FROM THE PASTOR
Praised be Jesus Christ!
With Lent just days away, it is always a good idea to review our Lenten fasting and abstinence requirements.
Fasting
What is the Lenten fast? - The Lenten fast consists of reducing our food allowance to only one full meal for the day .
Two smaller meals are also permitted, but the combined quantity of food in those two smaller meals must be less than that of a full meal.
Also, there is to be no snacking between meals, but non-“meal” beverages are acceptable at any time of the day.
Who must fast? – The Lenten fast binds all Catholics between the ages of 18 and 59. (Pregnant or nursing mothers and those who are ill are also exempted).
When? – There are only two mandatory fast days throughout the year: Ash Wednesday and Good Friday.
Abstinence
What is Lenten abstinence? – Abstinence refers to abstaining for one day from all flesh meat and food items made from meat. (Fish and seafood famously do not fall under these abstinence regulations).
Who? – Abstinence binds all Catholics who are 14 years old and up. There is no upper age limit for the requirements for abstinence.
When? – Ash Wednesday and all Fridays of Lent are days of abstinence.
These practices bind under penalty of grave sin, so they are not to be regarded lightly. Please let me know if there are any questions or any particular situations which might require a dispensation from these rules.
Keep in mind, however, that the Lenten fast and abstinence regulations are really not that difficult to keep in practice!
I think their value to us is primarily two-fold:
1. They remind us that small penitential practices should be a fairly regular part of a healthy spiritual life. It is the Church, as a good mother, teaching us how to do some simple penance. 2. They have an immense value from the standpoint of public witness. We join in penitential solidarity with our fellow
Catholics, and this has an impact on the culture around us. For example, the phenomenon of the “Friday Fish Fry” is a cultural response and accommodation to Catholic penitential abstinence.
In keeping with the recent series on Eucharistic belief and devotion, this seems like a good time to address the issue of the Eucharistic fast.
The Eucharistic fast applies to those Catholics who intend to receive Holy Communion at Mass. Those individuals must have abstained from all food or drink for at least one full hour before receiving Our Lord.
A few notes on this point:
1. The Eucharistic fast is counted from the actual time that Holy Communion is received during the Mass, not from the time that Mass starts. 2. The Eucharistic fast also binds under penalty of grave sin. Those who are not disposed to receive however can feel free to come up with their arms crossed over their chest which indicates that you would like to receive a blessing instead. 3. Water and medicine do not break the fast, but the fast does apply to the juices derived from hard candy and chewing gum. Just a gentle reminder here to make sure that any gum is thrown away before entering church, along with the silencing of any cell phones.
In the hearts of Jesus and Mary, Father Peter Van Lieshout
