Dear Parents Thank you and congratulations to the P&F Association for conducting a tremendous Quiz Night last Saturday. In addition to the fund raising function they consistently produce a fun raising effect. Quiz Master Thomas, the shy person he is, has discovered a new vocation in this role – great job Haydn. For the laughs, the challenges, the connections made, we thank you. Gladly we have had a very positive experience with primary parents and the online booking scheme for Parent / Teacher Discussions. Secondary parents are now asked to use the same scheme to book in for discussions in Week 1 of Term 2. Access details will be provided with the Progress Reports being circulated this week. Please be aware of the closure date (3pm, Apr 29). Also on our school website is the full school calendar for your information and planning. As often as we can the calendar will also contain attachments for events so you can check excursion departure and arrival times etc from the comfort of home. This week’s calendar is rather full (as usual): Whole School: Thursday (April 10th) we are conducting the annual Athletics Carnival at River Park. As we draw to the end of first term it is not quite time for Easter. This coming Sunday marks the beginning of the most important week in our Church’s calendar ‘Holy Week’. Holy week embraces the last days of LENT (until Thursday) and the Easter Triduum. The Sacred Triduum is also called the Great Three Days. Holy Thursday- Mass of the Lord’s Supper - The Washing of the Feet. Good Friday- The Passion of the Lord Easter Sunday- The Resurrection of the Lord Dates for the Calendar

students celebrate this Mass with parishioners. After Mass they provide and serve morning tea. This is a valuable link with our parish, the attendance of the students is greatly appreciated by the parishioners and the students themselves benefit from this pastoral care experience. Visiting Show Forensic Science – A Case of Discovery The Year 3-6 primary students will be able to see a Forensic Science Show this Friday, 11

Secondary Parent / Teacher Discussions Secondary discussions will be held on Wed (April 30) and Thu (May 1). Secondary mid-semester reports will be sent home today week. Athletics Carnival for Kindergarten, Year One and Year Two Sport for this week will be on Thursday. All students to wear their sports uniform on Thursday only. They can wear a t-shirt in the colour of their house instead of the white shirt if they have one. Kindergarten, Year One and Year Two will be attending the Athletics Carnival on Thursday. They will have an early recess at school and be down at the park about eleven o’clock. Great fun will be had taking part in various novelty events before ‘The Great Race’ - a sprint on the track at twelve o’clock. They would love to see you there, cheering them on. Lunch will be eaten down at the park but please remember for Kinder, Years One and Two - there will be no lunch orders that day and no canteen at

school for recess. Chess Our jumpers screamed football, but our hearts screamed chess! -Darcy Kellett quotes We left Cowra wearing our St Raphael’s football jumpers, pumped up for a win against Blayney High in this 5000 year old sport. We also brought Henry's Limited Edition Mario Chess set to let them know how serious we were. When we arrived we were welcomed by a student in a blazer and tie. We compared this to our footy jumpers and realised we were not in Cowra anymore. Our official judge was a Y12 student who informed us of his numerous victories in chess. Luckily he couldn't be an official and play. The organiser and students had a feast prepared for us and after some brain food and introductions; we shook hands and were off. It was intense. Every wrong move left you wondering whether to throw the board out of frustration. I found


the humour in it and was constantly trying to refrain myself from laughing too heavily. Jonty, my opponent, probably thought I had too much sugar before the game, but it put him off and I won. Henry and Darcy our no. 3 and 4 on the team narrowly went down and it was up to Ben our no. 2 to win. Ah well, I thought to myself, we did well, they were a tough side and we can still lose one more time before we are officially knocked out. Then a murmur went through the crowd, Ben had won!? Nobody saw it coming (I can say this because he’s my brother). We won!! How amazing!! We left the warm hospitality to be met by the cold Blayney air in a shocked state that quickly grew into a swagger and a wiser understanding of the lure of this ancient sport. We were stoked! On the way home another breakthrough was made, Darcy turned to Henry and stated "Wow, you’re weirder than me!’ Thank you to Mr. Cooley for taking us to Blayney and teaching us the mental training required for these games. Year 3 High Jump Due to unforeseen circumstances, Year 3 have not had the chance to have a go at 'High Jump' throughout our Thursday sport sessions. All other field events have been attempted and as it is their first go at the big carnival on Thursday, we will be holding a practise run for these students only on Wednesday at lunch. As the Year 3 students will be in their school uniform on this day, girls especially are asked to bring with them to school, a change of shorts, shirt and joggers. Winter Sports Trials Last Friday, under cloudy skies and weather forecasts that suggested that staying indoors may be a good option, 21 St. Raphael's students headed across to Bathurst to compete in the Diocesan Winter Sports Trials. We had representatives in the sports of Hockey, Netball, Soccer, Rugby Union and Rugby League. The rain held off probably longer than most thought it would, however the heavens did open up causing some interference to the possibles/probables matches. Our school once again performed well, with many of the students making their way into the final selection match at their respective sports. Three Rugby Union boys find themselves making it to the next level. Joe Sullivan, Will Cain and Will Austin will all represent Bathurst Diocese in Forbes towards the end of Term 2.

Four Rugby League boys have made their way into representative teams. Hayden Mullins and Ky Johnson for the Opens, along with Bill Statham and Alex Brown for the 11s, will be heading to Tamworth early in Term 2. Madeline Webster has progressed through in Girls’ Soccer will also be heading to Tamworth early in Term 2. Congratulations to all 21 students for making it to the trials. Good luck to our 8 students who have moved through to the next, challenging level. Thank you also to the parents and grandparents who took time out of their busy schedules to transport students to Bathurst last Friday. It was greatly appreciated. Rugby League Gala Day Tomorrow, April 8, sees all Primary boys playing "The Greatest Game Of All" down at River Park, with the first game kicking off at 9:30. The David Peachey Shield ( Years 5 + 6 ) and the Russell Richardson Cup ( Years 3 + 4 ) is an annual Rugby League Gala Day held in Cowra, with winners progressing onto Dubbo next term to play in a Finals Day. So if you would like to see some great talent on show, head down to the grounds tomorrow and show your support. Who knows, there may be some future Eels on display! Junior basketball at PCYC will be moving to a new level in term two with the introduction of the PCYC Primary School Challenge. As well as the skills session offered on both Monday and Wednesday, players, both boys and girls, will be placed in their “school” teams and play for the right to be known as the Cowra PCYC Primary Schools Champion. This competition will run each week through term two with finals on 16

th and 18

th June. Schools

may have more than one team but each team will have a different team name and team members will remain with that one team. Students from Cowra Public School, St Raphaels Catholic School, Mulyan Public School, Holmwood Public School and some home schooled students took part in the first of our very succesful ‘Learn to Play’ basketball camps last year and we hope to see all these students lining up for the PCYC Primary School Challenge. Each week teams will play against other school teams in an organised format of skills coaching first and then organised games. Monday and Wednesday will be separate competitions but players can attend and play in teams on both days if they wish. Suggested team names could be CPS Comets, StR Eels (this should keep Mr Statham happy), Mulyan Magic and Holmwood Heat. A PCYC Public School Champion team will be crowned at the end of each competition with trophies and prizes to be awarded. The cost for Junior Basketball will be $30 per player per term for those attending once a week, or you can book for both Monday and Wednesday for $50 for the school term. Vacation Care PCYC vacation care will be running at PCYC’s Binni Creek Road complex during the school holidays, programs and booking forms are now available from PCYC’s Young Road building.

Technology Concerns:

During the latter part of this term we have noticed a concerning degree of mis-use of technology by some students. Many parents

are ‘migrants’ to the digital world, having not grown up immersed in technology, and struggle to stay on top of their children who are

born into or ‘native’ to the digital world. The information below may help address that shortfall.

Some students have been downloading ‘jail break’ software. This is a legally grey area. It seems that whilst downloading the

software is not illegal in itself, its use does violate Australian laws. The software is used to bypass passwords / PIN to activate

stolen devices and to gain a higher level of access to devices that a person may own. For example, circumventing restrictions on

an Apple device to enable the device to download non-Apple applications or Apple Apps for free. This breaches Australian

Copyright and Circumventing laws.

Some students have been using an App ‘Ask.fm’. This is a question and answer service that enables users to ask controversial

questions anonymously. Questions may be posed either as text or video. Users can then browse the site and chat directly with

other users. A quick look at the site indicates the level of sexualised and bullying content that goes unchecked.

Whilst these issues are concerning, on a far more serious level, a student recently had their identity stolen online, with the fake id

being used to bully and intimidate a number of students. This matter has been referred to Police and is the subject of an on-going

investigation. As such, I cannot comment on the specifics of the case, but I can inform you of the process involved to orchestrate

this crime, in an attempt to protect other students from suffering the same fate.

Frustratingly, anyone can create an email account in another person’s name. The fake email account is all the ‘proof’ needed to

then create social networking accounts in forums such as ‘Instagram’ and ‘Kik’. These forums can be accessed from any interne t

compatible device. Students are using Instagram to post images and encourage others to “Kik me” in order to chat privately. Each

Kik user has their own username, which makes it difficult for parents to monitor. Conversations in Kik are essentially anonymous.

The Kik App was designed for older users, but cyber-safety experts suggest the majority of users are aged between 11-15. Many

students do not understand the dangers of chatting with strangers online. A friend of mine in NSW Police works at the State Crime

Command and has told me Instagram and Kik are (due to their anonymity) a playground for paedophiles.

The biggest difficulty for parents in addressing all of the above concerns is the fact that all these sites are based off-shore in

Canada and Eastern bloc countries such as Latvia. As such, they are not subject to Australian law. Education, parent-child

conversations and parental vigilance are your best defence. I would strongly encourage every parent to sit down and talk with your

child / children about their use of technology and set boundaries as to their use and degree of access. Some tips for parents

include the following:

1. The NSW Police website has excellent information for parents.

2. Computers should be used in a public part of the house, not in a bedroom.

3. Parents should question if the screen suddenly minimises when they enter the room or if text abbreviations such as ‘POS’

appear on the screen (‘Parent Over Shoulder’). - See the Police link for a detailed translation of short hand text types.

4. Home WiFi should be switched off at bedtime.

5. Phones and other devices should not be taken into the bedroom.

6. Parents can install ‘Nanny’ software to monitor the use of devices.

7. Parents can restrict settings on devices to restrict its level of use.

8. If your child is chatting online with friends, ensure they actually speak face to face or over a phone first to confirm that the user

id they are communicating with online is in fact their actual friend.

9. With regards to social networking sites such as Facebook, only friend actual known friends, not ‘friends of friends’. If you can’t

prove who the user is, then how do you really know who they are???

10. Set social networking sites to private to reduce the chances of abusers locating you.

11. Be mindful of the information you share online. Avoid sharing personal information. (Identity theft and associated fraud is the

fastest growing crime worldwide).

12. Understand that once something is ‘on the net’, it is there FOREVER, even AFTER you delete it! (This can have serious long

term consequences when future employers find inappropriate information at recruitment time).

13. Regularly ‘ego surf’. Ego-surfing means typing your name into Goggle and seeing what comes up. You may be surprised to

see what others may have posted concerning you. For example, your child may not post photos of themselves online, but a

friend might.

14. Parents can always request sites to remove content and offensive content can of course be reported both to the site

administrator and to Police.

15. Remember, it is the parents who pay for the devices, pay the electricity and internet bills and set the rules of the house, not the

children.

I am liaising with NSW Police for a specialist officer to speak with secondary students about cyber safety during next term.

2014 Athletics Carnival

Thursday, 10th April Our annual Athletics Carnival is to be held on Thursday, 10th April, 2014 at River Park. The carnival will involve all students from Years 3

– 10 in events from 8 years to 16 years of age. All parents are most welcome to attend the carnival and cheer the athletes on. Our carnival is for everyone. Infants students will be attending the carnival – participating in novelty events and a 100m race. The carnival commences at 8.50am SHARP with the Secondary 400m events.

Student Movements

Secondary students, who are dropped by car or walk to River Park , are asked to be at the present by 8.45a.m. for Roll Call. Any student who comes to school by bus will wait on the secondary playground then walked to River Park, supervised by teachers.

Note: Secondary students competing in the early events (400m running) must be at River Park by 8.45am Note: All secondary students will walk back to school at the completion of the carnival.

Primary students are to arrive at, and leave from school, in their usual manner. They will walk to and from the River Park with their teachers.

Note: The only students permitted to leave from River Park are those with their parents. Parents, not students, must speak to the student’s Homeroom Teacher prior to leaving.

Clothing / Water / Sun Protection / Expectations

Students are permitted to wear mufti in their House colour – Blue (Kilbreda), Red (Raphael) or Yellow (Xavier). The mufti must be appropriate for athletics while at the same time respectable.

NOTE: School hats must be worn, no other caps. All students have been allocated a House and, if they are not sure of their House, they are to see Mr Thomas as soon as possible. Please note that crepe paper is not allowed and coloured hair spray is not to be brought on the day. Sunscreen should be brought. No student is allowed to leave their group without informing their supervising teacher. When needing to go to the toilets students

should inform the supervising teacher and go in pairs. Phones and music players are not allowed during the carnival.

Food / Lunch

Pool Canteen is available from 10am, throughout the day. All students should have their own water bottle and light refreshments.

Parent Helpers

As with all of our carnivals, we rely on the generous assistance of our parents, so, if you can spare time to assist please contact Mr Thomas.

Championship points are allocated as follows: 1st

– 12, 2nd

– 10, 3rd

– 8, 4th

- 6, 5th

- 4, 6th

– 2.

Students will be receiving ‘place certificates’ on the day of the carnival

Age Champions will be announced back at the school in Secondary Playground 1, after the students return from the carnival.

Age champions and the winning house will be recorded in the Week 1, Term 2 Newsletter. Age Champions will receive medallions at the K-10 Semester One Assembly (planned for June 20)

The team to attend the K-10 Schools Carnival in Cowra will be selected from place getters at our carnival. As this is a representative opportunity, those selected would be expected to attend.

Dear Parents, Secondary Parent / Teacher Discussions have been planned for Wednesday, April 30 and Thursday, May 1, 2014 (the first week of Term 2). These evenings have been set aside to allow parents and teachers to discuss a student’s progress. Important Details * All bookings are done on the school website: www.straphaelscowra.catholic.edu.au * On the reverse side of the mid-semester reports the steps to be followed to complete bookings is visually shown. * Reports are being sent home with students this week. * The steps start by clicking on: Parent / Teacher Discussions. * Next: Enter the booking code: 9X8LB (then follow the steps indicated) Important Information * There is to be one ten-minute booking for each teacher for any one student, regardless of how many subjects that teacher instructs the student. * It is necessary to stick to the ten-minute session as once the order is disrupted there is a significant flow-on effect for the overall discussion timetable. * You must have an email address to complete this process (booking confirmations are emailed immediately). * If you are unable to complete the bookings, phone the school office on 63422940 Secondary Parent / Teacher Discussion Timetable. * Date Wednesday, April 30 and Thursday, May 1 *Times: 3.40pm – 5.30pm (Wednesday) AND 3.40pm – 7.00pm (Thursday) * Duration: Time allowed for each discussion is 10 minutes. * Venues: Secondary Classrooms Bookings Parent / Teacher discussion bookings are available from today, Monday 7th April. Bookings close on Tuesday, 29th April at 3pm. NOTE: - Keep the booking code: 9X8LB in a safe place to ensure you can complete your booking when ready. - It is best to complete your booking ASAP as it is a case of ‘first in, best dressed’. - The school is not available to assist with bookings during the vacation period. - Full-time secondary teachers are available both Wednesday and Thursday. - Teachers with a part-time secondary teaching load are available Thursday only. - Teachers unavailable on these nights can be contacted individually to arrange alternate meeting times.
