Dear Parish Family,

Today’s Solemnity of the Body and Blood of Christ is a multifaceted celebration. The Feast of Corpus

Christi is an acknowledgment of the Real Presence of Jesus in the Most Holy Eucharist of the Altar.

The Church teaches us that the Lord Jesus is really, truly, and substantially present in the Eucharist. He is present in his glorified Body,

Blood, Soul, and Divinity, yet under the form of bread and wine. In the Eucharist, the passion and death of the Lord Jesus are recalled.

Today, the gospel emphasizes that Holy Communion is finally a promise and genuine foretaste of Heaven. St. Thomas Aquinas

composed the hymns and prayers of Corpus Christi. The Church prays with St. Thomas as she says, “Christ, our God and brother,

hear our humble plea; by this holy banquet keep us joined to thee. Make us one in loving thee, one in mind and heart, till in heaven we

are thine, never more to part.”

It is my prayer that the parishioners of St. Rita in the Desert will maintain and demonstrate the greatest respect and reverence for the

Real Presence in the Most Blessed Sacrament. In our secular and material age, we have lost all perspective on what is truly sacred and

holy. Let us profess our faith in the Eucharist by true devotion and love.

CAUTION

Be Aware: Cooper’s Hawks on Campus

The Aleppo Pine tree next to the Shrine has become the

home for Cooper’s Hawk and her chicks. Mamma bird is

very protective, aggressively defends the area around her

nest, and may swoop and dive in a hostile manner at

those who pass by.

Please be cautious walking around the Shrine.

The chicks are growing fast and will be moving on soon Stuff the Backpacks

Come help St. Rita’s Outreach Ministry stuff the

backpacks on Tuesday, June 25 at 1:00pm in the hall. Backpacks will be distributed July 13 at the Vail Family

University, being held at Empire High School. The

underwear is given to the Vail School Nurses so they have a

supply on hand when students are in need of a clean pair.

THANK YOU to all who have donated

school supplies and underwear!

A Note of Appreciation Thank you to the St. Rita’s Guild for giving the fathers of the

parish a gift on Father’s Day.

Can’t Make the “Stuff the Backpacks?” Join our St. Rita’s Outreach Ministry as we help Christ Lutheran

Outreach “Pack-A-Thon” on Sunday, June 30 from 8:45am -

10:30am at Cienega High School. They will be packing 30,000

ready-to-eat meals for the Vail Food Bank. RSVP to Regina

Tiedemann at [email protected] to staff a table. The

whole family can be involved and serve the hungry right here. You could go to Saturday 5:00pm Mass, Sunday 7:00am Mass, or

make it back for Sunday 11:00am Mass!

Do you know anyone who wants to become

Are you an adult Catholic, but have not received

Confirmation? You can register now to joining the RCIA (Rite of Catholic

For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to

serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.

Being His Body and Blood

On this the feast of the Body and Blood, we are reminded

that the Eucharist is the center of our lives, not just our Sunday

celebration. Remember, the gospel says, that whoever eats the

flesh and drinks the blood of the Lord Jesus has eternal life. The

thanksgiving that we celebrate in the eternal gift of the Eucharist

should spill over into EVERY MOMENT OF OUR DAILY

LIVES.

WE ARE SENT FORTH TO BE THE BODY AND BLOOD

OF CHRIST IN OUR HOMES, OUR WORK PLACES, OUR

COUNTRY, AND OUR WORLD. Let us pray today and

everyday that we help to fulfill Christ’s mission in the world,

carrying his sacrifice and sacrament to those who are lost.

T he Peter’s Pence Collection has ancient

roots that reach all the way back to New Testament

times. The early Christians provided material support

that the disciples—those preaching the Gospel—could distribute

to those in need (see Acts 4:34-35, 11:29). Today, the Peter’s

USCCB Call to Prayer This Week’s Prayer:

For all refugees in our midst, may they find strength

in our concern for justice.

Practice your Faith While on Vacation

Stop at a spiritual location. When planning your trip, try to find a holy site either at your

destination or along the way that you can visit. You might

consider looking for prominent parishes, churches, cathedrals or

historic locations relating to Catholicism, saints, or well-known

clergy. This is a great way to incorporate an educational and

spiritual component into your trip.

Parish Men’s Group needs YOU More members are needed for the men’s group.

Help us by joining us each Saturday morning

from 7:00am to 8:30am in the St. John XXIII

Center. Since we first began our Parish Men’s

Bible Study group we have grown by 3 new

members. We need more men. For a parish of

1300 families and starting with only 12 men we are in good

company. We are taking the call to become fishers of men

seriously. But in order to do that we need more men who want

to increase their faith through study, share their faith man-to-

man, and pray and support one another and their families. Please

help us out, join us or at least come and see. It doesn’t hurt to

test the water. Jesus had the Apostles put out into the deep to

catch a whole load of fish we are only asking you to put your big

toe in and try it. After all you might just find that the water is fine

and jump in.

Gifts of the Holy Spirit

Session 5: The Church speaks often of the gifts of the Holy Spirit,

but Fr. Dave asks us to remember that the Holy Spirit Himself is a

gift. We just need the docility to be moved by Him. How and in what

direction? Come and see.

The Spirit and the Eucharist

Session 6: According to the Catechism, the Eucharist is saturated

by the Holy Spirit. In Episode 6, Fr. Dave explains how the power the

Holy Spirit is made manifest throughout the Mass, from our

intentions to attend to our reentry back into the world.

“If we don’t rekindle our faith fires, they will go out. I find this [Faith Formation] class feeds my Spirit and keeps that fire alive.”

--Joanne, participant

Pray the Rosary You are invited to become a Rosary Warrior! Please join us

on the first Saturday of each month to recite the Rosary aloud.

We meet at 4:30pm in the St. John XXIII Center. Our next

gathering is on Saturday, July 6, 2019.

Our Lady has asked that all of us say the Rosary for world peace

and for our own personal intentions. This 20 minutes spent in group

prayer with and for each other is a wonderful preparation for our Mass

celebration.

If you are not familiar with the Rosary prayers we welcome

you to join us. We have rosaries and pamphlets that will help

you and we will be happy to introduce you to this powerful

prayer which Our Lady has asked us to pray.

Saint Irenaeus

The Church is fortunate that Irenaeus was involved in

many of its controversies in the second century. He was a

student, well trained no doubt, with great patience in

investigating, tremendously protective of apostolic

teaching, but prompted more by a desire to win over his

opponents than to prove them in error.

As bishop of Lyons he was especially concerned with

the Gnostics, who took their name from the Greek word

for “knowledge.” Claiming access to secret knowledge

imparted by Jesus to only a few disciples, their teaching

was attracting and confusing many Christians. After

thoroughly investigating the various Gnostic sects and

their “secret,” Irenaeus showed to what logical

conclusions their tenets led. These he contrasted with the

teaching of the apostles and the text of Holy Scripture,

giving us, in five books, a system of theology of great

importance to subsequent times. Moreover, his work,

widely used and translated into Latin and Armenian,

gradually ended the influence of the Gnostics.

The circumstances and details about his death, like

those of his birth and early life in Asia Minor, are not at all

clear. Franciscan Media
