The Church of Saint Roch, Oxford, MA THE SEVENTH SUNDAY OF EASTER June 2, 2019

My Dear Parishioners, Many conversations this week have started something like this: “Wow, you certainly have had your share of excitement around here lately!” I’d reply, “It’s the kind of excitement I could do without.” As a matter of fact it was not excitement at all, but a reason for sadness and sober reflection. Of course you know that I am talking about the shooting of a young teenage boy by another teenage boy in front of the rectory last Saturday during the 4 o’clock Mass. At first I was told that they were two boys from Worcester, since many found it hard to believe that this could happen on Main Street in Oxford by Oxford residents. The fact that it did and they were makes it more sober and sad. It serves as a clear reminder that the battle between good and evil does not happen in far off places and that no one is exempt from the deception of the devil. Like I told the reporter from Channel 5, “I really do not know any details about this particular incident, except that it happened and that sadly the lives of two young men have been significantly changed and not for the better.” It is something symptomatic of our time. The world, the flesh and the devil propose that power, violence and lack of respect for the dignity and worth of the other are legitimate ways of achieving our goals. Which is the exact opposite of God’s plan for our lives. Pope Benedict said, “At the heart of all temptation is the act of pushing God aside because we perceive him as secondary, if not actually superfluous and annoying, in comparison with all the apparently far more urgent matters that fill our lives. Constructing a world by our own lights, without reference to God, building on our own foundation. What’s real is what is right there in front of us— power and pleasure.” I am praying for the two boys, their families and friends; for all the people involved in this sad situation. I hope that you are praying for them too. Our God is a good businessman and can take loss and turn it into gain. We are called to confront evil through prayer in order to be able, with God’s help, to overcome it at work in our daily life and around us, when there is violence, rejection of the other, and injustice. We need to have the courage to reject all that takes us off course, the false values of our time that deceive us. I would like to direct these words of Pope Francis to those who have lost their way and have been seduced by the culture of violence and domination. “God is not aloof from us. Each one of us has a place in God’s heart. God knows us by name, cares for us and seeks us out whenever we turn away. God’s love is always greater than anything we can imagine. While sin is the way we distance ourselves from God, yet that does not mean that God distances himself from us.” Let us not waste this sad incident that has sobered us, but let it help us to be more determined than ever to bring the wisdom of our Lord who is the Light of the World into the darkness that is near us.

Let us continue to love one another, Fr. Roy

Baby Bottle Drive

Baby Bottle Drive

SIX MONTH DEVELOPING BABY Your spiritually adopted baby is developing quite beautifully now. His weight is approaching 2

pounds. Babies born prematurely at this time have a very good chance of surviving. The medical advances in caring for extremely small newborn infants are extraordinary in-deed. Justice O’Connor has remarked that the Roe v. Wade decision is on a collision course with itself. Each passing year, we witness medical advances that allow our medical professionals to save younger and younger premature in-fants. Your prayers have helped your baby’s mother continue with her pregnancy and seek the help she needs.

The bottles will be collected on Father’s Day weekend.

In every ministry: at the Masses; church dinners; breakfasts; community events; outreach to those in need; teaching children and adults; mentoring; youth ministry; making food for St. Vincent de Paul Society’s

American Chop Suey each month; upkeep of the facili-ties and more… Call 508-987-2382 or 508-987-8987 to volunteer an hour or two a month.
