Corner Pastor’s

In Joy and Hope, Fr. Jerry

I. All Saints Day, Guidelines for True Joy: remembering all the saints known and unknown to us who enjoy the glory of heaven, we celebrate All Saints Day. In today's Gospel, we hear the Beatitudes, which are guidelines for true joy and the attainment of sanctity in our Christian lives. We hear how to live lives of holiness so that we may attain happiness in this life, but even more happiness in the next life as we strive to likewise be numbered among all the saints in heaven. Our HOLY DAY Mass schedule: Monday, October 31 (All Saints Eve)—6:00pm; Tuesday, November 1—7:00am and 12:05 noon at the Cathedral and Blessed Sacrament Chapel (7th & Sycamore)—6:00pm.

II. All Souls Day (November 2): Praying for the dead reaches deep into our human history, and it has been our custom from the earliest days of the Church. While many people visit a cemetery on All Souls Day, I invite you, also, to celebrate Eucharist at 7:00am or 12:05pm.

III. Remembering Our Loved Ones: There will be a special Ves-pers Service on Wednesday, All Souls Day, at 6:00pm, followed by a reception in the community center. While everyone is invited, we especially invite those who have lost loved ones this past year. So that we might plan more effectively, please RSVP to the parish office if you plan to attend Vespers and the reception. Everyone is invited! May they rest in peace.

IV. Special Opportunity for Praying on Election Day: what better time to pray for our country and our democratic process for electing a president for the next four years, than on Election Day, Tuesday, November 8th. Saint Stephen Ca-thedral will offer the opportunity for personal and public prayer with Adoration of the Blessed Sac-rament beginning after the 12:05pm (noon) Mass and ending at 6:00pm, poll closing in Daviess County. To assure that at least two (2) people are present for Adoration, there are "Sign Up" sheets at our church doors. We need to continually pray for our elected officials to make decisions that reflect Christ’s teachings and not the “teachings” of modern society. Take time to be formed by www.faithfulcitizenship.org.

Pray the Rosary every day, pray the Rosary daily!

“Blessed are you when people revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account. Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven, . . .”

“Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted. Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth. Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for right-eousness, for they will be filled. Blessed are the merciful, for they will receive mercy. Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God. Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God.” “Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.”

Outreach Opportunities • Works of Mercy • The Holy Year of Mercy is coming to a close on November 20, 2016, the Feast of Christ the King. Our mercy and com-passion should continue on! Below are opportunities for you to continue to practice Corporal Works of Mercy—

Jubilee Year of Mercy Last Sunday’s Gospel gave us a tax collec-tor’s beautiful prayer to take with us from this Jubilee Year of Mercy. Today, another tax collector’s encoun-ter with Jesus offers a comforting memory to cherish, but also a challenging mission to embrace. Zacchaeus’ short stature (see Luke 19:3) matched how contemptible, socially and spi-ritually, Zacchaeus’ religious acquaintances considered tax collectors to be. Jesus counters that judgment with mercy. Radical sin meets unmerited grace. God seeks and finds the lost; a sinner’s home becomes salvation’s house. The sinner “quickly” welcomes salvation “with joy” (19:6), while the righteous grumble judgmentally at God’s mercy. Mercy chal-lenges us, too. Like Zacchaeus, we have been sought and found by Jesus, called by name to welcome Jesus into our heart’s home. Therefore, we must go forth from this Jubilee Year of Mercy as “missionaries of mercy,” seeking our fellow sinners with Jesus, receiving them with joy (see 19:6) as che-rished brothers and sisters, and joyfully offering our judgment-free hospitality as Jesus’ own “Welcome home!”

There will be a reception in the Community Center when Vespers conclude. Please RSVP to the parish office so we may plan for the service and the reception; 270/683-6524 or [email protected]. DISCIPLESHIP REFLECTIONS

A Message from Father Jerry Riney…

If, as Christian stewards, we believe that everything we have comes from God—possessions, time, talents, financial treasure, friendships, even the air we breathe—then we must strive to return a generous por-tion of those gifts to God out of gratitude. At this time of year our parish focuses on a Time, Talent, and Treasure annual renewal. In approximately one week, parishioners will receive a renewal packet in the mail. Why an Annual Renewal? Renewals provide an opportunity to examine our blessings and make prayerful decisions about our annual financial support to our parish and sharing our talents in parish ministry.

Praying. Decisions about our financial giving and service in ministry should be made prayerfully. Daily prayer is a valuable tool for making important deci-sions, prioritizing life’s demands, and becoming aware of God’s presence every day. Giving. The planned, proportionate, and sacrificial gift of our treasure is an expression of gratitude, our need to give back freely to God from our first fruits. If we examine and pray about the gifts the Lord gives us, we will make the right decision for our annual financial support to our parish. Serving. As good stewards of the time that God has allotted us, we can express gratitude by sharing our tal-ents and skills wisely. Our parish is blessed to offer many liturgical and non-liturgical ministries (there are opportunities available for almost everyone!). Your Time, Talent, and Treasure renewal packet will include a directory of parish ministries and a finan-cial/ministry pledge form. Please pray about your annu-al financial support and complete the Treasure portion of the pledge. Then, review the ministry descriptions in the directory, consider prayerfully your talents and available time, and complete the Time and Talent por-tion of the pledge. For your convenience, ministry se-lections for all of your participating family members can be indicated on one form. Kindly return the pledge by Thanksgiving Day (November 24) by mail or in the offertory at Mass. May God bless you abundantly for your support of St. Stephen Cathedral Parish through PRAYER, finan-cial GIVING, and SERVICE in ministry! You are appreciated!

Praying. Giving. Serving.
