WEEKLY MIRACLE This week marks the beginning of a kind of “liturgical detour.” We have been listening to Saint Mark’s Gospel during this liturgical year (Year B). Today we begin to hear a long section from John’s Gospel, starting with the miracle of the multiplication of the loaves and fishes. This miracle story is a prelude to the Lord’s statements that we will begin hearing in a few weeks, in which Jesus refers to himself as the “bread of life.” Each week we witness a miracle at Mass. We do not see a multiplication of loaves before us. What our eyes of faith allow us to see is the miracle of the transformation of common elements - bread and wine - into the Lord’s Body and Blood. Once we have received the Lord, the multiplication begins, for in the Eucharist we are strengthened to multiply our efforts to feed the poor, shelter the homeless, and bring comfort to the despairing. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Sooner of later, as they plan their wedding liturgy, a couple will receive some advice about a “unity candle.” They need one, they are told (at great expense); it is a tradition; it is what Catholics have always done. Not so. In the last thirty years or so, the custom has enjoyed wide popularity in the United States. It has never been officially part of our liturgy, and it exists in tension with some of our core symbols. Usually there are two smaller candles and one larger one to be lit from the smaller. Large candles in our tradition always mean Christ, and smaller ones are always tokens of our baptismal candle. If the candles are meant for a kind of renewal of baptismal vows, then the meaning is clearer, yet this is seldom the understanding. Why, then, are those smaller candles extinguished? It’s hard to tell where these pesky candles came from. Some suggest that the Presbyterian Church, which has a very lean wedding liturgy, introduced them as an option for extending a short service. Generally, it’s been experienced as a “photo opportunity” rather than a genuine liturgical ritual. The “unity candle,” a recent invention rather than an authentic tradition, has not been approved as an adaptation to our rite, and it is to be hoped that it will gradually disappear from view.

PYTANIA O WIARĘ...

Dlaczego kult Maryi jest silniejszy od np. kultu Ducha Świętego. Czy nie nastąpiło tu pewne odwrócenie ról? Dlaczego oddajemy cześc świętym? Przecież to Jezus miał być jedynym Pośrednikiem?

W chrześcijaństwie nie jest tak, jak zostało to ujęte w liście. Kult i cześć najwyższa należy się jedynie Bogu w Trójcy Świętej Jedynemu. Ten Jedyny Bóg i Pan, pozwala jednak łaskawie człowiekowi uczestniczyć w swojej Świętości. Posługuje się także ludźmi w dokonywaniu dzieła zbawienia. Całe Pismo Św. o tym świadczy. Nawet Jezus wybrał sobie Apostołów i zlecił im, by w Jego imieniu nauczali, uświęcali i kierowali Lud Boży ku Niemu. Bóg wybrał też szczególnie Maryję na Matkę Jezusa Chrystusa – Boga i Człowieka. Nie ma zatem nic szokującego, że takim ludziom szczególnie przez Boga wybranym i dopuszczonym do życia w Nim oddajemy cześć. Podziwiamy ich za heroiczne oddanie się Bogu samemu i staramy się ich w tym naśladować. A jako będących bliżej Boga, prosimy ich by pomogli nam swoimi modlitwami. Chociaż tak naprawdę Boga wtedy uwielbiamy za Jego Miłość ku ludziom. Ci szczególnie wybrani i uświęceni, szczególnie zaś wśród nich Najświętsza Maryja, są więc pośrednikami, bo uczestniczą w Jedynym Pośrednictwie Jezusa Chrystusa. A wszystkie łaski i możliwości im dostępne mają swoje jedyne źródło w Zbawieniu dokonanym i dokonującym się ciągle przez Boga w Jezusie Chrystusie w mocy Ducha Świętego. ks. T. Schabowicz

Pewien człowiek przyszedł z Baal-Szalisza, przynosząc mężowi Bożemu chleba z pierwocin, dwadzieścia chlebów jęczmiennych i świeżego zboża w worku. On zaś rozkazał: Podaj ludziom i niech jedzą! Lecz sługa jego odrzekł: Jakże to rozdzielę między stu ludzi? A on odpowiedział: Podaj ludziom i niech jedzą, bo tak mówi Pan: Nasycą się i pozostawią resztki. Położył więc to przed nimi, a ci jedli i pozostawili resztki - według słowa Pańskiego. 2 Krl 4,42-44

Niech Cię wielbią, Panie, wszystkie Twoje dzieła i niech Cię błogosławią Twoi święci. Niech mówią o chwale Twojego królestwa i niech głoszą Twoją potęgę.

Oczy wszystkich zwracają się ku Tobie, a Ty karmisz ich we właściwym czasie. Ty otwierasz swą rękę i karmisz do syta wszystko, co żyje.

Jezus więc wziął chleby i odmówiwszy dziękczynienie, rozdał siedzącym; podobnie uczynił z rybami, rozdając tyle, ile kto chciał. A gdy się nasycili, rzekł do uczniów: Zbierzcie pozostałe ułomki, aby nic nie zginęło. Zebrali więc, i ułomkami z pięciu chlebów jęczmiennych, które zostały po spożywających, napełnili dwanaście koszów. A kiedy ci ludzie spostrzegli, jaki cud uczynił Jezus, mówili: Ten prawdziwie jest prorokiem, który miał przyjść na świat. REFLEKSJA NAD CZYTANIAMI NIEDZIELNYMI... Powołanie i rozmnożenie chleba – oto kluczowe treści tej niedzieli. Jesteśmy powołani, żeby być świadkami cudu Eucharystii, którego zapowiedzią było rozmnożenie chleba przez Jezusa. Ta myśl wprowadza nas w tajemnicę dzisiejszego dnia i kieruje nasze spojrzenie w stronę stołu eucharystycznego. Tu Bóg-Miłość składa ofiarę z samego siebie, by stać się dla nas Chlebem. Być świadkiem tego cudu, to być świadkiem miłości, która się daje i pomnaża.

ALIMENTANDO AL MUNDO Al oír las narraciones de cómo Eliseo y Jesús multiplican los alimentos, y el salmo responsorial sobre como la mano del Señor nos alimenta, es fácil caer en la tentación de pasar por alto el maravilloso himno de la carta a los efesios en la Segunda lectura. El himno se centra en los números más potentes de la tradición bíblica: el uno, el tres y el siete. La médula del himno es el número uno, repetido siete veces. Tres de ellas se refieren a la Iglesia: un solo cuerpo, un solo Espíritu, como también una sola es la esperanza. Los próximas tres son los fundamentos de la Iglesia: un solo Señor, una sola fe, un solo bautismo. Y todos estos se juntan en un solo Dios y Padre de todos. La idea de repetir los milagros obrados por Eliseo y por Jesús al alimentar las multitudes nos desalienta, claro está, pero la carta a los efesios nos ofrece un modo más realizable de vivir como Iglesia y de alimentar a los demás en la Iglesia: ser siempre humildes y amables; ser comprensivos y soportarnos mutuamente con amor, y esforzarnos en mantenernos unidos en el Espíritu con el vínculo de la paz. ¿Quién de nosotros no puede “alimentar” a la comunidad de la Iglesia viviendo de esta manera? Es verdad que siempre estamos llamados a “alimentar” al mundo en el sentido literal de la palabra, pero nuestra misión como Iglesia también nos dice que a los demás también hay que alimentarlos por la manera en que vivimos y actuamos cada momento de cada día.
