Parish Lenten Challenge

St. Pius X Youth Ministry

Phil's Friends During Spring Break, on Monday, March 27, from 12:15-3:15 pm, the youth group will be volunteering at Phil's Friends which makes care packages for cancer patients. We'll meet at Pius at 12:15 pm for carpooling and be back by 3:15 pm. Since it's during Spring Break, we only reserved 25 spots, but that doesn't mean they won't fill

up fast, so please email Mark Restaino, at [email protected], to reserve your spot. Yahtzee with Seniors On Monday, April 3, from 6:30-8 pm, in the St. Pius X Social Center/ gym, the Pius VIP group and other seniors are invited to hang out with the Pius youth group and play games such as yahtzee, cards, uno, scrabble, etc. We’ll also be making plastic bag mats for the homeless with the Pius Prayer Shawl Ministry. Students can invite their grandparents as well. We hope to see you there!

Confirmation Passion Retreat The Passion Retreat is on Holy Thursday and Good Friday, from 7 pm on April 13 to 8 pm on April 14 at St. Pius X. This is an overnight retreat, but if students or parents are uncomfortable

with staying overnight, students can leave at 10 pm and come back at 9 am. For students from Pius, the fee for the retreat is covered in the Confirmation fee. For students from other parishes, the cost is $20. For the Passion Retreat, we're also looking for adult chaperones who can participate in and help with different activities during the retreat. We have two shifts for chaperones, overnight 7 pm-9 am and daytime 9 am-8 pm. Please email Mark Restaino, at [email protected], to sign up your student or yourself (as a chaperone) for the Passion Retreat or to let him know that your student will be attending a Confirmation Retreat at another parish. Nominations for Pastoral Council 2017-2018 Seeking six new members for the Pastoral Council

Is the Lord calling you? We are looking for parishioners who are willing to serve on the Pastoral Council beginning on July 1 of this year for a one, two or three year term. These individuals should be baptized, practicing Catholics; at least 18 years of age or older; and registered parishioners. The collective function of members of the Council is to represent all of us while assisting the Pastor in formulating policy and pastoral planning for the entire parish. It’s likely you know someone who can fill a role on the Council. It could be YOU. Don’t be shy. Nomination forms are available on line at www.stpiuslombard.org and in the Shepherds’ Hall. Looking for Bingo Volunteers The Carnival Committee is gathering volunteers for Bingo being held during the Carnival this year. We are looking for volunteers to commit to 2 hour slots. at St. Pius X on April 1 & 2 The St. Vincent de Paul truck will be in our parking lot the weekend of 4/1 & 4/2!! Our volunteers will be waiting for you at the truck to help you unload. Please have all your donations bagged or boxed. No hangers please. We will be happy to accept……. Clothing, shoes, linens, and books in good or

bad condition. Unusable clothing, shoes, linens and even books generate income for the needy because they are sold for rags or in bulk. SPECIAL NEED FOR SCHOOL CLOTHING & COATS FOR CHILDREN!

Small housewares (toasters, blenders, mixers, etc.)

Electronics-- The SVdP Thrift Shops are now electronic recycling centers! We can take small electronics and computers at the clothing drive. For larger item donations, please call for a home pick up. SORRY No TV’s of any kind are accepted.

Your donations go to the St. Vincent de Paul Thrift Shops where your donations are given away free to needy families in the community. Donated items are also sold at reasonable prices at the thrift shops so that needy families can shop with dignity and funds are used to assist those in need. If you have any large items, bicycles or furniture you would like to donate, you can call and schedule a pick up at your home at 630-231-4658.

REFLEXION 1. Rey para nuestro Bien 1.1 Las lecturas de hoy nos presentan a Jesucristo como el ungido, el nuevo David, el rey colmado tanto de poder como de bondad. Su ministerio es arrancarnos de las tinieblas, sanar nuestra ceguera, regalarnos nueva luz. 1.2 Las lecturas tienen su aplicación práctica en las consignas que nos da el Apóstol en la segunda lectura de hoy: "Caminen como hijos de la luz. Toda bondad, justicia y verdad son frutos de la luz. Busquen lo que agrada al Señor, sin tomar parte en las obras estériles de las tinieblas." Esto, que es la estrategia central de nuestra Cuaresma en este ciclo litúrgico, bien merece convertirse en propósito para la vida entera, porque si lo pensamos bien, la Cuaresma es a la Pascua como esta vida es a la eternidad junto a Dios. 2. El Señor mira los Corazones 2.1 David fue elegido gracias a la mirada de Samuel que supo ir más allá de las apariencias. Podemos bien decir que Samuel tenía una "luz" de la que carecía el común de la gente y que con esa luz pudo ver las cosas un poco a la manera de Dios. Por eso rechazo lo que parecía evidente y se inclinó por el candidato que nadie hubiera pensado, el menor de los hijos, David, que ni siquiera era contado como hijo, porque recibía tratamiento de siervo y cuidador de rebaños. 2.2 Es interesante que la Biblia haga un elogio de la belleza de David. No es cosa frecuente en la Escritura ensalzar el aspecto físico de nadie y no se ve al principio qué relación pueda tener esta gallardía con las tareas más bien guerreras y de gobierno que pronto tendrá que asumir este pastorcillo.

2.3 Pero hay algo ahí: la hermosura, señal de armonía y de salud, habla también de un corazón que transparenta algo interior, tanto más notable porque no lo esperaríamos en uno que ha llevado vida de peón y que además ha sido relegado por su propia familia. Mas David no está lleno de recelo o resentimiento: su corazón está en otras cosas; al parecer, él sabe remontarse por encima de lo exterior y también tiene algo de la luz del profeta que mira más allá de las apariencias. Esas dos miradas se encuentran y Samuel pronuncia el veredicto de parte de Dios: "¡éste es!" 3. "Yo soy la Luz del Mundo" 3.1 El evangelio de hoy puede leerse en versión abreviada o completa; proviene del capítulo 9 del evangelio según san Juan. Sinceramente creo que vale la pena mirar el texto largo que contiene la frase fundamental de Cristo, "Yo soy la Luz del Mundo," la cual no está en la versión breve. 3.2 El proceso que vive este ciego "de nacimiento" es toda una parábola en sí mismo; es un camino que nos permite revisar nuestra propia historia porque "de nacimiento" no nos viene la luz que necesitamos para tener vida eterna. La analogía es mucho más estrecha si tomamos el elemento de la piscina en que el hombre se lava y que viene a ser como una imagen entonces del bautismo que nos ha concedido tener la luz de la fe. 3.3 Es interesante revisar la actitud de los fariseos. Ellos ven con claridad que ha habido un milagro pero no dan el paso a reconocer que ese milagro signifique algo. Esto es importante porque nos ayuda a diferenciar el milagro y su significado: bien se ve que lo segundo es lo fundamental. 3.4 Ahora bien, ellos no quieren reconocer que Cristo revele nada porque están a gusto con lo que ven y conocen. Sienten que "ven" y por eso, como lo denuncia el mismo Cristo, permanecen en su ceguera. De donde comprendemos que la Cuaresma implica ver muchas cosas pero sobre todo ver que no lo vemos todo y que necesitamos de la Luz de Cristo para ver en realidad. Por Fr. Nelson Medina, OP

Youth Theater Group Performs Finian’s Rainbow Jr. — April 7 - 9

Saint Genesius Productions youth theater group will perform Finian’s Rainbow Jr. at Montini High School, April 7 - 9. More than 50 talented students from local Catholic grade schools, including St. Pius X, Sacred Heart, and Kingswood Academy will come together to prepare this exciting performance. Adapted from the classic Broadway musical, Finian’s Rainbow Jr. brings audiences the luck of the Irish, with a classic score by Burton Lane and Yip Harburg (Academy Award-winning lyricist of the classic song, “Over the Rainbow,” from the film, The Wizard of Oz). Finian McLonergan and his daughter, Sharon, emigrate from Ireland to the town of Rainbow Valley in the mythical state of Missitucky. Missitucky is filled with a unique cast of characters, including Woody Mahoney, Woody’s mute sister Susan, and a corrupt Senator. Finian is intent on burying a stolen pot of gold, which he believes will make the gold grow and multiply. Hot on their heels is Og, a leprechaun, intent on recovering his treasure before its loss turns him permanently human. Show times are:

Catholic Charities Seeks Members for Board of Young Professionals

The Catholic Charities, Diocese of Joliet Board of Young Professionals is seeking new members. Membership is open to young professionals, ages 21-40, who are committed to helping the poor and vulnerable in their communities; meeting new colleagues throughout the diocese; and networking with other young leaders. A variety of social events and service projects are held frequently so members can choose activities that fit into their busy lives. Members gather for bi-annual meetings which include socialization, networking, and dinner in addition to the meeting. The next service opportunities for members of the Board of Young Professionals are:

· Hosting a potluck dinner at Hope House homeless shelter in Villa Park on March 29.

· Preparing and serving lunch at Daybreak Center homeless shelter in Joliet on April 8.
