FROM THE PASTOR

Praised be Jesus Christ!

The month of May is dedicated in a special way to the honor of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

Throughout the universal church this month, parishes and Dioceses will participate in a variety of traditional Marian devotions:

May crownings and processions, Mary gardens, special pilgrimages to Marian shrines, Marian consecrations, and many other local

and national customs.

The parallels between “May” and “Mary” stretch far beyond the incidental similarity in spelling—something somewhat unique to the English language.

Rather, the great Marian saints and devotees throughout the history of the church have rejoiced to see in the month of May (at least in the northern hemisphere), a sort of natural symbol or typology of Mary’s identity and role in the Church.

SPIRITUAL JOY

We know all too well in upstate New York that even though spring officially starts in March, winter still seems to maintain a firm grasp on our weather, even throughout most of the month of April. But what a joy it is when that pattern finally breaks in May!

There is a tangible shift in our emotions, a sort of deep natural joy in once again being able to breathe the fresh air, to go for walks outside, and to enjoy the warmth of the sun.

This is what devotion to Our Blessed Mother does for our spiritual life. Mary has a way of filling us with a deep, spiritual joy that is hard to put into words.

She can lift us gently out of a time of spiritual darkness. She has a way of sweetly encouraging us in our daily prayer, devotions, and sacrifices. She calls us to repentance in a way that is not fearful, but instead so tender and motherly.

SUPERNATURAL LIFE

May is a time of new growth and life everywhere we look. In no other month do we see such a radical, even daily, change outdoors as the grass darkness and begins to grow, the trees bud forth their first leaves of the season, and in every place our neighborhoods go from barren dullness to vivacious color.

Again, this is what Mary can and does do for our spiritual life. If we confess that the Incarnate Christ is the source of all grace and sanctification, and Mary is God’s chosen means by which Christ both received his human nature and entered into the world, then we should have no problem in recognizing that Mary is the Mother of our spiritual life and the “spring through which all grace flows” (as we sing in the “Hail! Holy Queen”).

She wants the life of sanctifying grace to flower in the souls of us, her spiritual children. So if you want to see daily and vibrant growth in your relationship with Christ, then make sure that Mary is Queen and Mother of your heart.

REFLECTIVE OF CHRIST

Just as in the month of May we see how the light and power of the sun causes the earth to burst forth in beautiful life and colors, so too with Christ and Mary, we have a parallel image of how Mary perfectly receives and reflects the saving power of the Cross in a most unique way such that she is and always was completely without any stain of sin, whether original or actual.

She is the Immaculate Conception, the “fairest honor of our race” (Judith 15:9), and the most perfect product of God’s redemptive love.

VIRGIN MOTHERHOOD

Poets have long reflected on spring as a season that showcases earth’s “motherhood.”

Perhaps in a loose sense, we as Catholics can think of it more deeply as a season of “Virgin-Motherhood.” Without even having to plant new seeds, the earth buds forth into new life nonetheless.

This can be for us an image of the Blessed Mother. Without any intervention of man, the Holy Spirit makes Mary fruitful with Christ, and so she becomes the miraculous and singular case of the woman who is both Queen of all Virgins and Mother of all peoples.

In the hearts of Jesus and Mary, Father Peter Van Lieshout
