Issues and Action

Americans share many blessings and strengths, including a tradition of religious freedom and political participation. However, as a people, we face serious challenges that are clearly political and also profoundly moral in nature. We are a nation founded on "life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness," but the right to life itself is not fully pro-tected, especially for unborn children, the most vulnerable members of the American family. We are called to be peacemakers in a nation at war. We are a country pledged to pursue "liberty and justice for all," but we are too often divided across lines of race, ethnicity, and economic ine-quality. We are a nation of immigrants, struggling to address the

challenges of many new immigrants in our midst. We are a society built on the strength of our families, called to defend marriage and offer moral and economic supports for family life. We are a powerful na-tion in a violent world, confronting terror and trying to build a safer, more just, more peaceful world. We are an affluent society where too many live in poverty and lack health care and other necessities of life. We are part of a global community facing urgent threats to the environ-ment that must sustain us. These challenges are at the heart of public life and at the center of the pursuit of the common good. As Catholics, we are part of a community with a rich her-itage that helps us consider the challenges in public life and contribute to greater justice and peace for all people. As Catholics, we are part of a community with a rich heritage that helps us consider the chal-lenges in public life and contribute to greater justice and peace for all people. Part of that rich heritage on faithful citizenship is the teaching of Vatican Council II's Declaration on Religious Liberty (Dignitatis Humanae). It says that " society itself may enjoy the benefits of justice and peace, which result from [people's] faithfulness to God and his holy will" (no. 6). The work for justice requires that the mind and the heart of Catholics be educated and formed to know and practice the whole faith. In this section of our Web site, you will find information and resources that highlight the role of the Church in the formation of conscience, and the corresponding moral responsibility of each Catholic to hear, receive, and act upon the Church's teaching in the lifelong task of form-ing his or her own conscience. With this foundation, Catholics are better able to evaluate policy positions, party platforms, and candidates' promises and actions in light of the Gospel and the moral and social teaching of the Church in order to help build a better world. ---excerpted from "Forming Consciences for Faithful Citizenship: A Call to Political Responsibility from the Catholic Bishops of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops."

As Catholics, we are part of a community with a rich heritage that helps us consider the challenges in public life and contribute to great-er justice and peace for all people.

1st to 8th Grade

I f you are thinking to let your children learn more about our Catholic faith, or to receive First Holy

Communion and Confirmation, please consider send-ing them to our Faith Formation Program. Our Faith Formation Program runs from September to May. We meet once a week on Monday, 4 to 5:15 pm (except holidays). This program is supported by a group of experienced and dedicated religious education teachers. They do not only teach the knowledge of the Bible, the sacra-ments, and the church; but most importantly, they teach the students how to become a faithful followers of Jesus Christ. Their goal is to teach the students to become Christ-like. For more information, please call the parish office 415-681-2444, x27

RCIA - 2015 - 16

Is there someone in your life who is wondering what Catholic faith is, or is thinking about becoming a Catholic? Perhaps that someone just needs a little push from you to embark on this faith searching journey. The RCIA Program - the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults - welcomes anyone who is interested in learning more about the Catholic faith or would like to receive the sacraments of Baptism, First Holy Communion and Confirmation. The program will begin in late September. Participants will receive the sacraments of initiation during the Easter Vigil in March, 2013. Please call our parish office at 415-681-2444 for more information.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Sooner of later, as they plan their wedding liturgy, a cou-ple will receive some advice about a “unity candle.” They need one, they are told (at great expense); it is a tradition; it is what Catholics have always done. Not so. In the last thirty years or so, the custom has enjoyed wide popularity in the United States. It has never been official-ly part of our liturgy, and it exists in tension with some of our core symbols. Usually there are two smaller can-dles and one larger one to be lit from the smaller. Large candles in our tradition always mean Christ, and smaller ones are always tokens of our baptismal candle. If the candles are meant for a kind of renewal of baptismal vows, then the meaning is clearer, yet this is seldom the understanding. Why, then, are those smaller candles ex-tinguished? It’s hard to tell where these pesky candles came from. Some suggest that the Presbyterian Church, which has a very lean wedding liturgy, introduced them as an option for extending a short service. Generally, it’s been experi-enced as a “photo opportunity” rather than a genuine li-turgical ritual. The “unity candle,” a recent invention rather than an authentic tradition, has not been approved as an adaptation to our rite, and it is to be hoped that it will gradually disappear from view.

Hello Saint Stephen’s Families and Friends

Would your family enjoy hosting a Catholic exchange student from Italy?

AFS Intercultural Programs is currently seeking host families in the San Francisco Bay Area for high school exchange students arriving in August for the 2015-16 school year. Below is a little information on one of these students, who is Catholic, and active in her church back home. How wonderful it would be to find them a Catholic church connection while they are here in California! Click on the "Host a Student" section, then at the bottom (gray section) under "Host a Student," look at "Get Started" and "Host Family FAQ's". However, to answer the most commonly asked questions -- the students are here for a total of 10 months (late Aug - end of June), they bring their own spending money for personal purchases etc., and AFS provides health insurance coverage for medical needs (doctor visits etc.) while they are here. Students can share a room with a sibling of the same sex, but need to have their own bed.

Any interested families may inquire online at www.afsusa.org or contact Kr istin Southard at [email protected] or 646-381-3309.

Catholic Divorce Ministry

Here at St. Stephen’s Church, and in the Archdio-cese of San Francisco, we have a special ministry for those men and women who have experienced the pain of separation and divorce. We believe that the Church has a rich treasury of people, Holy Scrip-ture, tradition, and pastoral ministry on which it can draw to serve its members whose marriages end in divorce. We strive to lay open this wealth and make known Christ’s abundant healing love so that all who suffer from separation and divorce might expe-rience healing, reconciliation, and new life. We also recognize that separated and divorced people, through their vulnerability, suffering, courage, faith-fulness, and patient endurance bear witness to Christ and his redeeming grace in the world. They are not mere recipients of the Church’s compassion; they are as well, ministers of that compassion. We have a support group that meets twice a month here at St. Stephen’s. Notre Dame Mission Appeal July 25 & 26

This weekend, July 25-26, Sister Kay McMullen and Associate Libby Hagman will be speaking at our Masses about the missionary work of Notre Dame Sisters in Africa and Latin America. Sister Kay’s mission experience was in South Africa and Zimba-bwe, mostly in work with novices and in communi-cations. Libby Hagman, a Notre Dame Associate, has been instrumental in keeping contact and send-ing food, supplies and books to our schools in South Africa, Zimbabwe and Kenya. She is a visiting nurse. She has considerable experience working with church and social ministries here on the Peninsula.

The second collection for the Missionary Coopera-tive Plan will help support the ministries of Notre Dame Sisters with some of the poorest people in those countries and others throughout Africa, Cen-tral and South America, and will also help prepare new Sisters for their ministries. The sisters of Notre Dame will be grateful for your prayers and support.

For more information, check our California unit website www.snddenca.org and www.sndden.org (congregational website). Thank you.

FEEDING THE WORLD

With today’s two accounts of feeding miracles and the psalm response about the Lord’s hand feeding us, it is easy to gloss over the marvelous hymn in Ephe-sians. It is built around the most potent biblical num-bers: one, three, and seven. The core of it is the word “one” expressed seven times. Three of these describe the church: one body, one Spirit, one hope; the next three are the foundations of the church: one Lord [Jesus], one faith, one baptism. All of these are bound up together in the one Father of all. While we might feel daunted by the prospect of duplicating the won-ders worked by Elisha and Jesus in the feeding of multitudes, Ephesians gives us a more realistic way to live and “feed” others as the church: by living in hu-mility and gentleness, by acting with patience, bearing with each other in love, and always seeking and striv-ing to preserve unity through peace. Who among us cannot increase the way we “feed” the church and the world by living this way? We are al-ways called upon to “feed” the world in the literal sense; but our mission as church tells us that others are also fed by the way we live and act each moment of each day. Copyright © J. S.
