Dear Parishioners and Visitors,

SAINT RITA OF CASCIA CHURCH 3 REV. MSGR. RICHARD KREKELBERG

PASTOR’S CORNER

In today’s Gospel proclamation we are told that only one of the ten lepers returned to Jesus to offer praise and thanks to God for his cure, which caused Jesus to ask:

“Where are the other nine?”

Every time I hear this account, my reaction is embarrassment. But why? This happened over 2000 years ago, and yet I feel somehow ashamed and embarrassed as if it had just happened. I wonder if it is because of the way I was raised; you know, the voice of your parent, “Did you remember to say thank you?”—especially to Jesus!

I think we would all like to believe that we would be the one who returned with thanks and praise; but don’t you just have a twinge of concern or fear that you might have rather easily been one of those nine others who became caught up in themselves and their incredible good fortune that any thought of thanksgiving just seemed to evaporate?

Lately I have come to associate thanksgiving with forgiveness. At first it does not seem to be such an immediate connection. However, if you think about it, both acts—thanking or forgiving—reward the one who thanks and the one who forgives. Both acts are even known to improve one’s health. St. Paul instructs his readers, “Dedicate yourself to thankfulness.” Why? Because thankfulness to God—for the day, for a friend, for an answer to prayer, is part of being in a real relationship with God and part of living the reign of God now, on Earth. Thankfulness is part of an “at peace” disposition, part of human happiness.

Forgiveness likewise rewards the one who forgives. With a sigh of relief, one who has forgiven is able to then move on—get on with life instead of being a prisoner to hate and resentment, or (God forbid!) prisoner to years of ill health generated by all the energy spent

and abiding negativity required to hold a grudge. Imagine, “No, I don’t have forgiveness in my heart. I have grudginess”—you’ll also probably have an ulcer or shingles before it’s over. And then one has to ask, if possessed in spitefulness, how far has my heart wandered f r o m b e i n g d e d i c a t e d t o thankfulness?

So what did happen to those other nine lepers? We’ll never know. We do know, however, the joy and happiness of the one who returned to thank the Lord. We know that his relationship to Jesus deepened and produced even greater rewards. Not a bad thought seeing as how the supermarkets are already putting out t h e s t u f f i n g m i x f o r THANKSGIVING. With deepest gratitude for all of you,

—Msgr. Richard

EQUESTRIAN ORDER OF THE HOLY SEPULCHRE OF JERULSALEM

It was my joy, honor, and privilege, this past weekend to attend the annual meeting of the EOHS in Tucson, Arizona. It was and added blessing for me, as well, to be present for the solemn investiture of Sir Paul T. Urrea and his wife, Lady Nora A. Urrea, as new members of the Order. Nora, Paul, and their children, of course, many of you know as our parishioners. Congratulations to them!

I was knighted last year, and I am looking forward, together with other Knights and Ladies, to share with you the wonderful mission of this Order and to promote that mission here at St. Rita over the months and years ahead. For now let me just say that the principle mission of the Order is the support of Christians in the Holy Land and, in general, the promotion of peace in the Middle East. Stay tuned!

Q&A Capital Campaign

Q: How will my contribution to the Capital Campaign be

used to provide for the youth of Saint Rita today and for the future?

A: Phase One (Parts A & B) of the Master Plan specifically addresses this question. In addition to the upgrades to the Church and renovations to Msgr. Gara Hall to be completed in the summer of 2017, a new Pastoral and Youth Meeting Center is planned for Saint Rita.

Currently, our parish serves over 300 schoolchildren, and additionally, a combined 250 religious education elementary, middle and high school youth, plus two young adult ministries from Sierra Madre and neighboring cities. These ministries, specifically dedicated to the faith formation of our young are steadily growing and require adequate meeting space and scheduling time. This new Pastoral and Youth center will offer approximately 4,500 sq. ft. of state of the art, technologically advanced and ADA compliant multifunction space to hold parish ministry and community events, as well as religious education instruction, retreats, regional religious education conferences for our youth and more. The first floor plan includes restrooms and a prep-kitchen, while the second floor is specifically designated for youth activities. The building will open to a meadow for outdoor functions year-round. Imagine the possibilities for our young to learn and carry on our Catholic faith now and for future generations!
