PRAYER INTENTIONS We have left a file in the Lady Chapel and invite you to write there any particular intentions for prayer that you may have and we would ask that if you go to light a candle you include in your prayers all the inten-tions mentioned in the prayer file.

To prepare for this prayer, spend a few moments asking the Holy Spirit to open your mind and heart to hear this Word being spoken to you today.

Third Sunday in Ordinary Time-Year A - Matthew 4:12-23

H earing that John had been arrested Jesus went back to Galilee, and leaving Nazareth he went and settled in Capernaum, a lakeside town on the borders of Zebulum and Naphtali. In this way the

prophecy of Isaiah was to be fulfilled: Land of Zabulun! Land of Naphtali! Way of the sea on the far side of Jor-dan, Galilee of the nations! The people that lived in darkness has seen great light; on those who dwell in the land and shadow of death a light has dawned. From the moment Jesus began his preaching with message, ‘Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is close at hand.’ As he was walking by the Sea of Galilee he saw two brothers, Simon, who was called Peter, and his brother Andrew; they were making a cast in the lake with their net, for they were fish-ermen. And he said to them, ‘Follow me and I will make you fishers of men.’ And they left their nets at once and followed him. Going on from there he saw another pair of brothers, James son of Zebedee and his brother John; they were in their boat with their father Zebedee, mending their nets, and he called them. At once, leaving the boat and their father, they followed him. He went round the whole of Galilee teaching in their synagogues, pro-claiming the Good News of the kingdom and curing all kinds of diseases and sickness among the people.

1. Spend some time quietly reading and rereading the passage, noting the words/ phrases that draw your attention. 2. Imagine yourself there, watching Jesus, listening to him…Repent…Follow me… What meaning do these words have for you today? 3. Take time in quiet prayer with Jesus about the way the Good News of the Kingdom is being proclaimed today.

NATIONAL HOMELESSNESS SUNDAY: Collection 29st January Every year now for the past thirteen years our parish has marked National Homelessness Sunday by giving our practical support to the splendid work done by the De Paul Trust for homeless youngsters. We have done this by providing them with used but good quality:

bedding, towels, cutlery, crockery

for the two homes they run in Manchester for homeless young people, as well as toiletries of every kind for both males and females. We have taken the liberty of placing flyers on cars in the car park and also in the porch. If you can help in any way please bring your donations to mass next Sunday. Thank you in anticipation of your usual generosity WALKING GROUP. The next walk will be on 19th February. Details soon. THE WELLSPRING We all know socks are a Christmas cliché but they are one of the best gifts we could give to those who visit The Wellspring (for the homeless and disadvantaged). We are therefore requesting your donations of un-wanted/not needed gifts of Christmas socks or those socks you may be throwing away (which are in a good, clean con-dition) being replaced by new socks. A gift we see as a cliché would be a saving gift to others. We would also appreci-ate any donations of hats, scarves and gloves. We will be collecting up to (and including) Sunday 22nd January 2017. Please leave any donations at the back of church. A cautionary note Ladies attending Mass are advised to take their handbags with them when receiving Communion. Once again we have had the occasion of suspicious activity in church.
