February is here, which begins with a couple signifi-
cantly “Catholic moments.” This Saturday (2/2) was
the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord, which is the
40th day after Christmas to coincide with the pre-
scribed day on which a devout Jewish couple would
bring their firstborn son to the temple in accordance
with the Law of Moses. Mary and Joseph did just
that. In Luke’s account of the event, we learn of Sim-
eon and Anna, who recognize Jesus as the long
awaited Messiah. Simeon cradles the Holy Child in
his arms and raises up a prayer of thanksgiving and
praise. In it, he refers to Christ as “a light to reveal
You (God) to the nations and the glory of Your peo-
ple, Israel.” Christ, the “Light to the nations.” This is
how the day came to be known as “Candlemas Day,”
because with that Scripture verse in mind, candles for
use in Church and home as symbolic of the “Light of
Christ” are traditionally blessed at Mass for the Feast
of the Presentation. That’s the reason why we have
the “Candlemas” cover on the bulletin today, with the
artist’s rendering of the Presentation of the Lord. And
because the Blessed Mother and St. Joseph consecrat-
ed Jesus in the temple, the Church observes this day
also as a World Day for Consecrated life remember-
ing our consecrated religious sisters and brothers.
We have another Catholic custom, developed in rela-
tion to Candlemas Day: blessing of throats the day
after (2/3) on the Memorial of St. Blaise. Any re-
search on St. Blaise (Armenian bishop and martyr of
the 4th century) will quickly yield the traditional story
of his healing a choking boy while on his way to exe-
cution. Connecting that story with the previous day’s
feast, we bless throats with blessed candles asking
God’s protection through the intercession of St. Blaise
“from every disease of the throat” and every other
evil. It’s a popular sacramental (to be distinguished
from a Sacrament) we will offer throat blessings
after Mass this weekend so that as many people who
wish to have their throat blessed may receive it.
Everyone including those who do not receive Holy
Communion (including children and nonCatholics)
may come forward to receive this blessing.

Q: Luke’s Gospel is the only one to mention the
Presentation of the Lord in the Temple. What is Luke
trying to communicate here and what connection does it
have with Mary?

A: February 2 is exactly forty days after December 25, the
nativity of Jesus. Jewish law (Ex 13:2, 12) dictated that
Jesus, as the firstborn, be consecrated to God. This was
done by the parents as they presented their Son in the Tem-
ple.

Jewish law further specified (Lv 12 : 28) that a mother was
ritually impure after giving birth, and that she had to wait a
set period of time (forty days for a boy) before she was to
offer a sacrifice to the Lord for purification.

The convergence of these two Jewish regulations occasions
Luke’s account of both the Presentation of the Lord and the
Purification of Mary. These days the liturgical emphasis is
more on the Presentation of Jesus. Luke highlights the role
of Simeon and Anna, two righteous Jews who recognized
Jesus as the longawaited Messiah and praised God for
being able to see and experience such a marvel in their life-
times.

Simeon’s prayer concerning the special role of Jesus is “ a
light for revelation to the Gentiles”. This phrase eventually
originated the custom of blessing candles on this day
which were to be used in the ceremonies, rituals, and pre-
cessions throughout the church year. Thus February 2nd is
also known as Candlemas Day. This day is indeed a rich
feast to be savored.
World Day for Consecrated Life.

The US conference of Catholic Bishops states that
World Day for Consecrated Life “is attached to the
Feast of the presentation of the Lord in February…
This Feast is also known as Candlemas day, the day
on which candles are blessed symbolizing Christ who
is the light of the world. So too, those in consecrated
life are called to reflect the light of Jesus Christ to all
peoples. Please support these dedicated seminarians
and sisters with your prayer.

By our bapsm we are all called to be in
relaonship with God and our fellow
Chrisans. As part of that relaonship we
are called to share the Good News of Je-
sus with others. Are you willing to talk about Jesus
with others? Are you willing to share your faith story
with your children? Do you read the Bible and share
those stories with your children? Today is Super
Sunday and we will be sharing breakfast as a family
and then we will be talking about Eucharist and the
Mass. Is the Mass just an obligaon for you or is it a
me of giving thanks to God for your blessings and
receiving Jesus in Communion to gain strength to live
out your Chrisan life?
