fixture umpiring and equipment.

Other additional costs may include uniforms and carnivals.

Team Selection Criteria 1. Players are selected according to ability, skill and age. The teams are

selected by the Management Committee with recommendations from coaches if needed. The Management Committee has the last say on team selection.

Page 7: St Peter’s Netball Clubstpetersnetball.weebly.com/uploads/7/0/8/7/7087431/... · Welcome We extend to you and your family a very warm welcome to the St Peter’s Netball lub Inc

2. A team is selected with a view to being graded by UPNA in its own cadetship, preferably not against another St Peter’s team.

3. Special needs requests can be made in writing to the Management Committee and where possible will be accommodated.

4. The maximum number of players per team is 10.

5. Only financial players will be available for selection unless the treasurer advises the Management Committee otherwise.

6. Eligible and able players will be played up out of their age group (if necessary) to extend and develop their abilities at the discretion of the Management Committee.

7. No preference is given to one player over another when it comes to selection except where particular playing positions are required.

8. New players joining the club will only fill available positions in the teams regardless of ability. No preference will be given to new members until they have played at least one full season.

9. We will actively encourage players to develop their talents through playing Representative netball and taking development opportunities.

10. It is expected that teams will be required to train at least once per week to develop skills. Times will be organised in liaison with the team coach.

11. All teams will have a coach and ideally, a team manager for Saturday games.

Team Manager The role of team manager is usually given to a parent from the team on a voluntary basis. If you find you are able to commit to the season, please nominate this on your registration form.

The duties of a team manager are:

Typically a roster is made up (by manager) to ensure bibs are washed and returned on training day.

Collecting the score sheet from the office prior to each Saturday’s game and correctly filling in the names of your team players.

If a new or alternate player from another team is listed on your score sheet, their details must be written in the appropriate place on the sheet. Failure to note this information will result in penalty points being deducted from the team records for using an illegal player.

Page 8: St Peter’s Netball Clubstpetersnetball.weebly.com/uploads/7/0/8/7/7087431/... · Welcome We extend to you and your family a very warm welcome to the St Peter’s Netball lub Inc

Remember, UPNA has a ruling. That once a player has played with another team 3 times, they must stay in that team. The Association keeps a record of this so we must make sure this is avoided, as players owe allegiance to their own teams.

Scoring or if absent, organising a scorer.

Supporting the team coach and players.

Liaison with the General Committee, usually the secretary.

Distributing all handout information to team members.

Collect email addresses to be able to pass on relevant information to your team via email. Keep the secretary updated with change of details (particularly email address) for any team members.

Organise communications and assistance for social events and presentation day.

Organise assistance (usually a roster) for UPNA Club Duties and St Peter’s Netball Club fundraising days.

Liaise with coach, netball associations and team members about carnivals, registrations etc.

Organise a gift for the coach at the end of the season.

Individual teams may choose to run a “fruit” roster.

Uniforms & Equipment Each player must pay for their own uniform which is usually arranged at Sign On Day. If a new uniform is needed an order is placed and the uniform is made to order. St Peter’s Netball Club has recently started a second-hand uniform register, which we are hoping will help keep costs to a minimum. Please refer to our website or contact the uniform officer for more information.

Please bring a drink bottle to each training session and game. Adopt the sun smart policy and apply sunscreen. Hair should be tied back and no jewellery is to be worn on court. Nails need to be cut short and will be checked by the umpire prior to play.

For players with medical conditions it is the responsibility of the parents and players to ensure required medication is available at training and courtside during a game.

Netball bibs, balls, training equipment, first aid kit etc will be provided by St Peter’s Netball Club. It is up to the team manager and coach to decide who takes responsibility for these items.

Code of Conduct

For Management & General Committee

Management Committee to have a current Blue Card.

Give all young people equal opportunities to participate.

Create pathways for young people to participate in sport, not just as a player but as a coach, umpire, administrator, etc.

Ensure appropriate liaison with UPNA regarding rules, equipment, length of games and training schedules to suit the age, ability and maturity level of young players.

Provide quality supervision and instruction for junior players.

Remember that young people participate for their enjoyment and benefit. Do not over emphasise awards.

Help coaches and officials highlight appropriate behaviour and skill development, and help improve the standards of coaching and officiating.

Ensure that everyone involved in junior sport emphasises fair play, rather than winning at all costs.

Give a code of conduct sheet to spectators, officials, parents, coaches, players and the media, and encourage them to follow it.

Remember, you set an example. Your behaviour and comments should be positive and supportive.

Support implementation of the National Junior Sport Policy.

Make it clear that abusing young people in any way is unacceptable and will result in disciplinary action.

Respect the rights, dignity and worth of every young person regardless of their gender, ability, cultural background or religion.

For Coaches:

To have a current Blue Card.

Remember that young people participate for pleasure, and winning is only part of the fun.

Never ridicule or yell at a young player for making a mistake or not coming first.

Page 10: St Peter’s Netball Clubstpetersnetball.weebly.com/uploads/7/0/8/7/7087431/... · Welcome We extend to you and your family a very warm welcome to the St Peter’s Netball lub Inc

Be reasonable in your demands on players’ time, energy and enthusiasm.

Operate within the rules and spirit of your sport and teach your players to do the same.

Ensure that the time players spend with you is a positive experience. All young people are deserving of equal attention and opportunities.

Avoid overplaying the talented players; the ‘just average’ need and deserve equal time.

Ensure that equipment and facilities meet safety standards and are appropriate to the age and ability of all players.

Display control, respect and professionalism to all involved with the sport. This includes opponents, coaches, officials, administrators, the media, parents and spectators. Encourage players to do the same.

Show concern and caution towards sick and injured players. Follow the advice of a physician when determining whether an injured player is ready to recommence training or competition.

Obtain appropriate qualifications and keep up to date with the latest coaching practices and the principles of growth and development of young people.

Any physical contact with a young person should be appropriate to the situation and necessary for the player’s skill development.

Respect the rights, dignity and worth of every young person regardless of their gender, ability, cultural background or religion.

For Players:

All netballers have a responsibility to practice good sporting behaviour.

Play by the rules.

Never argue with an official. If you disagree, have your captain, coach or manager approach the official during a break or after the competition.

Control your temper. Verbal abuse of officials, sledging other players or deliberately distracting or provoking an opponent is not acceptable or permitted behaviours in any sport.

Work equally hard for yourself and/or your team. Your team’s performance will benefit and so will you.

Be a good sport. Applaud all good plays whether they are made by your team or the opposition.

Page 11: St Peter’s Netball Clubstpetersnetball.weebly.com/uploads/7/0/8/7/7087431/... · Welcome We extend to you and your family a very warm welcome to the St Peter’s Netball lub Inc

Treat all participants in your sport, as you like to be treated. Do not bully or take unfair advantage of another competitor.

Cooperate with your coach, teammates and opponents. Without them, there would be no competition.

Participate for your own enjoyment and benefit, not just to please your parents and coaches.

Respect the rights, dignity and worth of all participants regardless of their gender, ability, cultural background or religion

For Spectators

Children play organised sport for fun. They are not playing for the entertainment of spectators only, nor are they miniature professionals.

Remember that young people participate in sport for their enjoyment and benefit, not yours.

Applaud good performances and efforts from all individuals and teams.

Congratulate all participants on their performance, regardless of the game’s outcome.

Respect the decisions of officials and teach young people to do the same.

Never ridicule or scold a young player for making a mistake. Positive comments are motivational.

Condemn the use of violence in any form, whether it is by spectators, coaches, officials or players.

Show respect for your team’s opponents. Without them, there would be no game.

Encourage players to follow the rules and the officials’ decisions.

Do not use foul language, sledge or harass players, coaches or officials.

Respect the rights, dignity and worth of every young person regardless of their gender, ability, cultural background or religion.

For Parents

Ensure your child/ren attends all fixtures and training sessions during the season. Failure to do this without reasonable grounds (eg. illness) may result in reduced court time and/or player ineligibility for Finals and Team Awards.

There are a number of events over the season that St Peter’s Netball Club Inc

Page 12: St Peter’s Netball Clubstpetersnetball.weebly.com/uploads/7/0/8/7/7087431/... · Welcome We extend to you and your family a very warm welcome to the St Peter’s Netball lub Inc

expects players to attend. Examples of this include but are not limited to UPNA Club Carnival, Netta Breakup, Club Trophy Day. Dates of these events are available on the Club website.

Monetary rewards for ‘goal’ scoring is not an acceptable practice within the ethos of St Peter’s Netball Club.

Do not approach coaches during a game. It is best that general concerns are expressed to your team manager who will pass on to your coach.

Remember that children participate in sport for their enjoyment, not yours.

Encourage children to participate, do not force them.

Focus on your child’s efforts and performance rather than whether they win or lose.

Encourage children to play according to the rules and to settle disagreements without resorting to hostility or violence.

Never ridicule or yell at a child for making a mistake or losing a competition.

Remember that children learn best by example.

Appreciate good performance and skillful plays by all participants.

Support all efforts to remove verbal and physical abuse from sporting activities.

Respect officials’ decisions and teach children to do likewise.

Show appreciation for volunteer coaches, officials and administrators. Without them, your child could not participate.

Respect the rights, dignity and worth of every young person regardless of their gender, ability, cultural background or religion.

Breach of Code of Conduct The Management Committee will assess any breaches of the Code of Conduct and will take appropriate action which may involve being asked to leave the Club. UPNA fully supports the club’s Code of Conduct and may take action to prevent participation in associated activities.

Training Players will be required to commit to training sessions organised by the team coach, as this is very important to the success of the team. The training sessions are usually held at Underwood Park courts on a Tuesday afternoon. (You will

Page 13: St Peter’s Netball Clubstpetersnetball.weebly.com/uploads/7/0/8/7/7087431/... · Welcome We extend to you and your family a very warm welcome to the St Peter’s Netball lub Inc

receive clarification on specific times before the season begins). Failure to comply, without a reasonable excuse or phone call, may result in loss of court time during the Saturday game. Good behaviour is essential at training to ensure all team members benefit equally and work to the best of their ability to develop new skills. Any disruptive or disrespectful behaviour during training sessions will also result in players remaining on the sideline. Coaches volunteer their time and resources and deserve full support and respect by all club members. Their hard work and dedication should be appreciated.

Parental Support The club is always seeking interested people to support their child’s sport in whatever way they can. The future of this netball club is in your hands.

Please recognise the value and importance of all volunteer help whether it is in the capacity as a coach, umpire, committee member, team manager or scorer.

As a parent of a participating netballer, you will be expected to wash bibs on a roster basis.

St Peter’s Netball Club may hold a stall at St Peter’s School Bi-Annual Fete which would involve parental participation.

For the ongoing success of the St Peter’s Netball Club it is vital that new members are introduced on to the General or Management Committee. Please attend the AGM.

For the ongoing success of St Peter’s relationship with UPNA it is essential that some members of St Peter’s Netball Club volunteer to join the UPNA Committee.

Interested parents must also be recruited to help with coaching and umpiring. Please tell a General Committee Member or your Team Manager if you are willing to help, don’t leave it to somebody else!! Remember this is an ideal opportunity to give back to the club, support your children in their netball and make new friendships.

Official Complaints Should the need arise to voice an official complaint or to object about the inappropriate behaviour of a club member, the correct procedure is to advise preferably the Team Manager or the Club Secretary in writing who will liaise with the Management Committee. A reply will be forwarded as soon as possible.
